Toddler Scraped Butt :) :(

Hi All. My almost 2 1/2 year old son was running around without his diaper before his bath yesterday (a treat for him) and accidently fell on a wooden peg toy and got a nasty large and angry red scrape on his butt. (no blood tho)

I put some neosporin on it last nite. As the scrape is on the butt part inside the diapler (sorry for the graphics), should I also put some gauze on or anything to protect it from the diaper etc. Or is neosporin and the diaper enuf.

Thanks for your input and advice.

Jilly

Change him frequently, keep the neosporin on there, and let his heinie get as much as air possible... the air will help it heal faster since it's dry and not sitting in his mess! Just watch out for leaks ;) Poor little guy! Hope his butt feels better soon :)

You'll want to clean him and do the neosporin a few times per day. But it will heal just like diaper rashes do. Just watch it close. Sometimes the germs on toys can cause infection and with the diaper area being involved, it is going to need cleaned and treated as much as possible.

neosporine shoud be fine.. it's a miracle ointment. Just change him a little more often so it doesnt stay damp, it will heal faster.

Hi Jilly,
I would leave him without a diaper for 1 or 2 days (a treat for my daughter too, lol) just to make sure, if it is not possible I would put neosporin and then some Aquaphor healing ointment so the pee or poop doesn't get in touch with his butt.
Hope he was ok and jump back up and keep enjoying his naked butt time, lol.

Neosporin and the diaper should be enough. Considering where you live (very jealous on this cold, rainy NY morning), think about letting him run around w/o the diaper for short periods of time so that the scrape can dry-out a little bit too- especially right after a bath.

I'd use the Neosporin & the diaper. No need for gauze. Poor little guy. He hit a speed bump!

If the cut is deep then bandage it so the diaper doesnt rub against it and keep it clean. If its like a scraped kneeit should be fine. Feed him some sweet potatoes too. They help with the healing process. My favorite is to put baby food sweet potatoes in spagettie sauce as it makes it sweeter tasting.

I'd say just use Aquaphor (that's my everything ointment). And like the others say, try to maybe let him go without a diaper a little more until it heals.
