Grad Gift for Daughter's Boyfriend

My daughter and her boyfriend are both graduating this weekend. They have been dating each other for over a year, and I feel like i should give him some kind of graduation gift, but I have no idea what it should be. They have been kind of up and down lately so that makes it a little more difficult. I am wondering how personal the gift should be or if I should just give him cash. I am afraid if I give him money he will think he is just going to spend it going out with her anyway. I know he really loves MMA. He is going to work at a good railroad job post graduation and isn't planning on college right now. :(
Any ideas? I don't even know what is an appropriate amount to spend on this.

Hi Dawn! MMA Is Mixed Martial Arts. I think he does some of that tap out fighting and stuff. He was a state wrestler in high school.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I think I am going to go with the cash. I texted his mom and she said that's what he will need the most. I love the ideas for gas cards and everything. With so many of my daughter's friends graduating I have a few gifts to buy, so these ideas are really helpful!

Dawn, you are my graduation buddy. Many times when I think about graduation, I think about you and your son going through the same things. All of the joy, frustration, sadness, and pride. Thanks for supporting me and all of my parental emotions!

Everyone appreciates a gas card and they are always used. With my budget, I would need to go $25 on the amount .. $50 would be great if that is possible for you.

Cash or a gift card. Our daughter was given a ton and ALL of them really helped. Visa, cards, Best Buy, Apple, Target, Amazon.com, Barnes and Nobles....She was moving up north to attend school, so she also was given Lands End Gift cards. She was able to purchase a great coat and proper boots..

$50, tends t be the amount for a really good friend. $25 for a good friend

For family $100. to $50..

I would go with a Visa gift card so it can be used for anything he may want or need. Put it in a card and maybe a small keychain (or some other small gift).

Hi Christi, I would suggest a nice little get away for both of them to Discovery Cove where you can actually swim with the dolphins (not the ral Miami dolphins of course). They are very intelligent and love to interact with humans, or they can drift along the water way which seems like it's about a mile long and just relax floating on their back or sucking face and there are several life guards along the way to make sure everyone is safe, or they can swim with live tropical salt water fish and even swim and pet a live stingray and everything is all enclusive including meals, drinks, snacks, mask, snorkle, sunscreen, wetsuit vest, and you have a totally different clientelle and you get a free picture. Totally awesome relaxing graduation gift and very reasonable and you can even get a discount @ AAA. Enjoy.

I wouldn't get a gift, per se. I would just take them both out for a nice, sit down, dinner!

I like the gas card or gift card to a boot place. He will need both of these things for work.

I would go one of two ways
1. get him a $20 gift card to a food place near his railroad job - Subway, Papa John's Pizza.

2. Get him a $50 gift card to a boot place like Red Wing so he can buy work boots.

I had the same problem with DD's boy friend and ended up giving him cash. I have in the past given him gift cards to the camera store and the liquor store (he's over 21) for birthdays.
