What Kind of Paint to Use for Handprint Project

I am wondering if anyone knows of what kind of paint to use for a handprint project. I am planning on having my children "handprint" a tree skirt each year as they grow. I have the tree skirt which is a 100% cotton. It is only dry cleanable. I am wondering if there is a certain kind of paint I should use to make sure it stays put for years, but washes off their skin. Any thoughts from all of you crafty mom's?

What can I do next?

we used the bottles of craft paint also and added some of the stuff that makes it work for fabric. We bought it all at Walmart.

There are craft paints made specially for fabric and can be found at Walmart or Michaels. Be sure that after you do your painting each year that you set the paint by ironing it between 2 sheets of white paper with a medium-hot iron. That will ensure that it lasts forever, no matter how many times you wash it. Have fun!!

I make footprint doormats with my day care kids every year. I take equal amounts of regular craft paint and textile medium (bought at JoAnns or Michaels or maybe Walmart--in with craft paints). The textile medium makes it permanet and washable. I buy PLAID brand, but I know that other company's make it.

Look for anything that is marked permanent fabric and craft paint. They usually come in very small bottles at walmart or craft stores so for a handprint you may need a few bottles of each color. Great idea. Good luck
