Try Evening Primrose Oil. You can get it in a Vitamin Store. It helped me for years and some of my friends in the early stages of menopause.

Dear T.:
I'm guessing that you've probably tried these things that I have found helpful, but here we go.
Firstly, staying cool at night, dramatically reduces the severity of the hot flashes. You should wear as little as possible to bed. A tank top and panties and don't use any covers, only the sheet. I find that at times I get cold with just the sheet, if only for a few minutes, so I keep a light throw at the bottom of the bed and just pull it up until I get warm, but not until the sweats start. Also, try not to cover your feet. If I leave them out, I stay cooler. Leave the heater off at night, and if that's not possible because of other family member, close your vent and leave the window open. I have also lost weight, only about five pounds, but that seemed to diminish the hot flashes. You didn't mention it, but I'm guessing that you're not going back to sleep immediately after wake up. I had that problem for a long time. I found that about four sips of red wine and a book makes me just sleepy enough that I go back to sleep in a reasonale time.
Also, soy. It really does make a difference. I have substitued all of my dairy intake to soy products. There are some out there that are really good! Edamame, soy bean pods, make a great snack during the day, are very low calorie, so they help with the diet and weight loss. You can heat them up, or eat them cold.
Four years is a very long time, and I'm sure that I would be a little cookoo by now. When all else fails, there are some very low dose hormones that have no significant side effects. I don't take anything, but my sister does, she is 59, and experiences no hot flashes.
Good Luck,
M.

Hi T.,
I am 52 and I have been taking the Isagenix nutritional program for 2 1/2 years now and I feel great! Besides loosing 40 lbs, 75 inches, and down 3 dress sizes I have so much energy, sleep better, and I have not suffered from sympoms such as yours. It is a nutritional cleanse which cleanses out impurities, so your body functions better than ever before. One of the products is called ionix supreme. It has adaptogens in it, and has been very beneficial to women and men. One of the things it does is help with anxiety and supports improved moods. I have heard many stories of women who have not experienced hot fashes since on this product. If you would like more information, let me know. L. Lapp ###-###-####

Hi T.,

When I was reading about your situation. I had flashbacks of my mom going through the same situation. I introduced her to a product called Phyto Prolief by Arbonne (Pure, Safe & Beneficial). It's a natural balancing cream that you use on your soft tissues. This natural balancing cream is enriched with botanicals, designed to help restore balance. It's conveniently packaged in a metered pump to take the guesswork out of measuring. PhytoProlief is light and greaseless, free of colors and fragrance.

My mom said it has cut her hotflashes down by half. Results vary with each individual of course. Should you have any interest I would be more than happy to point you in the right direction. We offer a 45 day money back guarantee should you feel this product does not help.

Good Luck in your search. ;o)

Dear T.,

I'm 53 and for the better part of a year endured the same night sweats and hot flashes. A few months ago, following the online advice of the herbalist Susun Weed (yes, that's her real last name), I started taking the herbal tincture Motherwort several times a day, and to my delight the night sweats have stopped almost completely and the hot flashes are fewer and farther between. I've also noticed a distinct leveling out in my mood. The improvements have been gradual and subtle, which are the only kind I trust. Susun Weed has a website--susunweed.com--and I highly recommend her book "New Menopausal Years: The wise woman way." You really can feel better without drugs. Take care. M.

I too have been going through the same problems. I take Estroven Maximum strength with a half glass of soy milk a day. I laughed when my doctor told me it would work, but in desperation, I thought I would try it. So, faithfully, daily, I take my estroven and soy milk. My hot flashes started diminishing, the night sweats still happen, but they are not enough to wake me up. Ask your doctor to prescribe a mild sleeping pill. Mine did, and I only take a half of one a night. I feel so much better in the morning, I get a solid 6 hours of sleep and do not have any of the side effects of a sleeping aid. This might not work for everyone, but I am a much happier person (my husband will attest to that), since I can sleep through the night and my hot flashes have drizzled. Giveit a try - what have you got to lose?

