Single Mom - San Antonio,TX

I'm a single Mom to a wonderful four year old and I also works full time. I was wondering how other single parents find the time for some "ME" time. I miss the adult interactions of just going out to a movie or even just dinner. I have no babysitter so it's kind of hard to do any of these things. I was just wondering for single parents if you take your kiddos with you every where, or if you were able to find trustworthy and safe babysitters and are able to do things.

What can I do next?

Find a mom that you can swap babysitting with. It is usually a win-win as children can entertain each other and it is not difficult to babysit someone else's child.

Finding a babysitter you like can take some time but it is soooo worth it! Try the teenagers in your neighborhood or church. Is there a university nearby? Maybe someone you know has a daughter attending who could use some spending cash. Start by inviting the sitter to have dinner at your home to get to know eachother better. Test them out with an easy situation such as when your child is already asleep at night or in the middle of the day when it's just play time. When you are comfortable enough with the babysitter, move on to more challenging times like during dinner or putting your child to bed. It helps to have a handful of babysitters who can come to your house and also some moms in the neighborhood who can watch your child at their house. Then get yourself out and about doing something fun at least once a month. I attend a monthly book club which is held at night when our kids are in bed. If you can find someone to watch your child for a whole day once a month, you will be amazed at what you can get done and the balance it can create. Good luck!

I usually end up taking my son with me just about everywhere we go or we do not go anywhere at all, even when parents are in town and offer to babysit. But for the most part, I try to interact with other parents (some who are single and some married) and we take our children to the park, museum, zoo,etc and while they play we have adult time by talking about each others lives and issues. I also am apart of a mother's ministry group in my church and we meet twice a month and during that time of fellowship are children are in daycare 2 rooms down where they play and learn little life lessons. This has been a great help for me in just having some adult interaction and both my son and I look forward to going. I would suggest finding people who may be in a similar situation or even try a meetup group that has outings for both you and your child.

my ex takes my daughter 2 nights a week ussually, mostly its filled with errands and shopping so i can make best out of my time with her, but I also get in some M. time. If yu don't have an ex thats involved at all or friends or family, look up local y's or sports clubs, a lot of them have moms night outs, or use a local teen i'm sure your 4 year old would love to interact with a "big kid"/teen for the night

If your child goes to daycare see if the some of the teachers babysit. I work at a family center and am asked to babysit often. Also if you go to a church maybe someone there.

I have my mom, sister and best friend as babysitters. That being said I am very rarely out. More often than not my friends or family come over with there kids and we will order take out and sit chat while the kids are playing. I was out on Saturday night though for my friends birthday, just a few drinks in a bar, watching a great band and chatting - it was fabulous!! lol Can you get to know other moms with kids? You can take turns going to each others houses, have some dinner and some adult conversation while the kids are playing.

Yes by all means you need a babysitter. I was widowed when I was pregnant with my first child. She went once a month and spent the weekends with her grandparents (of my husband who died so she could have that relationship) beginning around 3 and I also had a teenage girl across the street who babysat on weekends when I would go out on a date or with friends. Your life and the life of your child will be more well rounded.

Well, I'm not a single mom, but my husband travels ALOT so most of the time it's just my daughter and I. I have a made some great "mom" friends with kids around the same age as my child. I have 2 moms who I feel very confident leaving my child with, and we swap.. so it's free. I don't do babysitters either.
