Today my 13-year-old broke the growth plate on his middle finger. It was splinted in the ER, but he needs to see an orthopedic doctor as soon as possible. The call center for my clinic's specialists doesn't open until 8:30 Monday morning. I have an insane week next week and will likely need to cancel or rearrange something in order to be able to get him in. TRIA Orthopedics in Bloomington is affiliated with my clinic. They see patients on a walk-in basis seven days a week. However, the online reviews for it are negative. Anyone have personal experience with TRIA? Do they have pediatric specialists? FYI, it was a baseball injury. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We ended up at Twin City Orthopedics in Burnsville today. It was recommended by both another mom in the neighborhood and my dad. The clinic also had walk-in hours on Saturday. He needs to see a hand specialist on Monday so I did not accomplish one of my goals of getting it done before my crazy week begins. At least I have something set up so I can plan accordingly. They didn't think he needs surgery, but they want to confirm that. I didn't have a chance to get prior approval from our insurance company so hopefully it is covered or I might use TRIA after all! It's good to know people have had positive experiences there so thanks. And fingers crossed for no surgery. He's not a very patient patient. (-:

No surgery (whew!), but they casted it because the fracture is at both the growth plate and a tendon attachment point. I didn't trust a 13-year-old boy to follow all of the requirements and restrictions that came with a splint and failure to follow could have resulted in a bumpy and/or improperly grown finger on his right hand (right-handed). He's not happy about the cast. And more good news is that TCO is one of our network providers. I will keep TRIA in mind if needed in the future!

Well, my ex had a full shoulder replacement done at TRIA and he is fine with their work. I've heard positive things from two men I know who have had partial hip replacements done there.

Here's the page from their website that describes their pediatric services and their pediatric specialists: http://www.tria.com/pediatric_services.aspx

In case you end up going to Tria, just thought I would chime in. My daughter fractured her wrist a couple of winters ago and was cared for at Tria. And just a couple of weeks ago she bruised a growth plate in her foot, and was again treated at Tria. I thought they did a really good job with her. Both injuries healed / are healing really well. My husband also went to them when he had a knee injury. He ended up needing physical therapy, and he was quite pleased with them. Good luck to you and your son!
