For All the Creative Folks, What Color to Paint a Dresser

You could try a shabby chic look, It's real easy. First paint beige, then, get some craft paint (the little bottles are under $1 at Michaels) Get a darker beige brown. Water down the craft paint, then paint over the beige. Let it stay on about 10 minutes, then wipe off. Some of the darker paint will stay on to give it an antique look. I did that with one of my dressers and it looks neat. I painted a mirror frame the same way and it looks like it all came together.

i would maybe go a darker neutral color....like a burgundy or pumpkin or even eggplant!!

I would say it depends on whether you want the dresser to be a focal point of the room and pop, or blend in.

But I saw a shade yesterday, a green somewhere between a celery and a lime on a dresser and I loved it. I actually think it could either pop or blend in, depending on the other colors in the room.

I am currently doing my matt purple. with beige I think a deep green would look lovely.

Bright red or lime green! Look in home decorating magazines to get an idea of what you like. If the rest of the room is really neutral I think you should go with a really bright and fun color. Maybe add one or two things in the room that same color. A red (or whatever color you choose) tableside lamp or a decorative pillow on the bed with that color as well. It will be fun. You could do turquoise too...something really bright. Look at ideas on the IKEA webpage. They like to make a room pop with a red dresser and a few red things here or there.

Black would look really good with the beige but I personally don't care for dark furniture because it shows dust after one day. An off white would look good with the beige walls, too. I wouldn't go with a cream. I painted some furniture in our daughters' room an off white and it looks great.

I know you didn't ask for it but thought I would share some advice that a man who paints for a living gave me when I was about to begin painting the girls' furniture. He said to buy a good brush and really good paint because it is a lot of work and you want it to last. He also said the biggest mistake people make when they paint furniture is trying to smooth out brush strokes by going back and forth over and over. He said do not try to smooth out brush marks. The paint will smooth out as it dries. It worked. Last, give it plenty of time to dry, not just to the touch. It takes a while for it to REALLY dry enough to resist dings. I learned that the hard way with some other furniture that I painted years ago.

I am wanting to do this with a charcoal grey color, and some accent pieces like the nightstands in a soft robin's egg blue, then distress them for a shabby chic look. If I were you, I'd look at pinterest, search for painted furniture and there you will get tons of ideas.

Depends on what "theme" you want to go with.

If you do the red's and burgundy's it's romantic
If you do the blue/greens (I like the seafoam/teal color going around again) it's beachy and light.

You could always go with a white, and do a trim in a different color.

What about like a pastel green...light light green would look nice:)

it depends on how dark or light you want the room. If you want to try something really fun you could start with a basic color (like some that were suggested depending on what color you like) and maybe do a crakle or antique on the top and look for some funky knobs or handles. That way if you change your mind knobs are easy to change. You can even look on line for some ideas. I know there is a DIY site that you could look up some fun ideas. I love doing that kind of stuff but just don't have the space or time with two small children.

I once painted an old set that I rescued a really cool khaki/taupe color & LOVED it! Very neutral...went with anything.

The darker you go the more dust will show.

You know what, you sent me into dream mode. Let me share what I'd dream of doing, and you pick whatever part of it that interests you! :)

I'd so totally experiment with colors! Walls and comforter are comfortably neutral and beige. Excellent. Gives us some room to play with.

If the room is quite large, open and with a lot of natural light, then I'd go with a bold color. Something like a deep cherry, or a charcoal gray. Or better, hit the metallic shades - copper, pewter, bronze.
If the room is relatively closed and cozier, then I'd go with good old stark white. White always gives a roomy feel. Maybe add some cool kind of door knobs or handles on the draw, to give it a creative touch!

Actually, if I had the opportunity, I'd change my curtains to kind of highlight the new color (since the walls and bedding will remain the same). For eg., if I painted the dresser and nightstand a charcoal gray, I'd pick white curtains with lemon yellow, gray and green things - flowers maybe, or some kind of geometric print.
If curtains are out of question, then perhaps I'd add a couple of pictures with frame colors to match the new colors of the dresser. Or maybe change a cushion or pillow covers. Just something in addition to the dresser and nightstand, to highlight the efforts and ideas! :)

For any other color, look at the artwork in the room. Since the bedding/walls are neutral, pick a color from this for your inspiration. If you don't have any artwork, then that's where you need to begin! Find what you like, & then the color selection will come easier. :)
