Questions About Progesterone Cream

I just returned from a visit to my doctor where I had my annual exam and check-up...
She prescribed a progesterone cream to be applied nightly when I described the feelings of anxiousness and worry I get when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep.

I am thirty-eight and going through what I fondly call, "ripening". But it seems there are some draw backs, namely worse PMS. I am very healthy, eat well, excercise four times a week. My weight is ideal, the doctor said. But I struggle with mild depression and take St. John's Wort, Vitamin D, etc. I am in a very loving, supportive marriage.
So it would seem that I have tried all of the alternative treatments, but it's not working.
I am doing some additional research online, but does anyone know anything about progesterone cream? What are the drawbacks/ side effects if you have used it?

Sounds like you are experiencing classic peri-menopausal symptoms. Often times, the first hormone that wanes as we age is progesterone. This leaves our bodies with an "excess" of unbalanced estrogen which can cause any number of symptoms: insomnia, anxiety and depression being among them. By taking a progesterone supplement, whether cream or orally, you are simply restoring your hormonal balance. I started taking bio-identical hormones about 9 months ago and it's as though I have a new lease on life. I SLEEP, I have hardly any anxiety, can handle life's challenges with more equanimity, and just feel better physically. There is a lot of information out there about side effects of hormone replacement therapy but after thoroughly reviewing that information and discussing it with my naturopath, I decided it was worth the risk and I've never regretted it. Taking a progesterone cream at night is one of the least toxic and invasive things you can do to improve your health - way better than sleeping pills and anti-depressants which is what some docs would prescribe. You have a lot on your plate.. I hope the progest. makes you feel better.

Kerry,
I am 39, SAHM with 2 small girls 4 & 2. I have experienced some of the same problems with BAD PMS. I am currently using a natural progeesterone cream and can honestly say it has made a difference. At first it was small but with the cream and the Vit. D, I feel better. I would give it a try, you may not notice any changes for about 2 weeks but you will! I would suggest a natural cream, I happen to use Phyto Prolief by Arbonne. You can't get it over the counter, if your interested I can tell you where to get it. Good luck and hang in there.

I don't know anyting about the cream but I've read several timesin the past few years that lack of sufficinet progesterone can play a part in PMS, loss of libido and other symptoms I can't remember.

My aunt used an estrogen cream to increase moisture in the vaginal area.

I take progesterone cream and YES there is a difference between them. I take a natural progesterone cream (the best on the market that I can fine) which is Dr. Lee's. He wrote a book about progesterone cream and what the differences were. I love using his whereas using others just didn't do the job.

Now, about using progesterone cream. Did you get a spit test? You can take a spit test to check your hormone levels because if your hormones are messed up you may need them but if not then maybe you don't need this. Also, people 39 years do go through perimenopause (no, you are not too young) so did you ever think of checking on that aspect.

Besides Dr. Lee's progesterone cream (google Dr. Lee progesterone) I use Shaklee's soy protein, menopause balance complex and menopause balance lotion. the lotion is for hot flashes so you don't need that if you don't have hot flashes but the soy and the menopause complex (if you are started through menopause) will really help with depression, mood swings, etc.

go to www.shaklee.net/a_leading_edge to check out the product.

I wish you luck and make sure you get your spit test. Not sure what the name is but doctors should know about it because it checks hormone levels.
