Good morning Moms, I need some suggestions please. We are moving from Broomfield to the downtown Denver area to be closer to my autistic son's school and of course the place we are getting is much smaller. We are renting a brand new 3 bedroom townhome with an unfinished basement. I have three kids left at home; 1 girl who is 13, 1 boy who is 16, and my 2 year old who is a boy. Neither my daughter or son want to share a room with the 2 year old which is understandable seeeing the age difference, however, there are only 3 rooms. I am a single parent so I am alone in my room. Should I take the master bedroom and kind of divide it in half and make a place for me on one side and my 2 year old(almost 3) on the other. Or should I buy some bund beds and try to convince my 16 year old son that its only for a year until we can find a place to buy? My 13 year old daughter is very insistent that she does not want my son in her room so I feel maybe trying my older son is better. The other option that I have is putting my older son in the unfinished basement. My concerns are that it is not finished and I do not know how to make it comfortable for him. Concrete floors and walls. We were going to use this space to play but I'm not sure it is good space to sleep. I was going to lay area rugs down there but I heard these can be expensive. Any suggestions/comments/ideas?

What can I do next?

I was in that situation as a teenager, but I wanted to share my room with my baby brother.

I recommend explaining to your son that he needs to share the room until a time when you can either finish the basement or get a bigger place. I would think your 2 year old would be better suited in a room with a big brother and not a sister or parent. Sometimes siblings have to make sacrifices.

Your oldest son could also finish the basement for himself if he prefers to have his own space. I do not know which son of yours is autistic, but if it is not your older son, then he should be able to do some work down there himself.

Hope that helps & good luck!

Have a GREAT day!

I would offer the master to whomever shares a room with the 2 year old.....And offer them the ability to have a cool teen hang out in the basement for phone time and friends.

Hang in there.

First of all, do not give up your space! You are working hard taking care of those kids and it is ok for you to have a nice space that is for you! You are the adult here, the older boy needs to share the room, like you said it is only for a year. He will live! He probably won't be around alot anyway, teens are usually pretty busy with school and activities. Maybe give him the option of setting up a "space" in the basement for himself where he can go hang out without the younger kids. You can get inexpensive rugs made at Lowe's/Home Depot, you can get regular carpet bound it is less than a traditional rug. Good luck!

I am about to face the same sort of situation. Trying to find a place to live and find a three bedroom to rent so we all can have our own rooms.
My thought is it is hard enough to be a 13 year old girl but they totally need their privacy, their own space. Though a 16 year old does too.
I am actually contemplating getting a sleeper sofa if all we can afford a 2 bedroom and give each of mine their own rooms and space and me sleep in the living room, seriously!
Kids in their teens need their own space and in your situation it has to have some compromise. Is it the 2 year old with autism? Would it be possible for you to let your 2 year old bunk with you so your teens can have their own space for now?
I wouldn't put anyone in the basement unless it was finished. Spiders, moisture or whatever can be a problem and I personally would be too worried.
As a mom I have learned I just need a bed to sleep in, basically a place to put my clothes for now. I figured if I got a two bedroom then I could sleep in with my daughter but let her decorate it and have her own space. I just need to sleep! :)
Hang in there, I wish you lot's of luck and how great of a mom you are!!