Hi T., I'm 37 years old and supposedly not premenopausal, but I suffer from hot flashes esp. early morning and at night. I gain some relief from herbal supplements like Evening Primrose Oil 1000-2000mg/day. Also Estroven otc prep is helpful and mostly natural. For specific herbs check with your local health food store, but i've heard that black cohosh, yam extract and red clover are helpful also. High soy intake has also been found useful to some women. Exactly how much you need, not sure. Good Luck, M.

Check into Ayurveda! There is a wonderful book on Ayurveda for women over forty and deals with menopause specifically. The problem is I lost my copy of the book and can't remember the author or title--ugh! I bought it on Amazon, so if you just use search words like Ayurveda for women it should come up. I believe that the title says something with the age forty in it. I also know that there is an Ayurvedic clinic in Costa Mesa that I was thinking of going to. Once again, you will have to google it. Have you tried Yoga? Check into Iyengar Yoga (books also!) since this form of Yoga deals with specific health issues. Yoga Works in Costa Mesa has Iyengar teachers. Make sure you eat as much whole, organic foods as possible and avoid processed as much as possible! I am turning forty this month, so this is an interesting topic for me! I hope to glide gracefully through menopause!! I wish you wellness and some sleep!!

Hi T., there are a couple of choices for you. There are natural plant sterols that you can get to help you. I use a combination of things because I had a complete hysterectomy due to ovarian cancer. I was thrown into menopause.
I use a product called Plus which is for hormone support. This is great for anyone (men and women)actually but helps many women who are going through menopause, post partum issues or just menstrual issues in general. It gives your body the nutrition it needs to support it's endrocrine system. Highly suggest it for all.
I also use a Vivelle patch because I need a little more support than most due to my personal situation. It is a bioidentical estrogen patch. These two things have made my life so much better.
You can find Plus through mannnapages.com/yourcellhealth

Hi T. -- I'm a 62 year old grandmother who managed to get thru the "pause" without HTR over a l0 years period.

This is what worked for me: Drink lots of water -- go easy on caffine foods/drinks and hot spicey foods. They
add to your heat.

Carry a fan in your purse, use a small fan under your desk at work, sleep nude under a fan at night with light cotton
breathable cover. Wear cotton and fabrics that breathe. Carry a small spritzer/mister to cool yourself off at outdoor events and water always onboard.

Health foods stores and many pharmacies have Black Cohosh
or Remefemin -- natural hormones from plants and other
natural aides -- Try Henrys, Sprouts, Mothers, Wild Oats,
Whole Foods.

Good Luck and God Bless, DD

Have you tried Reiki? It's a gentle hands on treatment where a Reiki practitioner gently lays hand on you to balance your body's energy system, Reiki heals by flowing through affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy, it allows your life force to flow in a healthy and natural way. While healing comes through the practitioner's hands, the client is the actual healer. We are alive because a life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body through pathways called chakras, meridian's and nadis. The life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body. Reiki is a positive gentle relaxing treatment, that enhances your body's own natural healing mechanism, it heals on all levels, physical, emotional, mentally, and spiritually, and the Reiki energy goes wherever it is needed in your life. Calcium, this is the one I recommend is cheap and well balanced helps as well to relax the body, which balances it out. My doctor sells it at her office:

try soy products... do more research online.

I don't know where you live..if there is a Whole Foods store near you..stop in and get some advice on what natural products you can take/use (foods, creams, supplements) ...certain herbs and teas help. Also if you are living in the San Diego area, try shopping at Henry's for natural remedies. Just watch your diet, hydrate yourself and buy a fan.

I know you can't take it anymore....but you just have to hang in there... I was in peri menopause for nearly 5 years thinking I would finish by the time I was 51...ha ha...I didn't officially hit real menopause until age 54. I finally made it through 12 months w/out a period in 2007...now almost age 56...the other women in my family went through the change by age 51. Remember you are not officially post menopausal(naturally) until you have gone a full 12 months w/out a period. I am sure you didn't want to hear that..but that's the way it is.

