Home Decorating Question... Edited

We will be moving in the spring, and will be updating a bedroom for my son in our new home. He already has his bedding/motif, and I would like your opinion as to what color you'd paint the walls...

His carpet will be a charcoal gray.

Here is his bedding - the one pictured is for a toddler bed, but the twin size is exactly the same... (he also has matching valances, a lamp, the basic ensemble) - if you hover over the picture, it will magnify a section for you to see the colors more closely:

http://www.target.com/Circo-Hit-Road-Toddler-Collection/d...

We will be getting some custom made vinyl street signs to decorate the walls, with his name, and just some other general signs to personalize his room and to elaborate on the theme...

Keep in mind his carpet will be charcoal gray, and the walls should be a color that will coordinate with his bedding ensemble (white is a no-go for us - hate white walls in most cases), but also something that in a couple years, will still work with the charcoal carpet when we update his bedding...

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions!

So What Happened?

Edited-
When you are referring to the "darker blue," are you referring to the royal/navy blue like in the word VROOM, or the darker shade of sky blue that's on some of the cars?

Also, all of our woodwork is a medium brown, and we are not painting any of that, so that stays...

I would probably go with the green in the grass in the pillow. if you didn't like that, or it was too dark, maybe a paler gray than the carpet.

I like Karen A's suggestion - or if you want just one type of paint, I'd go with a very pale blue (lighter than the background of the comforter) or a paler version of the green in the pillow.

Good luck - sounds like a fun room!

Hi L.
From a holistic point of view bright colours are not supposed to be used in bedrooms as they stimulate the mind.
Green is a very calming colour and ideal for bedrooms and will still go with charcoal.

First of all, those are adorable sheets and I love your idea with the street signs! I had an icey gray/blue wall color in high school called Rhinestone and I loved it since it was NOT white but looked awesome with anything (and I had a gray carpet). Depending on the general size of his room and how much natural light it gets, you might want a lighter color (if it will be his "permanent" room and he will be spending more actual time in it as he gets older). If it is just for sleeping, you could pull off a darker color since it will help at night, but I am not good at suggesting dark colors for other people. :) Have fun with moving and redecorating! I can't wait until we're there!

I would do the green in the grass of the pillow (but make it a nice tasteful sage wall green if the actual exact print color is too bright)

Or, depending on his personality if you think it wouldn't be too dark, possibly the red in the cab of the large truck.

Blue tends to get depressing when mixed with dark carpet if you're not careful, but might work.

I would go with the medium blue to match the cars or the light grey color and then just decorate with a lot of color.

I love charcoal gray carpet. I would do a pretty, light dove gray, with maybe one accent wall in a medium royal/navy blue color.

I knew right when I read this that it was going to be my sons bed set. His walls were painted a light green before he was born and it doesn't even look bad with this set so I left it. He's had it for a couple years now and I love all the colors.I think a light blue would look good on the walls.

My first thought was three white walls and then the wall behind the bed either the yellow from the bedding or red, dark blue or the green.

However, if you don't want white walls...I am stumped because all the colors on the bedding are so dark that if you paint all the walls that dark it will make the room appear much smaller than it is.

You could do the walls in the light/baby blue...that will go very nice with the charcoal carpet and be a color that will be easy to match again...but then you run the risk of the room being "baby-ish" for when he gets bigger with pale blue.

Let us know what you decide...post a pic.

What about red for the walls? That would work down the road too if your son is an OSU fan...grey carpet and red walls, add a few accessories and you've got an easy transformation from "kid" room to "bigger kid" room.

What about painting the room to match the light blue colour in the bedding and then adding a 'road' border using a charcoal colour to match the carpet and yellow for the line. This would help to prevent the walls from being one over powering colour and would go great with the theme.
Good Luck

We did our wall in a darker gray with white trim and white ceiling. This would also represent the color of a highway and the street signs would stand out. This will be so easy to convert to an older childs room too. But remember baseboard, window sill and all trim work in white. Door too if possible. it sounds funny, but it turned out great and now its a guest room with white and black spread and curtains and black and white photos. This is one room i have not had to change much, people always say wow when they see it. Have fun...

Three light blue walls the color of the background on the comforter and one dark blue accent wall the color of the vroom. Masculine and generic enough to grow with him for a while.

I love the bedding, it is so cute! I would use one of the soft/light green colors from the bedding or a soft/light yellow. Both colors would match the carpet and the bedding, along with being calming colors.

I did the sports theme from Target. I painted the bottom half of the wall navy blue, left a 1 ft. white strip above the blue, then topped off with a 1 1/2 in. red stripe above the white. I put the sport decals from Target in the white space as a sort of border. It turned out really well.
We were considering the bedding you choose and for that I wanted to paint the bottom of the walls yellow or light blue. I was going to paint a gray 1 to 1 1/2 ft. border mid wall and paint the yellow dashes to make it look like roadway, then paint the top yellow or light blue. Then buy the vehicle decals for the "roadway."

You could paint with 2 different colors. Picturing the room as a square paint 2 connecting walls the light blue from the bedding and the other 2 the dark blue, or 2 walls light yellow and the other 2 light blue or the darker blue. A friend of mine painted the 4 corners in her daughters room 4 colors. Pink, yellow, light blue and a light green. It is really cute. You could try that with the colors in his bedding. Another thing you can do is paint the top half light blue and the bottom dark blue. I did that with my daughters room. I painted about 2/3's of the wall a light yellow and the bottom part a medium purple. It matched her bedding and was so cute. I divided the colors with a border that matched her bedding. Everyone loves it. Good luck. It's fun planning a childs room.

I would suggest either a light yellow or light bluish/gray to match the colors in the bedding and help balance the darkness of the carpet.
