Is Tempurpedic Worth the Cash?

Me and my DH are about to buy a king size memory foam bed. We were looking at the Tempurpedic vs. the other brands. Some friends at work who purchased the Tempurpedic said that the difference in the material wasn't worth the difference in price. You ladies seem to know so much so I thought I'd ask you! What memory foam beds do you have and are they really as similar as they seem once you get them home?

Thanks yous ladies!

What can I do next?

We actually have a knock-off of the tempurpedic that we purchased at American Furniture. I have a friend that has a tempurpedic brand mattress that feels exactly the same as ours. We absolutely love the mattress. Plus it has a 10 year warranty. We thought longevity would be the difference between tempurpedic and the knock off so we were excited to hear it came with a warranty.

Once we are ready for a new bed (1 more year) I think we will be getting the Organic Serenity Natural Dunlop Latex Mattress By Savvy Rest. Read this article: http://www.younghouselove.com/2009/07/sleep-easy/

I believe they have a store in Denver/Ft. Collins. I heard if you toss and turn alot then a temperpedic might not be for you. Good luck! And whatever you invest in please update us ;-)

I don't know how Tempurpedic compares to other memory foam beds because we have only had a Tempurpedic. But we love it! Previous to this bed we had a sleepnumber and while it was great at first, after a while I found that I would slide to the middle of the bed because my husband liked to keep his side very low. Which left me sleeping in a crater. Then we got our Tempurpedic two years ago (the one with the pillow top on it) and I love it! I even got the travel Tempurpedic pad for when we go on vacations and visit relatives, etc. because I have such a hard time sleeping on other mattresses. So, I say YES it is definitely worth it and I would not want to live without it.

We bought a "store brand" comparable to Tempurpedic from Crown Bedrooms and have been satisfied with it. However, last year we bought a 3 inch memory foam matress topper for our camper from Costco and my hubby thinks it's even better than our $1500 memory foam topped mattress, so you might want to just try the 3 inch (don't go lower than 3 inches) mattress topper and save yourself the extra money. If you buy it from Costco, try it and don't like it, you can even get your money back!
I hope this helps.

Hi I did a lot of research on this thought I ended up with a Latex mattress instead (feels more like a regular mattress rather than sort of sucking you into the memory foam -- but it's very springy, so I feel every little movement my husband makes, which I don't like), but in terms of memory foam, the Sealy brand is just as good as the Tempurpedic and much cheaper. The heat issues were primarily around the first releases of the mattresses -- now they have air vents and the newer ones don't make people as hot.

Also, you should definitely bring a book and spend 15 minutes laying on the mattress before you buy it. It softens with body heat, so if you just lay on it for 1 minute in the store, you might find it's too soft for you if you're on it all night (the memory foam mattresses also now come in different softnesses).

NO Absolutley not. This is a bed that has a lot of issues. if you are looking for a really good bed that will help support your back and give the supports you need then you should look at My comfort bed. If you go to www.itstheblue.com I don't know if you live in Utah or not but go to the Riverdale store and talk to them about a gel bed I gaurantee this bed this far better than then tempurpedic and it will last longer. They are having a great sale this weekend. I promise you you will never have a better night sleep I have been sleeping one for 8 years and would never give it up!!!!!!

I haven't read all the posts, but I am surprised by some that I have read. I bought my tempurpedic about 6 years ago for my bad back. It took me about a week to get used to it, but LOVE it.
I am from CA and had no air conditioning and never had an issue with it being too hot, at least not anything unlike a regular mattress.
My husband was skeptical and wanted his mattress when we moved into our house, but after all the lifting and moving, after 10 minutes on that mattress, I was in tears and had to move to the guest room with the tempurpedic. It did take my husband about a week or so to get used to it, but he also loves it now too.
I don't know about the knock offs, but I like the 20 year life of the mattress and not having to ever flip it over.

We bought a Tempurpedic and actually sent it back after the 90 day trial. We felt it wasn't worth the money. It never really seemed to conform to our bodies, it did a little but not like it does on the commercials. We bought ours after my brother raved about his (he really likes his and has had no problems). We thought maybe the material would start to relax as it got older but didn't want to take the chance after the 90 days. I think there are a lot of people out there who love their Tempurpedics, we just didn't think it was worth it. If you do buy one I would consider doing it through Brookstone. I think there are hidden fees and charges through other mattress stores and possibly fees associated with the 90 return policy. Through Brookstone there were no fees for returning the bed.

I don't have advice, just another question because we are considering buying the tempurpedic as well. My husband is kind of a big guy and when he tosses and turns so do I. Does this bed really stay put like they say. I can't get any sleep.