Aloha T. -

I highly recommend that you seek out the assistance of a complimentary health practitioner who specializes in women's health care. There are many naturopathic, homeopathic, and chiropractic doctors as well as master herbalists who specialize in female health.

Navigating your way through menopause can be tricky, especially when you are experiencing heightened symptoms. Trying to treat yourself can actually cause problems. And sometimes the issues causing the difficult experience need more than just a simple supplement (or drug for that matter) to remedy the problem.

I am 57 years old and have been without a period for 5 years now. Mostly I utilized special diet and exercise, sound healing work (I am a practitioner), and some progesterone creams. Recently my health practitioners (a naturopath and a nutritional consultant) recommended that I stop the progesterone cream as they felt it might be contributing to some imbalances that were discovered through my blood tests. Also there was concern that the hormone levels in the creams I was applying to my skin were possibly masking the real hormone levels in my body. We are still waiting for the effects to clear out of my system before we can begin a revised program.

Good luck to you as you move through this powerful rite of passage!

I have used it myself (my companies brand and years ago, another brand, when I first went through menopause) and it gave me relief. If you want to know more, please email me or respond to my response with an email address so I can send you information. If you would like to know more about what you are going through, please visit www.johnleemd.com.

I would also recommend that you reduce your sugar and caffeine intake as it may increase symptoms. Alcohol and chocolate will also do the same thing. Hope this helps. Wishing you wellness, and relief. It's a challenging time to find balance... :)

Hi I;m 44 years old, and 3 years into Menopause, I have had the same symptoms, you can try Lachesis Mutus and Glonoinum as well as other products by Boiron, they are for night sweats, hot flashes, and mood swings. Boiron is Homeopathic, sucrose based, not lactose, you put the 5 little pearls under your tongue, as many times a day as needed,(they taste great) it stopped my hot flashes in 2 days and night sweats in 3 days, they were all gone and I had hot and cold flashes and mood swings, all good, you must keep taking them do not stop or the symptoms will return. Boiron is safe it has a no drug interaction policy. ALSO CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR, ON not taking your Chemical hormones because, they have other benefits like working against bone loss. Best wishes, P.

If you go to a DO you can get a prescription for a natural form of estrogen called estriol. I have been battling the same premenopausal symptoms and found immediate relief with the estriol.
Also, for low progesterone there is a topical cream called Gentle Changes with activin (which is another natural form of progesterone). If you are in the South Orange County area I can refer you to an awesome doctor who is both an MD and DO.

Hi T.,
I went into early menopause at 44. I took Prempro for awhile, but I was afraid of long term side effects. I began ordering Phyto-Prolief from a company called Arbonne. They're a completely botanical and vegan company and it is a pre-metered dose of Progesterone. It's made from Wild Mexican Yam. It has helped me tremendously. It also has phytoestrogen herbs ie. Black Cohosh, Dong Quai, Evening Primrose oil, Giseng and more. It retails for $34.00 (plus S&H)and lasts for a month. I signed up to purchase it wholesale along with about 380 other products that are also 100% safe, botanically based, FREE of Artificial dyes, fragrances and Petroleum.
Call me if you have any questions or would like more info.
Take care and hang in there,

I started getting some night sweats and hot flashes but not to the same degree as you. However, my mom had always said that raw almonds helped her, so I tried it. I know this sounds crazy but the symptoms went away completely. Then, I stopped eating them as often and the symptoms started to come back. I am back eating them everyday and am feeling better. My mom said to eat about 25 of them, but I like them so much that I am sure I eat more than that. Give it a try for a month or so - it can't hurt. I know they can be expensive - if you have a Fresh and Easy store near you, they are pretty reasonable. I have heard that Costco carries them (in the baking section) but I haven't looked yet. Best wishes.

