Decorating Help for Dd's Room?

This is an odd question, but I'm terrible at decorating and looking for some help/ideas for my daughter's room. My DD (2.5 yrs old) is in a "big girl room" with big girl white furniture and a double bed. We've painted her walls light purple and beyond that the room is pretty bare. I don't want "disney" or excessively commercial decorating. Just looking for simple, cute and fun decorating, while I still have control over what her room looks like (hehehe...imagining life in 5-8 years!). I've looked a little on Pottery Barn Kids or Land of Nod. Any ideas of where or how to start? (edit: I'm not very creative or good at crafty stuff)

What can I do next?

I just decorated my daughters' room with Land of Nod bedding, window treatments and and new rug... and I love it!!!! It's beautiful! Girly, but not babyish. I'll be posting pics next week after I receive my wall decals if you're interested.

Butterflies are always nice. Get some butterfly stinsils & paint away! Also, at Kohls a few months ago they sold butterfly shaped mirrors. All different shapes & sizes but none bigger than a piece of paper. They just stick on but are really pretty. Very girlie. :)

For my daughter, we have yellow walls, Pottery Barn green checked curtains (very basic) and added really cute Pottery Barn pink butterfly hook things for the curtains. Then I found an adorable butterfly mobile, and a handmade batik butterfly wall hanging (it's small) and then made a memory board with some batik fabric. I LOVE her room. She's still in a crib (she's 2) and so we have baby stuff in there, but don't plan to change it much when we move out the changing table and crib.

I'd pick something simple (like I did with butterflys) and look for a couple of neat decorations and call it good. Google what interests you. Etsy has lots of cute stuff too.

My DD is 3.5, her bedroom walls are painting a light green color (somewhere between mint green and spring green) and we have a bit of a garden theme going - flowers, ladybugs, butterflies and dragonflies, snails, etc. I actually got wall decals from Pottery Barn Kids that I loved, but I don't know if they still have them now (it was a while ago). The wall decals are great because they stick, but unpeel easily without damaging the paint. I am not big into specific characters (Disney, Dora, etc.) either.

With the wall color being light purple, what about something with fairies, ballet dancers, or rainbows? Or butterflies or birds? I would also check out Garnet Hill or The Company Store for bedsheets, they have cute sets for kids and they might give you some ideas too.

my daughter will be 5 this year and we are going to turn her bedroom into a big girl room her walls are a lavender so we are keeping the walls she has picked out a polka dot bedding cause I wanted something that she could grow with. I'm going to get polka dot wall decals so they can come off easily when wanted and I'm going to paint some of her wall with the chalkboard paint then just accent with some pillows.

I would just pick a "theme" and go with it. I don't care for the "licensed" themes anyway... I'd pick, say, Daisy's, and decorate around that. Paint some white daisy's on the wall, or stencil them, or look for some stick on's in a daisy shape/print. Find a bedspread or comforter with daisies on it. Use window paint to draw daisies on her bedroom mirror. Find a rug with daisies or in a flower shape.

Or if she isn't a girly girl, (Mine isn't) go with something more neutral... like lady bugs.... or horses.

Oh.. and you can get a piece of cloth (whatever color you think is most complementary) and staple/glue it over a cork board... and hang it with ribbon from a drawer pull mounted on her wall. Then she can stick whatever her latest artwork is on it.

I would start with the bedding and go from there. Have all accessories go with the bedding but not necessarily match.
My younger daughter's room is purple too with white furniture. She has a furry purple comforter and hot pink, deep purple and aqua furry/poodle type pillows. I have seen similar ones in Bed, Bath and Beyond. She has white shear valences with small butterflies on them. (JC Penneys) Then I think art work really helps make the room. They have really cute pictures at Home Goods (if you have one near you). I also found adorable little lamps for her with hot pink shades that have little shoes on them in purples, aquas, and lime green. She also has shelves in her room so I cooridinated the picture frame colors with the other things in her room. If you PM me I can e-mail you a picture.

my daughter stenciled butterflies on my granddaughters lavender walls. she then got some gauzy sheer curtains on a plain curtain rod. at the dollar general at halloween they had these big butterfly/fairy wings for a buck. she got those to use as curtain pull backs. just a plain warm comforter and the sheets so that they could still be used as the paint color changed. it was purple on one side and pink on the other. (the comforter not the paint lol) she then went to joann's fabrics and got some more of the gauzy/tulle stuff and made a hanging that went over the bed and got pulled back which gave a princess type look to her bed. no fancy furniture. just an old iron bed and desk which my daughter painted white. I think total she might have spend a hundred bucks.

If you look on Amazon for wall decals, they have literally life sized decals you can put on walls (my daughter personally wanted a ceiling high dinosaur) for around $20-30 apiece, and they have all different kinds of designs. Something large like that on bare walls can really pull a room together.

Personally, I've always leaned more towards "stimulation" than "decoration." My mother HATES my "decorating" style, but my children have always loved it...different educational posters hanging at their level, and basically an eclectic and colorful mix of things they like to look at (maps, retro Pooh pictures, artwork done by my husband and I, blown up illustrations from favorite books, etc.)

Don't forget the ceiling when you are decorating, either! Glow in the dark decals are fun for a ceiling...you can't see them during the day, so they aren't an eyesore, but at night her room can be a galaxy!

