Hello, My 3 year old son developed very swollen lymph nodes Wednesday on the side of his neck. The nodes on his right side are about 2"x2" BIG! Our Dr. put him on antibiotics and wants to see him if there is no improvement by next week. I think he is the same if not a little worse. His sinuses are congested and he snored all night and was restless. He told me his leg hurts this morning but I didn't see anything. Any thoughts about this would be helpful. I don't know if it has to do with allergies or an infection. Thanks for your thoughts!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded! Ben is doing much better. I did call the Dr. and spoke with them about it. The antibiotics must be working because it is so much better. It is definitely improving Thank God! I am still watching him like a hawk!
Thanks so much :)

lymph nodes that big... I would call the doctor again. If he has been on antibiotics for more than 2 days with no improvement, don't wait. Call the Doc. Especially if he has a fever.... but with kids that little, it can go from bad to disaster very quickly.

I recently had two hugely swollen lymph nodes, but no other symptoms. I called my sister who is a Physician's Assistant. She said that swollen lymph nodes ALWAYS means you are fighting an infection, but not to worry too much unless it lasts more than a week. It did last for almost a whole week, but then it went back to normal as fast as it came. The leg thing may be something entirely unrelated. You could call the DR just to help you feel better. I hope your son feels better soon!

Have you called the doctor back?

My children are experiencing allergy symptoms (runny nose) right now. I don't recognize the swollen lymph nodes (Maybe someone else has seen that in allergies?) & leg pain (this might be unrelated - growing pain?).

If you feel he's got an infection (is he feverish?), you might try this. It works for us.

When my children are sick, I give them tincture of echinacea root. I love it because it nourishes their bodies and encourages them to fight the infection.

From Susan Weed's book (herbalist) - It can clear up infections like blood poisoning, strep, staph infections and pneumonia. It's works as a preventative AND curative.
I use about 8 drops in water 2x/day for a week. Usually there is some change withing 48 hours.

You can get Echinacea from Chakra 4 Cafe over at the Town and Country shopping center on 20th Street and Camelback. I would talk to the owner, Kita, as well.

This is not intended to be a substitute for medical advice from your doctor. It's just what our family is comfortable using and has found to work in case of infection.

Hope he feels better!

M.

Go to or call the doc asap. This happened to my 3 yr old - he woke from a nap screaming and looking like he had the mumps. If he hasn't improved in 48 hours he needs to be seen. My son did respond to the antibiotics within 48 hours, but they still wanted to see him.

It can hinder his ability to breathe - my son was crying and actually passed out because he couldn't catch his breath. Scary. I don't know if the leg thing is related, but these infections can spread so fast. Have him seen; don't panic but don't wait. They may want to put him on a different heavy-duty antibiotic of even an IV one.

My thought is it's an infection of some sort. I dont think allergies would do that. Contribute to the sinus congestion, yes but the swelling and such, no. (we all deal with allergies here)

My son when he was 18 months old, woke up on morning with one side of his neck hugely swollen (from the shoulder to the ear) and the doctors didnt know what it was. Next day he was admitted to the hospital when it spread into a rash on his chest. (He also could/would not move his head, only turning his body to look around.) The hospital didnt know what it was either but my cousin who is a pediatric cardiologist recognized it via letters/pictures a month later as Kawasaki's Disease. I am not saying that is what it is but there is something going on with your son and you need to check it out. The doctors and hospital may not always know exactly what it is but don't just hope for it to go away.

Going to a good ENT is perhaps in order. I'd ask the doctor for a referral esp if his only course of action is to give him antibiotics and wait & see.

I would definitely call the doctor TODAY, you don't want to let this linger over the weekend and have an issue on Sat or worse Sunday. The antibiotic might not be strong enough, it could be a virus, and the doctor may have more/stronger options.

You might want to seek an alternative to traditional medicine. Homeopathic remedies work very well, as do herbs, to support the body in healing itself and then preventing it from "getting sick". The more often antibiotics are used, it will cause more problems in the long run by compromising the natural balance. I am a certified herbal consultant so if you want some specific suggestions about what formulas or herbs I would recommend for lymphatic flushing and support feel free to contact me or visit my website for more information: www.shootingstarherbs.amazonherb.net.

I would take him to a good chiropractor. One of my kids developed an ear infection at about that age and his lymph glands in his neck stayed swollen much longer than I felt was appropriate. I took him to Dr. Becky Kleckner and she adjusted his neck and while we sat there talking, the glands got smaller and smaller. By the next morning, if I pressed in I could feel them, but not see them. By the second morning, they were completely back to normal.

Hi R.,

I'm sorry to hear about your son's swollen lymph nodes. I know how it feels to have sick children and not know how to fix their problems.

There are a couple of things that could be causing his issues. Regardless of the cause, his immune system is obviously not functioning properly, or he wouldn't have gotten sick to begin with. There are many factors that can contribute to a suppressed immune system; but diet and in-home toxins are primary factors. Making sure he has a quality diet and minimize in-home toxins can help repair an unhealthy immune system.

Best wishes to you and your son. :)