Hi T.,

Perhaps going with a holistic way of healing for menopause would benefit you at this time as you are ready to go a different route. You can consult with O.M.D for Acupressure, Natural or Chinese herbs you can find at Wild Oats or Wholefoods or any organic store, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). You can learn more about EFT on their website: http://www.emofree.com/. If you go to the Email link and then to the "Newsletter Archives" you can do a search for Menopause to read successful cases using EFT.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions on natural healing approach.

There is a very good natural product for menopause. It's called CLARY SAGE - 15 ML Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) essential oil contains natural phytoestrogens. It has a mellow, warm, herbal scent that is uplifting and relaxing, making it a perfect choice for supporting a normal, healthy attitude during PMS. It is also supportive for menopausal women.* Clary Sage has an approximate ORAC of 2,209,727 (TE/L). TE/L is expressed as micromole Trolox equivalent per liter.

Have you looked into the benefits of bio-identical hormones? I began this method of treatment a year ago, at age 50, and have found it to be incredibly helpful. I have never used birth control pills and have always allowed my body to have its natural rythm. I also am high-risk for breast cancer so this is a good - no,great! - alternative. If you would like more information let me know and I can offer some sources to help you study this as well as a couple of doctors I know to be very good. Help is on the way!

Last of all, Try OOna for PMS. It is herbal and promotes menstrual regularity. I find the hot flashes are worse during the time I would have had a cycle. Hi T.,
I went through early menopause at age 36 and I wouldn't take hrt's either. I took "Change-O-Life" by Nature's Way. It works great but you have to take it consistantly for several weeks to really notice a change, and at a couple of months it really helps. I thought that after several months I didn't need it anymore so I went off of it, and my hot flashes came back with a vengence. I didn't realize how well it was working. It won't make them disappear completely, but the difference is trememdous, at least for me. I got them at "Lacata's" in the Orange Circle, in Orange, CA. But I'm sure you can order them online, or get them at another health food store. Hope this helps. Good luck,

I stumble across your website and couldn't resist to stop and answer your question. I can totally relate to what you are going through. I'm 53 and went through a extremely difficult time during menopause. It was so bad that I even went on antidepressants, until about a year ago, when I was told that saliva testing was the only way to accurately check for hormone imbalance. After completed my saliva test, I found out the I had adrenal fatigue and very low progesterone. I have been on bio identical hormones and vitamin supplements for the Adrenal Fatigue for the last year and it has Changed My Life!!! This is what inspired me develop a website, where women can purchase saliva test kits online, which includes a confidential consultation with license Naturalpathic Doctor to review test results and make recommendations for "natural" medication. Hi T.,
I'm like you and wanted to try natural remedies for my hot flashes and menopause symptoms. I tried a variety of things but none of them worked for me. That doesn't mean they won't for you, everyone is different. I read something about low dose antidepressants relieving menopause symptoms so I finally tried it and it was like night and day for me. It worked almost immediately and got rid of all my symptoms. So even though I don't like the idea of taking an antidepressant I am glad I decided to. Good luck and if you don't have any luck with the natural remedies then give the antidepressant a try, it's worth it.

ok this is actually pretty easy to treat! first of all... take a breath! A LOT of women are going through this and I APPLAUD your desire to use only natural remedies. There is a book called "What your doctor doesn't tell you about Menopause" by Dr. Lee. GET THIS BOOK!

I am working on my masters in holistic nutrition and what I have read and what i have recommended to some of my clients is that an increase in calcium to about 2000 mg has shown some great response. Take it at night about 30 minutes before bed so it has time to absorb. Also, I have read that 800IU of Vitamin E will help you sleep and keep your tissues lubricated. Make sure that your vitamin E is D-alpha-tocopheral. Do NOT get Dl-alpha. That's fake! In addition, Evening Primrose oil, a couple of capsules a day, have shown great results too.

I can't recommend any herbs until I know your specific situation but at least you can start with this. If you want to email me back and give me more of your health details let me know.

A low dose birth control pill (Yasmine)that I take continuously (going right from one pill pack to another, no periods) and a multi-vitamin supplement from Costco called VitaAlert have worked the best for me so far.
