This weekend we were supposed to go with some friends to Vegas and their grandfather had just passed away. So we were going to cancel our trip but I just figured that why don't we take our baby girl to Vegas. She has been asking to go with us too. My friend got charged for one night stay ($135) for his cancellation, so we didn't just want to give money. We are staying at Excalibur. Any ideas on what we can do there for a 5 year old?
I want to take her to the light show in old Las Vegas.

We went up the mini-Eiffel tower. I can't remember what casino that was in. Also there is a shopping mall with some cool moving statues. These were both with in walking distance of the Bellagio. There was a free tram from the Bellagio to other hotels and shopping malls.
My daughter found the Hoover Dam very interesting, but she was 17 when we went.
I know some people think LV is no place for kids, but my 6-year old son loves it there! He has been many times, and is always asking to go back. First of all, the handing out of pamphlets isn't as bad as it used to be, as LV has really cracked down on making sure they don't leave the stuff all over the sidewalks anymore.
Someone suggested the Pirate show....at TI. Don't do that, 'cause it's not geared toward kids any more. The people are pretty scantily clad now. Circus Circus is always fun. The Mirage...although I'm not sure they have the white tigers there anymore. But the entrance is so cool for kids to see. Going in and out of all the casinos is a blast for kids because of all the lights and sounds. The Fremont Experience in downtown LV is a must for kids.
My son and I go hang out, walking up and down the Strip, checking out the Nascar, M&M's, New York New York, the mall (especially the outside of it where they have the led displays). You can go to Harrah's, and stand outside the outside bar, and watch the bartenders do their tricks "Cocktail" style.
And then if you want to spend time on your own, there are hotels that offer services, although you'll need to stay in the hotel, or I use a sitter sometimes, who is highly reliable and very, very good.
Oh, and go up to the top of the Stratosphere and look out! Both day and night! Most of all, just have fun.
As for the Hoover Dam thing, young kids aren't really into that in my opinion. I am very active with my son. We go to so many museums and amusement parks, farms, beaches, etc, but I'd never think of taking him to Hoover Dam. It's a long drive to go see some water rushing off some concrete. It's not worth the drive for kids, unless you're going that way anyway.
the Bellagio water/light/music show is really cool, and the "pirate" show is fun (it's out in front of a hotel, can't remember which one, it's been YEARS since I've been to Vegas ;)) If she likes rollercoasters you could check some of those out (new york new york...), and my friends recently went and spent a day at a pool/water park where you get to "swim with sharks," you're seperated by glass. Check it out online, I'm sure there are a million family friendly ideas you can find in Vegas!
There are lots of fun and "free' things as well. The white Tiger display at the Mirage is amazing and they even have a dolphin pool but that costs. Also the M&M factory is neat and if you go during the day and go to the very upper level they have a free M&M movie in this theater and it is really fun. Just looking around the fun casino's is nice such as New York, New York etc. Have fun. My son and I take a Mommy son trip there every year!!
Take her to see Hoover Dam and let her walk across the state line - different time zones - kids think it's really neat. Also, there's Bonnie Springs which is just outside of Vegas. It's a old time western town with a saloon and the works. they do shoot-outs and melodramas - she'll have a blast! Not to mention, of course, Circus Circus and I understand that a lot of the hotels now have kid-friendly activities. Shouldn't be hard to occupy your time. have a great trip! Sorry about your friends' loss.

Excalibur is awesome. I completely agree with the light show, Circus Circus, Bellagio, the Flamingo wildlife habitat (cool to have their breakfast buffet)- there's cool stuff all over that is either designed for kids or is just a great spectacle for anyone. That being said, the last time I went to Vegas I was struck by how many kids I saw in a sort of fragile state. Vegas is intense! You might want to schedule in 'down' time as well as the time that is entertainment. Just walking down the street is over the top entertaining (yet also sort of hard work) there :) Have fun!
