Hi Moms-
My husband and I are celebrating our 5 year anniversary in December and looking for a get away destination. With two young kids at home we want to stay within driving distance. (3-4 hours from Schaumburg area) (The kids will be staying home with Grandma & Grandpa.)

Does anyone have recommendations for a romantic getaway in December? It would be nice if it was somewhere with things to do in the middle of the winter, but it would be ok if there wasn't as long as there were things to do at the hotel (ex. spa).

Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

There is an incredible destination spa in the Dells called "Sundara Spa". It is ranked one of the top 5 spas in the country. (It is SO not the Dells) I discovered it a few years back when trying to find a great place to go for my sister's birthday. Since then I have had my bachelorette party there, other birthdays gatherings, my husband and I went there for a "mini-moon" right after our wedding, and we have returned there for our subsequent anniversaries.

It is an amazing place. You will feel transported out of the midwest in a very "fung shui" sort of way. It is intensely romantic and relaxing. Though beautiful in the summer, it is also heavenly in the winter as the snow caps the towering pines that seclude it.

It is a spa---which means it is not a "cheap" get away. I will tell you though, it is worth EVERY penny. Really. Pay to stay at the spa in one of their gorgeous suites and treat yourself to a great facial/massage. There are many things to do while there - if you want to - hot tub, purifying bath ritual, yoga, relaxation, hiking, etc. The feather beds are divine. They offer a great breakfast and it is usually about a 3 1/2 hour drive from the NW suburbs. I was there in May and we are already planning another stay before the winter. We love, love, love it there. And, my husband adores it just as much! You also can sometimes get some great package deals in the winter.

The website is sundaraspa.com Check it out. You will be soooooo happy that you did.

How about Chicago, it's close, you don't have to drive far, there is lots to do and you should be able to shop around for a nice hotel and a decent rate. Good luck!

What about Pheasant Run in St. Charles? My husband and I did that for our anniversary. We stayed in a two-story suite that had a tub big enough for a couples bath. There is a Mario Tricoci Spa, a comedy club, theater with productions or concerts just about every day, great resturants...and more. It's quite reasonable too!

How about Door County, WI. My husband and I went to Sturgeon Bay for our first anniversary (its in February - so it was winter). You could stay at a bed and breakfast. Do a wine tour at the Door Peninsula Winery. Drive all over there - its just beautiful. Check out the websites for door county. Its really a beautiful place to visit.

Enjoy,
Aarti.

You could go to Springfield or St. Louis (4.5 hours). St. Louis has a really cool Nutcracker Ballet at the Powell Symphony Hall during December.
