Hi all. This is my first time posting here. Was wondering if anyone can tell me a little about FT Hood. We will be leaving in September. Was wondering about daycare, housing, and employment. I'm prior Navy so the Army side is new to me. Thanks to all for your help

My sister has lived in Copperas Cove for 14 years and really loves it there. I can giv you the name of a realator that they used to get a house and as long as you love heat and humity, you will be fine.

Hi T.!

I can tell you a LOT about Killeen.
My first piece of advice is be very careful about daycare! Don't mean to scare you, but Killeen has a lot of daycares that pop up out of no where and disapear the same way...My mom has a home daycare there and knows about great daycare alternatives so if you want me to e-mail you some info let me know.
I went to elementary school and some middle, and some high school in Killeen and my parents are retired army and live there now, the best school is Meadows elementary Located on Ft. Hood, if you can get your child in there not sure about the workings of that though. One of the worst schools is Willow Springs Elementary. I know you have a young one but you may be there for a while.
I hear that Copperas Cove is a great place for a house and Harker Heights is nice also even look into Belton, do not live in Killeen unless you absolutely have to. The more on the outskirts you are the better, be careful when you go to the outskirts of Killeen on a street called Rancier do not rent or stay anywhere that requires you to take Rancier to get home. If you decide to rent an apartment or duplex, visit there at several different times of the day, Monday morning, Friday night and Saturday morning and night. You may find things are not always what they seem at certain times of the day.
If you have any specific questions just let me know.

I was stationed in FT Hood. We are now in Germany and we PCS'd here from FT Hood in 2006. There are many new subdivisions and places to live in the area. Killeen is growing. Many people told us not to live in Killeen, but it depends on where you live. There is Harker Heights which is also a nice area. I would compare the property taxes between the places because property taxes in Killeen is much more expensive than I expected. The main areas where people live are: Killeen, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove. There are many new subdivisions near the post side of Killeen. We can talk more off line if you would like more info. Just email me and I can give you more specifics.

Go online to
https://onestop.army.mil
and the website will say and error, but continue with the website. You can find housing information on any Army installation in the world here.
http://www.myarmylifetoo.com
is another web site for families and can be helpful for PCS.
