Mommas: Do You Prefer Waxing, Shaving or Going Natural?

I apologize if this has been asked before, but I wanted to know other mamma's thoughts. It's almost summer, so there have been crazy specials being advertised about waxing. I have always been a shaver, but it takes work every day and then occasionally you get irritation or cuts "down there" and you know...not fun. So I am seriously considering booking my very first professional waxing. I am terribly nervous so I wanted to know what other ladies have done or do. Would electrolysis be a better option because eventually it wouldn't have to be repeated? Is it terribly awkward having a stranger perform this on you? Do you have conversations like you would with your hair dresser, lol? Tips or anything that might make things less awkward? Help me!

Edit: I forgot to mention that it's Brazillian! Sorry ladies!

I actually don't wax or shave "down there". I prefer the beard trimmer. I don't want to be bald, but I do want to be tidy. I just make it as short as possible, then I don't have to do it very often.

I shave up the sides and trim the middle.
I actually don't think about my v** hair that much.

I don't like it to look like my 8 year old but I do prefer it to be trim and neat. Not too short or it itches and not to long or it feels unclean. I would never wax because I feel, like after two large babies, no one but my husband wants to see all that. And how awkward and uncomfortable. Yikes.

Question: Since you don't seem real comfortable with this, I have to ask...is this another one of your husband's grand ideas about what you should do with your body? I ask because you posted a question about how he wants you to wear shorty short shorts and you are not comfortable with that. If he is the one asking you to do this...I would tell him yes, but only if he has his scrotum professionally waxed and dresses up like the cop in the Village People (the one with the shorty short shorts). ;)

Good luck!

None of the above.
I'm fine with natural, but the guys I date prefer to keep sex and flossing separate activities, so I use a beard trimmer to prune the bush.
I don't like razor burn, and I'm not paying someone to rip out my body hair by the roots.
Brazilian? Not if you paid me. Not even if you put a gun to my head.

I think you need to do what YOU want to do and not be so influenced by what your hubby seems to be pressuring you to do. Don't allow your husband to pressure you into dressing or grooming per his choice.

Your last post was on the subject of how you dress and you won't wear sleeveless or strappy tops. You don't have to dress like a hoochie mama but you can dress like a classy sexy woman without baring all your ASSets...

It is YOUR body. Don't allow him to control you like this.

I agree with good grooming but I do not want to look like a little girl down there... that also freaks my man out as well because it is just weird being bald.

Best of luck to you... I hope you find a way to boost your confidence and self esteem.

the notion that women's pudenda ought to be hairless just strikes me as odd. yet another modern trend this old dinosaur doesn't understand.
i tried shaving the edges years ago, and hated it. itchy and irritated.
the most i've ever done on a regular basis is trim.
but if i were to have it 'done' i don't think i'd be concerned about the awkwardness. you're going to a professional, right? i don't manufacture conversations with my hair or nail professionals, although i like them both very much and enjoy chatting with them when we feel like chatting.

I would suggest that you get comfortable with a regular bikini line wax before you decide to do a Brazillian.

I read your last post because some other moms mentioned it. Ya know, I'm really beginning to wonder how many man haters we have on here. Would it be the end of the world if this is your husband's idea? Of course not! Your last post tells me that your hubby is dying to have a sexy wife by his side. Many women do tend to let themselves go because of motherhood. And their idea of what's "acceptable" changes because of what society tells us. It sounds to me like you may be having this issue currently. You should do whatever makes you feel sexy and Alive. I've never done traditional waxing. But I have done sugar waxing. It's suppose to hurt less. I've also done epilation. But I always end up with in-grown hairs. Dry brushing helps with that.

****Added, I just read post about the bruising. I was only bruised ONCE, and I have been waxed dozens of times. The girl who bruised me was clueless and did not hold skin properly or peel wax properly. I filed a large complaint. You should NEVER bruise if the salon is a good one. If your hair is the right length, their wax is good quality, and their style is professional, they can rip out the thickest and darkest of hair quickly and nimbly with nothing but a bit of redness that fades same day. Go to a good place!!**

My hair is gone for good (except for front triangle) because I got laser treatments back when I had disposable income. BEST decision EVER. For me. I've been smooth and bare so long I can't fathom growing it in-so now that the trend is going back to big bushes for the youngsters (according to Time Out New York anyway) I'm in hot water!! Good thing I'm not trying to bed down any bearded 20-something hipsters.

I used to spend so much time and energy on waxing and shaving and always had hair and ingrown hairs and cuts and stubble to deal with. But anyway. When you go for brazilian wax: THEY SO DO NOT care, they do it for a living, so just leave your inhibitions at the door and pretend you're comfortable. They will put you instantly at ease. My laser lady and wax ladies have all been chatty and friendly..

