Mamas & Papas-

Last weekend, a dear friend gave us a very belated wedding present of an oriental rug. It's a floral design on an ivory field, there is a navy medalian, and flowers in tan, taupe, beige, rust, coral, turquoise, dark teal, black, rust and burgundy. Our living room is beige, and otherwise furnished with IKEA hemnes. It's time for a sofa. We have had the kilppan, and hubs doesn't want the karlstadt (he wants his shoulders and or head cradled. We were going to get the ektorp, but now that we have an oriental rug, it just doesn't seem to fit (too country/ shabby chic).

Any thoughts or ideas for a good sofa? We are open to leather, or something with tidy slipcovers. burgundy, rust, dark teal would probably suit us best. Also, we are open to getting something cheap but comfy (as DS is only 3.5), or possibly spending some real money to get something to give is 10+ years.

Thanks for your suggestions,
F. B.

I love leather with the kids. They are so easy to clean! We have two sets of leather sofas/couches. I will never buy cloth again.

Btw, we bought semi-expensive stuff. The first set is 10 years old, and it still looks new. The other is 5, and it has some teeth marks on it --it turns out my son likes to chew on it while watching TV!!!! My friends laughed at me when I went to buy expensive stuff with small kids. I'm so glad I did. My furniture looks great, and I know it has another good 10 years in it :-)

do you have to use it in the living room? Can you use it in the den? or a bed room? even the guest bedroom?

I'm glad you and your husband were able to work things out. I know for a while there it was iffy!! CONGRATS!!!

i like IKEA - however - not all of their designs are oriental rug style...the Ektorp might be the closest...but not sure...

I would take a picture of it and go to LaZboy or Macy's to look around at what they have...or maybe consider using it for another room in the house...

You don't need to use the rug in the living room.

Take a look at Laz-e boy they always had a great warranty and stood behind their products. They also have custom options available. Many of the fabric choices are the same cost as the floor model and it doesn't take that long to get delivery.

You can't go wrong with leather--unless you have a cat.

And with leather, there's a H-U-G-E price range.
Decide what you want to spend & know that the life if the sofa will be proportional to that.

Leather holds up to 2 legged monsters--big and small--and canine 4-legged ones quite well.

Have you looked at CB2? They are owned by Crate & Barrel but generally not as pricey. We have Oriental rugs and have never worried that the color of the sofa in any way 'match' the rug. Rugs look fine with everything. We had our sofas before we had our son so we just have never worried about it. Food is only in the kitchen and really our sofas look just as good now as before we had him (he is 8, the sofas are older than that).

I don't have brand suggestions, but I would go with a cheaper model with a kid that age. Our furniture was purchased shortly after we got married about seven years ago and could stand to be replaced, but I'm waiting until kids are little bit older so I'm not always stressing about stains or spills! I'm pretty strict about no food outside the kitchen/dining room, but it seems there's always something potentially gross to deal with (i just had to say "Don't lick the couch!", there's a new one).
