Ladies, I really need your help!
Hubby and I want to get away for a weekend to spend some quality time together. It has been 3 years since the last time we snuck away by ourselves. We don't have a ton of money to spend becuase we are also doing an entire week vacation with the kids this summer.
Is there anywhere in Illinois or Wisconsin that you would recommend? Some cute little town that is perfect for couples trying to escape from their kids? shopping, walking, wine tasting, great food???

Check out Harbor County in MI- it's just 1-1.5 hours from Chicago. It has everything that you've mentioned.

If you like architecture, you might want to check out Columbus, IN. It's a small & charming town south of Indianapolis that happens to be a absolute must for architects and those who love it- there are tours, etc. Brown County, IN is cute and close by Columbus too.

Galena is amazing. There are winerys, shopping, great resturants etc. Very quaint. The Best Western Designer Inn & Suites is fab. Very reasonable. Indoor/outdoor pool, fitness, free breakfast. You can get rooms with jacuzzi tub or not. Fried Green Tomatoes is out of this world for a nice dinner. We were just there at the end of March. It is a place that you will want to visit again & again.

Galena is great. Lots of shops, nice restaurants and alot of history if you are interested in that. Perfect for walking around. There are hotels nearby or stay at one of the many B&B"s. I love going there. I hear Door County and Macinac Island is very nice as well. Where ever you go, check the visitors bureau for special events. Galena has quite a few and sometimes it gets pretty busy.

Have fun!

I highly recommend Lake Geneva! My Husband and I have stayed at Lake Lawn Lodge and the resort is really nice. They have a couple great restaurants there too! You can always check out their website (i'd google it) and they sometimes have some great deals! Downtown Lake Geneva is not to far from Lake Lawn Lodge, I'd say 5-10 minute drive! Downtown is wonderful, lots of shops and the Lake is right there. You can sit on a bench and just stare out onto the water, so relaxing! Of course that's after you need a break from all the shopping ;) Good luck and enjoy! We are in need of a get away soon! 15 years of marriage in September, I'd say it's a good reason to get away :)

Galena is beautiful and really perfect for a quick getaway. I would recommend the Irish Cottage Boutique Hotel. Rooms are lovely and they have an onsite spa which is wonderful. You might also want to look at Saugatuck or South Haven in Michigan. Both are a reasonable driving distance from the Chicagoland area and have excellent restaurants, wine tasting, small boutiques for shopping, etc. Good luck!

I have never been anywhere w/out my kids, but we went to Lake Geneva for a weekend last spring and it seemed like it would fit the bill. We also liked Door County, but that is a bit more of a hike.

Just having a hotel room and room service would do it for me.

I can't give you specific recommendations since I don't live in your area, but I would suggest searching tripadvisor. You can search reviews based on traveling as a couple.
Look at B & Bs. My hubby and I never thought that would be our kind of thing but we went to one a few years ago and it was AWESOME. Low key, relaxing and romantic, and NO kids, lol!
Have a great time :)
