Ok, Mamas - this is a fun one! : )

Twice a yr, my sis hosts a beer tasting contest for girls only. There is always a theme (cowboys/indians, super heros, etc..)
My first yr (Super Heros), I was "super mom" with a baby attached to my leg, hair in rollers, etc.. - 3rd place.
My second yr (cowboys/indians), I brought a friend & we worked as a team - presented our delicious beer complete with an OUTSTANDING skit using Native American language (spoken AND signed), face paint/costumes......2nd place.

Coming up is a 1980's theme & I will have my friend as a partner again....I WANT TO WIN!

We could go in so many directions : big hair / heavy metal rockers w/ lots of makeup and torn clothes, valley girls w/ turned up polo collars, aerobics chicks w/ spandex & leg warmers, '80's TV show characters, etc.....The possibilities are endless, which is why I'm asking for some guidance.

Looking for any and all suggestions!
According to my sis, the KEY to winning is - 1) costumes 2) presentation (song/skit) 3) high alcohol content of beer <--which I have on LOCK ! lol

What can I do next?

Sounds so fun!

Wayne's World from SNL. dress up as Wayne and Garth. You two can replicate the talk show format. You tube it...hilarious!

Farah was '70's.

I would think Pointer Sisters, look them up on youtube and get some inspiration from their looks. Or one of the nighttime soaps such as Dynasty.

You could also go with the power suit, big shoulder pads, slim skirt, jacket with a peplem and big hair -- don't forget pumps. It would be funny if one of you had on a women's power suit and one of you had on a man's power suit -- usually navy suit with white shirt and red tie.

Thanks for letting me show my age!

The following website goes to The Official Preppy Handbook, THE book everyone in my high school was using as a guide. Note the snootiness content. (I am glad those days are behind me):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Official_Preppy_Handbook

Some of my fondest memories involving clothing includes a pair of sisters who wore homemade mix and match outfits of pink and green with drawings of pigs and other fairly large prints, with matching hand-held handbags with the same material. Ribbons in the hair. Penny loafers. Add a pearl necklace.

Of course, the clothing didn't interrupt the drinking.

Good luck!

Oh, the 80s! I remember them well. And have the embarrassing pictures to prove it. The first thing that comes to mind (obvs) is Madonna -- so there will most likely be a lot of Madonna type costumes.

How about aerobics? Olivia Newton John?

Devo would be cool -- but there were more than 2 of them.

Here's a few good ideas -

The obvious thing would be Cindy Lauper and Madonna type dressing. But I vote for David Byrne's Big White Suit or Devo turtlenecks and hats.

Good luck! Let us know what you come up with!

My college roommate HAD and LIVED the preppy handbook. Pink and green plaid skirt, penny loafers, coke habit accessorized by endless nose bleeds. I was more the oversized shirts with leggings and big hair kind of girl. And Swatch (although, I couldn't afford the real thing, so a fake Swatch).

I'm sure I still have stuff in my closet you could wear...

Don't forget punk! I think Valley Girls and polos is a bit boring. As well, the aerobics chicks are a little boring too.

I would go with punk, metal, or metal. Start shredding those jeans now!

To get the hair going, use hot rollers and then tease it with the most fine tooth comb you can find or a vent brush...then hairspray!

Check out the big hair in these year book pics:

Think Farrah Fawcett hair.
It might be easier if you wore a wig for the hair.

Heavy metal/punk was just starting up, but it kind of bled into the 90's and doesn't identify as 80's so well anymore.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but what about Duran Duran? The 80's was huge for 'Duranies'. I am not ashamed to admit I was one for a time. Big oversize trench coats with Duran Duran buttons all over them (you can print their pictures and make your own buttons), white 80's capezio shoes, 'Flock of Seagulls' type of hair - you know high, but pieces falling in front of one eye, a glove on one hand, big scarves, roxy style shirts. And, you can sing one of their songs - an early one like Girls on Film or Hungry Like The Wolf. that would be hilarious. Just google Duran Duran and Duranies for images and ideas.

I think you're going to get a lot of Madonna and Cyndi Lauper look-a-likes they are the most recognizable from the 80's, so I'd say to stear clear of that if you want to be more original.

Best party I ever went to was an 80s party and there were FIVE Madonnas (okay, one was a man, but he still looked good). I did the Like a Prayer version of Madonna (dark small curls, black slip and bra, dark lipstick, cross necklace, carried a rose). It took Spanx and several shots before I'd leave the house in a slip, but I got a lot of compliments.

I suggest you and your friends go as the many (many) faces of Madonna--most of her songs are very singable as well.

Have fun!

I have always wanted to dress up as the WHAM! Duo from the Wake Me Up Before You GoGo video. I think that would be hilarious. It's totally recognizable but also obscure enough. Remember they had those goofy hats and bi-colored shorts? And the shirts that said something? I am laughing thinking about it.
