Hello M.,
My name is K.. We just left Killeen in May after being stationed there for 5yrs. And its really ironic how we are now stationed at FOrt Knox, Ky my husband is an instructor. I have 3 girls 14,12,10 months. I can give you some advice I was a soldier at FOrt Hood and a Army Wife. I was on active duty there from 1999-2002. And worked and went to Tarleton State University from 2003-2008.You and your family will have a blast. There is so much to see and the city is getting very large. Next to Killeen are two other cities Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove. Harker Heights is a really nice place to live and the schools are great. Copperas Cove is about 12 miles or less from Killeen but its really hard traveling back and forth during work hours so you might want to stay closer to post or even on post if you get the opportunity. Fort Hood has great housing. THe housing are really nice and modern. Some things to try and visit while your there are San Antonio the river walk. Austin, Round Rock has wonderful shops and a very large outlet. Sea World. Dave and Busters is a family place in Austin. Also the Alamo there is a Chuckee Cheese in Killeen and a inflatable fun park in Killeen along with putt putt and lots of resturants. If you have any other questions dont hesistate to email me. I loved it cant wait to get back to Killeen.

M.,

There are some areas that you want to stay away from if you plan to live off post. My Husband and I have found South of 190 is good in Killeen, around the Clear Creek area. The summers are hot and the winters are mild. Market Heights in the new development that is was mentioned in Harker Heights in a previous e-mail. They do have some nice stores and resturants in there. I really haven't found a lot to do here, but considering I'm from Fort Worth, I'm used to things being at my finger tips that just aren't here. Anyway, being here isn't too bad, but you go where the Army tells you to go right? That's the life of an Army wife. Anyway just send me an e-mail when you get here and we can get together. Are you planning on living off post or on post?

We moved to Killeen (Ft. Hood) in Nov. 07 with my husband reinlisted too. At first we rented a deplex off of Clear Creek, but decided that since we are going to be here for 6 years to go ahead and buy a house. We still live off of Clear Creek it's in Bridgewood. There are a lot of nice places to live in Killeen in the right area. For as gas it's $3.57 right now. Email me if you have any other questions. When are you guys looking to move to Killeen.

my hubby just re-enlisted back in march and we got stationed here! here's a great site that i just found:
CentralTexasMommies.com
and if you're on cafe mom, look up the killeen playdate group (i can't remember the exact name right now, if you can't find it, look me up on there with my e-mail, ____@____.com, and it should show my groups on my page)
if you're on myspace, look me up too! i'm a member of 2 groups on there for army wives in killeen.
so that aside, gas has been going down, i think it's down to about $3.45 now. i can't tell you about winter weather since we just got here in april LOL but this summer has been HOT. since you're from SC you should be used to the humidity, but as far as the temp, it got up to 105-110 in july most everyday. right now it's getting up to around 95 most days. lots of thunderstorms and flooded streets when it rains (i love the rain, but seems a lot of people hate that around here)
if you have specific questions, e-mail me or find me on myspace ok?

Hi M.,
Congrats on moving to the great Fort Hood. I love it there for sure! My first suggestion would be if you have the option to live on post or off I would chose to live on post because, everything is paid for i.e. rent, water, trash pick up, electric, and gas. Also, the housing is very nice and spacious too. If you chose to live off base in a nice part of town besides paying rent you would pay all or some utilities you could probably rent a two bedroom apartment for around $650 and up. I'm not to sure about the price of gas I'm currently deployed to Kuwait. Fort Hood and the great Killeen has so much to offer great restaurants, lots of shopping, swimming and picnicking at the Balora Lake which is on Fort Hood. The summer months are hot hot hot upwards of 95 degrees and the winters can be a little cold around 40 degrees or so but, the cold weather don't lost long. There is a ton of things to do and I hope you like Fort Hood as much as my family do. So welcome welcome welcome.

There is a lot to do in Killeen, Harker Heights, and Temple. there is a new complex being built in Harker Heights. You can go to the link below to see all the stores and restaurants that have gone in already. When you get to the site, click on property brower at the top. Select Harker Heights.