I'm glad you posted this question, I've been wondering the same thing. My friend bought the Tempurpedic for her back pain, but it didn't do much for her, and she said it was hot to sleep in. I have a little knock-off brand that goes on top of your regular bed and it can get warm too (good in winter, bad in summer), but it's added years to our regular mattress! Good luck shopping

My husband convinced me to try the sleep number bed when we needed a new one. I was skeptical, but LOVE IT! I was pregnant when we got it, and he has a bad back. The air is awesome for distributing the weight and pressure - I was very comfortable throughout the entire pregnancy, and his back is much better. It's awesome!

Go look at RC Wiley. I think the brand they carry is memorypedic? Something like that. We love it. We heard with the Tempurpedics there is not enough ventilation so you get hot. We have not had this problem with the Memorypedic. Try checking out RC Wiley and speak with a sales person there. We love ours! Good luck!

My parents and 3 siblings have the sleep number and love it. However, my husband wasn't impressed and really wanted to research the temperpedic. I thought it felt hard but we layed on it for over 30 minutes and after much research and laying on beds, we ended up with one of the firmer ones. It took a couple nights to get used to it but now I don't wake up with a sore back and if my husband gets up really early or in the night, I don't always wake up as it really doesn't bounce at all. I am a light sleeper and would always wake up when he rolled over or got up but now, I sleep right through it. We tried the knock offs but they seemed to stay indented longer where we had layed and didn't have the firmness nor the warranty we wanted. Our friend is a chiropractor and bought a sleep number but doesn't really like it, he just got a deal on it because he is a chiropractor. He said he thinks the temperpedic is better on your back. The lady at sleep number disagreed with this but.... I love the temperpedic. Let us know what you decide. Good luck.

Hi Manige,

If you want to get an education about beds, go to Innomax and see Scott or Sandy. We had shopped all the "mall" stores and didn't not get this kind of service or education. It's off the beaten path, but owrth it!
Innomax, 5320 West Elk Place, Denver, CO 80216 ###-###-####
We bought something simular to the tempurpedic and I have never slept so good! I actually don't experience lower back pain any longer when I get up.

I am with Joann! When my husband and I went to buy our bed after we got married I really wanted a Temperpedic. My parents have a sleep number and they recommended that above anything else. I still really wanted to at least try one. I have a good friend who has one so I asked if I could try it out. I stayed at her house for a girls night...and holy cow. I am always cold when I sleep. It can be 100 degrees in the room and I have to still be covered up, but I was SO HOT in that dang bed. It was comfy, but nothing amazing. I sweat all night long and could not cool off. The foam just holds the heat in. So we went with a sleep number. It is the best bed ever. When we got the bed, the sales lady mentioned that they are great when you’re pregnant because you can pump up the firmness when you back hurts. We laughed it off because we didn’t plan on having kids for 4 years. Little did we know I was pregnant at the time and I was so relieved we bought it because it was WONDERFUL. I sleep on about 30 or 35, 45 to 50 when I was pregnant. My husband sleeps on 70 or 75 so it is really hard to believe that we both could have been comfortable on a bed with no adjustable firmness. In 10 or 15 years when the sleep number is run it course, we will get another one. I will not sleep on anything else! If you are set on having the memory foam I am pretty sure that Sleep Number has a memory foam mattress cover. I always wanted one, but after my Temperpedic experience I will not get one because of the heat factor. It’s a big purchase and I wish you luck!

We have a tempurpedic and we love it. When we travel we miss it. It is a pain to move due to the layers and the weight (and we also have a king size) but, it is worth it. We have had ours for 4 years and is holding up great. there is a little bit of indentations where we tend to be.
When it arrives it is very firm and you have to give it 4-6 weeks. When it gets cold it gets hard (IE leaving for vacation in the winter, turning your heat down....it is very firm upon the return). Also I find it warm. My husband loves that...me not so much. (i think they have something new to decrease that??) We tried a lot of other beds but, not foam beds (pillow tops, sleep number) and this is the one we agreed upon. We both still LOVE it.

We bought a knock-off Tempurpedic from American Furniture Warehouse and all I can say is DON'T DO IT!!! I still really like it, but my hubby HATES it. He is an average size guy with a rather large size butt. His side has totally sunken in that area and will not come back to its original position. As a result he has a bad back. We are thinking about getting a sleep number bed instead since I hear nothing but good things about it.

We have a Tempurpedic - bought it about 2 years ago, and DH and I absolutely love it. It feels exactly the same as it did the day we bought it. I have never tried any other brand though, so I can't compare. All I know is that when I get back from a multi-night vacation somewhere I am thrilled to crawl back into my own bed. My parents tried out one of those sleep # beds and sent it back within the warranty. They then bought a Tempurpedic type (may have been a knock-off). Based on the comments posted here, it sounds like this is a highly personal experience.

I should mention that DH was concerned about the 'heat' factor (because he is quite warm when he sleeps), but he loves our bed too, and has not noticed a problem or complained.
