Pediatrician Wants Oil in My Son's Diet

My son has been, apart from teething, needing a diaper, hungry, or tired, a happy little boy. I still can't believe how happy he is and has been. He is very active, and is ready to walk, soon! He's been climbing, and his only sitter voted him the fastest crawler she's ever seen. He is lean, but he is not skinny - he has chunky thighs, and a little belly, not a pot belly. The pediatrician is suggesting, since he is underweight (his stats 'flattened out') he have oil included in his diet to fatten him up. This just sounds so WRONG to me! ...

Traveling to Puerto Rico with a 23 Mo. Old & an Infant; Is This Feasible?

Hi Moms. My brother is finally getting married at the end of this year (right after Christmas) in Puerto Rico (where his fiance is from)! All of us are excited for him & would love to be there for his wedding. However, I am due with baby #2 Nov. 29th & am a little nervous about traveling that soon after the latest addition to our family arrives. BUT, I would like to try it if it's possible... My husband would be going too & we would be traveling with my Mom & Dad & my sister & brother-in-law (who have no children of their own yet), so...

Baby #2 Due in 3 Weeks- How to Talk to 3 Year Old About Being in the Hospital

Hello. I am due to have my second baby in about 3 weeks and have been trying to figure out a the best way to tell my 3 year old daughter that I will be in the hospital for a day or two giving birth. I am looking for suggestions on a way in which she will understand the "reality" of coming home with a new baby. She is very excited to meet our new baby but I imagine it is going to be different once the new baby arrives. She is very much our "focus" and we give all of our time and love to her now- which of course will be shared very soon....

Advice on "Talking Up" a Trip to the Dentist

My 3 year old daughter had her first trip to the dentist last week. From the start of us talking about the appointment she has had very negative feelings about going and has told us that she doesn't want to go. We do not know why. We have never to our knowledge bad talked the dentist. So, our first visit to the dentist did not go well at all. She would not lay down on the dentists chair, or even look at him. We watched a little boy go first, just counting the teeth etc. Still very resistant. Finally we had to hold her down so he...

Non-animated TV shows/DVDs for a 2 Year Old Boy

I'm in search of some TV shows or DVDs for my two year old son that are NOT animated. He really doesn't like cartoons at all. He is very into Baby Einstein and Curious Buddies but I'm going to lose my mind if I have to watch these videos that much longer and would like to have a few more options in my DVD cabinet. I have been trying Sesame Street with him for some time but it only holds his attention for about 5 minutes on a good day. I've also shown him the Wiggles a few times but he doesn't seem interested in that either. Puppets of...

Diaper Changing Struggle with 11 Month Old!

Hi, I wonder if anyone has ideas or suggestions to help me keep my 11 month old daughter still while I change her diaper! She is always trying to get away when I am trying to change her diaper. Not so bad if it is not poopy, but can be a big problem if is is! She has also started to reach down to grab herself while I am trying to clean her. I do try to have interesting toys or objects handy to give her, but most of the time it doesn't distract her long enough. I do not use a changing table, but I have an area on a twin bed that is in...

First Time on an Airplane

My husband, daughter and I are planning our first airplane trip in May. My daughter will be 2 1/2 then and I need advice! We would like to bring the car seat on the plane with us, it is a Britax Marathon, but I have been told by another mom that this particular seat pushes the child too much forward in the seat making their feet touch the seat in front of them. Has anyone experienced this? Do you recommend flying with the car seat or a seat harness at this age? Also, what do you do about drinks for your child. Since you can't get...

Looking for Childcare Opinions

Hello Moms! I am looking for opinions on a childcare question. My 14 month old is taken care of full time by a sitter who lives within walking distance of my job. She is a grandmother, watches only my daughter, is CPR certified, has years of experience, treats my daughter like family. We adore her. Daughter Keeps Saying That She's Scared...

My 2 yr. old daughter keeps telling us that she is scared of things. Sometimes, it seems like she is just startled by something, like when one of our cats runs around, but other times it is something bizarre. Last night, as we were reading a new book, there was a tiny picture of a walrus, and she kept saying that she was scared of the walrus. Huh? She has seen pictures of walruses before, and it never freaked her out. She is also scared of puppets, and things on her hands. Since birth, she has never liked her hands covered, so that one...

Mom-in-law Is Trying to Ruin My Marriage

HELP! How do I deal with a controlling, manipulative mother-in-law? Seriously, I think she wants nothing more than me to disappear! My husband has been the only parent to his 2 children, their mother hasn't been in their lives at all. So, his mom (grandma) basically was their mom. Kids Play Places

My cousin and I are toying with the idea of opening a center where mom's bring their kids just to play. In the area where we live, there is nothing like this, other than the McDonalds play area. There isn't even a play area in our mall. Our plan would be for it to be a place where mom and child would stay - no drop-offs, not a daycare. We would have a cozy sitting area for mom's with coffee and snacks, and wifi, maybe a tv. The kids area would have a variety of different activities - an art center, a train table, an area to play "house...

2 Yr Old Afraid of Shadows...

Lately, my DD, who will be 2 next month, has been talking about shadows and how she is afraid of them. My husband and I used to make shadow puppets when she first discovered shadows (about a year ago) and she never seemed bothered by them. Now, she talks about being afraid of the "big shadow." I have tried to show her how shadows are made, even point out what is making shadows (our bodies, the plant, her bed, the dog, etc) and she seems fine, but when it's bed time, she acts afraid. I try to reassure her that there is nothing to be afraid...

Travel with a 13 Month Old...

I have a trip planned to surprise my dad for his 60th birthday. I am taking my 13 month old with me (my husband thinks I am crazy.) It's a 2 hour flight and timed a little bit qround nap time which might help. I plan on a DVD player, food, pacifier, toys, bulkhead seats. Anything else I am missing or not thinking of? He is very energetic and into walking (and a little yelling) so I am somewhat nervous he won't want to sit still or might be loud (hence the pacifier.) Any advice?

Ok I've asked a similar post, but it was during rainy weather. I am yet again watching my niece for who knows how long while we wait for an opening in her daycare day camp program opens. Problems Trimming 2 Year Old's Nails

Today my toddler showed me her "terrible" 2 phase when I tried to trim her toe nails and finger nails. She normally resists a little and then will let me do it if I count her fingers as I trim the nails. This time it was a different story. She had a full out tantrum, screaming and kicking and grabbing my arm. I tried a time out to calm her down, but then when I said it was time to trim the nails she would start the "no no no" and crying. I don't know if I should stick to the time out until she is calm even if takes a long time or if I...

Bath Time Troubles

My daughter is almost 15 months old and hates taking a bath. I have changed her bathing routine several times to try to make her enjoy it more. This started many months ago before she was a year old (about 10 months old). She didn't like her baby sling thing... so I took her out of it and put her in the tub... but then she would try to crawl around or stand up in the tub and end up almost falling... so I got a baby bath tub seat that connects to the side of the tub so she wouldn't fall. Then she threw a tantrum in the seat (after a few...

Bedtime Shenanagans & Noise

BACKGROUND: My daughter is 26 months old and sleeps in her crib. She is very happy in her crib and I do not intend on moving her to a bed until she shows signs of wanting to climb out or get a big girl bed. Her room is directly next to my son's room, who is 11 months old. Unfortunately, the walls are thin and sound carries easily. We have white noise playing at a moderate (not soft!) level to try to mask house noises (so the baby's crying doesn't wake her and vice-versa.) Moving rooms is not an option. Some people say that is not a big deal since she wont remember it but I will and I really think is a big milestone for us as a parents too. I don't know what to do. Suggestions?
