My daughter and I are invited to a Quince Años celebration of a classmate for the first time. There will be a mass, then a dinner party. We plan to go to the mass but are not able to attend the party because we have to attend another family engagement that evening. I understand that the family spend a lot of money on this event and I would like to give an acceptable obsequio. Could anyone let me know what is considered an acceptable amount and what is a generous amount? Thank you so much!

What can I do next?

Married to a Mexican man for the past 10 years, have gone to about 20 quinceneros......
There is no "acceptable" amount!! You give what you can. You buy a pretty necklace, you give money, you give a gift certificate. It is a huge deal for HER, but it's really just a birthday party. It's like a sweet 16.
So, go to the mass, give her a sweet card about growing up, and pop a $20 in there if you don't want to buy a little gift.

Most people that are friends give $25 - $50. Family will give $100.

It really is a celebration for this young lady becoming a woman..The Mass is always touching. The Party is always a blast!

That's too bad you can't go to the party... All the ones I've been too have been fantastic! A nice card abut growing up, and some jewelry or a gift card is all you need. Whatever amount you'd give for a regular birthday party is good, or a little more if you can afford it.

If you aren't going to the reception, you don't need to consider the cost of the party and covering the plate. I would give $25-$50, like for a sweet 16.

Besides growing reasons (well explained by other posters), I would make sure she is ok emotionally too. Sometimes children overeat due to stress or anxiety. Just a thought.
