Getting a Brazilian Wax?

I've been thinking about getting one for a while now, but have always been nervous about it. Seeing as how it's finally spring i figure now's a good time. How much does a brazilian wax cost? How long does the waxing take (for your first visit anyway, i imagine the first time takes the longest) Is there anything i should do beforehand (like trim/let it grow out?) What position(s) are you in for the wax? Is it really awkward at first getting waxed there or is it not as bad as I’m thinking it will be. On a scale of 1-10 how bad does it hurt getting waxed? How long is it before you have to go back and get waxed again? Anything else you can tell me would be appreciated, thanks

What can I do next?

I gotta tell you...I got lasered last year instead, and it was the best thing ever.
No upkeep, no $$ for upkeep, no awkward growing out time.
It took 6 treatments, and I did a Groupon for $150.

I'd look into that if you're looking at waxing - whether you do just bikini or whole thing. Sooo much easier long term, and less painful.

I highly recommend that you get a regular bikini line wax before you jump into getting a Brazillian.

Go to a place that specializes only in waxing - not a spa that also does facials, etc. You want someone who does this every day and knows what she's doing. Hair length should be trimmed (link a little longer than the length of the hairs in your eyebrows). How long it lasts depends on main things - how fast your hair grows, but also if your hair is light or dark, and if your skin is light or dark (obviously dark hair on pale skin is going to show up more quickly other hair/skin combinations like blonde hair on light skin).

Hell on Heels has good advice. I've never had one take as little as 10 minutes to do a full Brazilian, usually more like 30 minutes. Definitely ask friends for a personal recommendation as they go a long way. I would never get one at my nail salon for example. I go to an Aveda salon.

My aesthetician just starting using a soy wax and it's so much less painful than the normal hot wax, with a substantially shorter "recovery" time. I agree to take ibuprofen about 30 mins before the procedure. First time is the worst! It will take 1-3 days to reduce puffiness and look pretty. Needs to be redone about every 4-6 weeks. And yes, do grow your hair out for about 3 weeks before going in. They will do any necessary trimming before waxing.

Also, my girl sends me home with a small sample size of lotion/oil to apply to reduce ingrown hairs. Don't forget to tip about 20%. The more frequently you do it, the less the hair grows back and the easier it is to have done. I love it and will never go back to shaving!

I agree with all of Mynewnickname's advice. Definitely go to a place that only does waxing, and yes, unless you have an incredibly high pain tolerance, do a bikini wax first, and then move on to the brazilian on the next visit. Depending upon where you go, a brazilian will probably run in the $50-60 range, and will take about half an hour. The first time you get waxed, it will be worse than childbirth. If you have Vicodin, take it before you go. (I'm only halfway kidding.) In all seriousness, don't drink coffee (or other caffeine) before you go, and do take some Ibuprofen half an hour before, if you can. It will help.

At the place where I have my waxing done, they have you lay down on the table and put your legs in a "frog leg" position. I'm not gonna lie, it's awkward, but these ladies who do this for a living see a whole lot of anatomy on a daily basis, and it doesn't seem to bother them whatsoever! So that makes it less awful, I suppose. ;)

I think it's best to make your next appointment before you leave, and to make sure you don't go any longer than 4 weeks between appointments. For whatever reason, it seems to hurt a lot more if you go longer than that.

The standard rate around here is $30. It costs more if you go to a salon. It shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes front and back. If the place you choose says its any longer than that, run-don't walk to another place. If it takes someone longer than that-they don't have much experience. My lady has me lie with my feet together and knees apart. You should plan to go every 3 to 4 weeks. The first time is the most painful then it gets a little more tolerable each time after.

Waxing itself was uncomfortable, but not imbearable. your upkeep depends on how fast your hair grows, and how groomed you want to be. It gets easier with time.

You might want to give yourself a day or two between waxing and say a pool or beach outing so that your skin can have a chance to recover. You might look like a plucked hen.

Best,

I'm with Manda. Lasering is so much better, and it's permanent.

That being said, I can't imagine having laser done for a full Brazilian. What if you end up not liking it? What if all of it doesn't go away? You would be forever having to tweeze out hairs that show up. I have no interest in looking like a little girl again, so for me, the draw is looking "kept".

Instead of a Brazillian, why don't you put on your favorite thong or bikini and wear it to the waxer? Have her wax you so that nothing shows outside of it. Then see what you think. That's what I did. My husband and I kind of "decided together" on what was natural looking and nice. Kind of an upside down triangle for me...

Then I went and had laser treatment done using the outline I decided I liked after trying waxing. The laser treatment worked great to get rid of all the unwanted hair and leave what I wanted. Even though laser treatment is expensive, it's really cheaper in the long run because you're done and that's it. I had it done for my underarms and legs too. I haven't shaved in 4 years.

About hurting - yes it hurts. Both procedures do. Awkward? Yes. But the ladies are professionals.

Make sure the place is clean. NO double-dipping in the wax with the sticks. Look around the room. There should be no wax drippings on the walls or floor. If there is, leave. The last thing you want is an infection.

Here's what I hated about the waxing. It would hurt for a week and I'd have little red bumps. I'd look great for a week, and then week 3, I'd be growing it out and it was itchy. Week 4 I'd end up going back in for it all over again. I also worried about the thin skin always being "ripped at". Kind of worrisome.

You do have to let it grow out enough for the wax to pull it out. They'll tell you how much on the phone before you go.

Btw, if you are blonde, don't bother doing laser treatments. It doesn't work on blonde hair...

I just got my first Brazilian wax. I was 10m post baby, and I go for my second appointment this week. I had let it grown out, but for about a week nothing really grew. Definitely try it out, women get them done all the time. If they can, you can! :) good luck

dont tense up, just relax...