You got lots of great ideas. I will add a few things I have done. I found a cute book with lots of vibrant colors. I carefully ripped out the pictures & took them to kinkos (the book was pretty small) to have them blown up a little smaller than an 8x10 picture frame. In the picture frame I put colored construction paper for the background so that the picture was in the frame with a pretty border. You obviously don't have to do the extra step of adding construction paper. Then I bought some butterfly wall hangers at pottery barn kids. I also love there ceiling mobiles.

For my sons Star Wars themed room, I bought 3 picture frames that were long & thin (cannot remember the size). I found a Star Wars calendar & cut out the pics & was able to put 4 pics in one frame & hung all 3 frames next to each other . I also bought some shelves & places star wars figurines on the shelves.

I personally prefer neutral bedding with a decorative blanket folded at the end of the bed. Also decorative knobs can spruce up a room.

For all my kids I got letters to spell their names from Hobby Lobby and spray painted them several shades darker than their wall color & hung them.

All you really need to make it cute is: Bedding, Lamp, Curtains, small rug & some pictures

Hobby Lobby, Ikea, Pottery Barn, HomeGoods etc has great coordinating pieces. Have fun with it.

Walmart has nice cheap decals to sick on the wall that are removeable. Butterflies, flowers and bugs are sweet for that color. You can have her paint some canvas and hang those up for a touch of "child art"

Start with something you like.

With my youngest, it was a bedding.

With my eldest it started with a profile silhouette her teacher made of her.

I love the idea of an alphabet wall but not matching. I like the effect of found things. Check Hobby Lobby you may be able to get ideas there.

I am in the middle of decorating my almost 2 y/o's big girl room. We are painting her walls light green, and doing a garden theme. I found these mini flower beds at target and I am going to buy fake gerber daisy's in all colors to put in them. We also bought her a huge lady bug bean bag at target.
She has blinds, but I got some pretty modern looking flower curtains at IKEA, the flower beds will be placed on white shelves, and I plan on framing or shadow boxing a couple of her little dresses she wore as a newborn that goes well with the colors/theme.
The only thing I am unsure about is getting a vinyl decal. They have a really pretty one thats a huge tree with a few little birdies in it...just not sure yet.
I also didn't want disney theme or anything like that. I wanted something cute, simple, and fresh feeling.
Thats our theme. Good Luck! =)

We have 2 girls and one boy in a room. I did the walls a grayish lavender, but to make up for the boy some sheer gray blue curtains and a bright turquoise rug and a yellow toy bin. Sounds clashy-but tying it all together, I hand drew and then painted in large stars all over the walls in yellow, burgundy, navy, pink red, turquoise and white. I got the idea for all the colors, walls, stars, rug, curtains, by looking through art magazines at impressionist paintings. When I found a painting with a color palette that I loved, I pulled different colors from the image and matched them in sample sizes at Lowe's for the stars. In the painting, the lavender and blues were all in the sky, the white was a maiden's dress, the burgundy and red were in her hair, the bright turquoise (rug) was a highlight in a pond. Even though the colors are a weird mix, the colors are unisex, and I already knew from the painting they would look nice together.
So basically, I painted stars on the wall, threw down a rug and hung some curtains. Cheap and striking. For your daughter you could pick a motif she likes to paint on the wall-snowflakes, clouds, flowers, whatever, and pick curtains that tie into your colors. There are neat decorating kits at Lowes too with ideas.

You may want to get some cute wall decals that are removable. Her tastes will definitely change over the years...........Or- invest in some frames that you can change out the pictures as her interests change... For now you can frame her art and creations.......... or pictures of items she's interested in...

We've had success with wall stickers that are removable and repositionable. Check out Wallstickeroutlet.com They stick on really well but won't damage the walls when you decide to change them.

Go to Hobby Lobby to get some ideas. I painted her cork board edges pink and put pink flowery fabric over the cork and then added some little wooden butterflies to the edges and it turned out so cute. I also got a naked shelf with pegs for her butterfly wings, hats, etc. and painted it pink, added wooden butterflies and it's adorable. I got some really cute framed canvas picture frames that are pink and green with polka dots and love it. Just get creative and have fun with it!

My daughter's room is light purple with deep purple spots on the top. I painted them in different sizes around the very top 1/4. Then she has sheer deep purple curtains and a bead curtain with deep purple circles, with a lamp to match. Wildthings.com

We are blessed to have a grandma who makes quilts so that was taken care of.
Target and Lowe's has a really fluffy purple rug. about $15
IKEA has white flower vases and purple flowers for shelves. $3ish a piece
Hobby Lobby has wrought iron in all sorts of colors to hang on the wall, or buy what you want and spray paint it white. $5-$25
Justice has a really cool butterfly chair in purple too. $60ish We got ours for $45 with the 40% coupon.

Maybe go with an outdoor theme that you could add faries to if you wanted. When my oldest was little, I made clouds out of that white fluffy blanket batting that you can get at the fabric store and hung them from the ceiling using fishing line. I also hung birds and butterflies from the craft store. On the walls we did a giant tree out of scrunched up craft paper, and painted a few woode bird houses for the walls. I then painted grass and stencilled flowers on the walls and dresser. You can also make flower out of tissue paper or fabric for the walls.
Just an idea.