You can wear a really thin thong and pull it way to the side as they work if you don't want to be totally nude. Be sure to trim the hair to no more than 1/4 inch first because they cannot wax long hair and many don't want to trim it for you.
Waxing is great, but since you need some hair to be able to wax, you'll have that dance to do, of always having some growth....but it's a start. shaving is better in between waxings when you need a sudden shave with no time to wax first because hair isn't fully thick.

I have never waxed any part of my body. I have extremely sensitive skin and have always feared I could have a severe reaction to it. Let's face it, the areas people typically wax are not areas you want to be having severe reactions!!

As far as my grooming "down there", it isn't based on the season. It is based on what my DH prefers. He does not want me to look like our 2 year old daughter down there but he also doesn't like to eat pubic hair while performing oral. So I mostly trim and do shave the (struggling with how to word this :)!!) lips area. For me it's not too difficult and is a good trade off seeing I enjoy what he is willing to give!!

My only advice is make sure you get an experienced aesthetician to do your wax. It should only take 10-15 minutes to do all hair front and back. I once used someone who took about an hour and half to get it done! The first time hurts the worst and it gets a little easier each time.

I went with laser to take it all off.
I just don't feel like there's going to come a point in my life where I'm going to "miss" having hair down there.

After 6 treatments (around $200 with a Groupon)...I no longer have to even touch it with a razor. Smooth as can be.

I have friends that wax...but there's that period where you have to let it grow long enough to re-wax it...which means itchiness...and then what are you supposed to if you need to be in a bikini during that time? Shave it and start over? What's the point?...I just never understood waxing, honestly.

I would never wax down below! I'm too scared to have anything waxed and just the thought of waxing there makes me cringe.
When I shave my legs, I only need to do it 1-2 times a week. Never daily. My leg hair is blonde and just doesn't grow very fast.

An alternative.....Magic Shave! It's a product for black men to remove the hair from their heads. For ladies it's a Brazilian in a bottle! Seriously though, the stuff smells nasty but works great, better than any other depilatory on the market. It's in the ethnic hair care section at grocery stores/pharmacies. I've heard the powder is the best, but I just buy the tube and it's worked fine for me. I tried a Brazilian once, not awkward, but it did hurt pretty bad. Since I already knew about Magic Shave that was it for me, I never went back for another.

ETA - I had bikini laser treatments, didn't work at all for me. So there's a gamble there, they don't work for everyone. Big gamble since they hurt and are expensive.

It is not the least bit awkward and yes you will have normal conversations like with your hair stylist.

My friend does this for a living. She had one customer that was wearing a tampon at the time. When she was ripping the /tape off the tampon came out....yuck!!! You would think she would have cancelled given she had her period but my point is the professionals have seen it all.

Also, you should know that waxing the first time is the worst. It actually left me terribly bruised. After the first time though it got much easier since the hair was not nearly as thick.

FYI...I only got a bikini wax so I wore underwear. Do you want a Brazilian or bikini wax?

Laser hair removal is a god send. It has come WAY down in price. You can get Groupon type deals for somewhere in the $100-$300 range usually. I told my husband that's what I wanted for Xmas one year and he got me a Groupon. Best decision ever. I have sensitive skin and would end up with in-grown hairs and painful bumps, etc. I too was worried about it being awkward but they have you put on paper panties and kind of just pull them to the side. It's not the greatest experience but the girl was nice and put me at ease. I've since had laser hair removal on my underarms, legs, etc. I have had to go back for maintenance on some areas (not my bikini area yet) - 1 round might not do it depending upon how stubborn the hair is but even with 1 round, it will come back in lighter and softer. Its been a couple of years and a little bit of the hair has come back so I do shave every few weeks but it's just a clean up and the hair is light and soft. I will probably go back again for another round sometime soon. You will NOT regret it and, over time, it will be cheaper than waxing (not to mention less painful at least to me)!

I shave but try a wax. I suggest doing a regular wax three times or so to get comfortable with the woman then go for Brazilian.

I shave my legs, I trim "down there" but don't shave. I find it uncomfortable to be bare and my husband prefers it more natural anyway. I've never had any complaints. I do trim it shorter during swimsuit season so there's no escapees.

I've been temped to wax, but never gone through with it. You know, strangers "down there" and all.

I do love being smooth and clean and I do try to at least stay trimmed year round...but I'm not so flexible and I'm...well...I'm quit fuzzy. It's always a chore and takes FOREVER.
