Pre-memopause?

Hi Moms!
I hope any of you could help me. A couple of months ago I started to wake up in the middle of the night feeling very hot. At the beginning I would just uncover myself and then I would go back to sleep, but recently I realized that it's not my whole body that feels hot it's only my head. And not only I feel my head hot but it also sweats. I'm starting to think that this could be pre-menopause, but I haven't heard hot flashes on the head only. I'm 39 and although I don't find it impossible, I find it a little strange.
Have any of you experienced something like this?

What can I do next?

Are you on any medications? This has happened to me before. I sometimes need to go on Prednisone, a steroid, for asthma. It causes night sweats.

Hi Jessica,

Have you had your hormones checked? I say this because I am 37 and have been working on balancing out my hormones for the past year. I already have the task of trying to keep my thryoid balanced as I have hypothyroidism but then last year I started with the hot flashes, poor sleep, acne, etc and did a saliva hormone test and found that my progesterone was low and cortisol was all out of whack too. I have been on progesterone cream for the past 6 months and dr just added DHEA to it too. The progesterone really helped tremendously with the hot flashes and the sleep! Not sure if you have other symptoms but just a suggestion to get all that checked out to see if it is a hormone imbalance or true premenopause.

Good Luck!

It definitely can be early menopause symptoms (peri-menopause) but I would check with a doc. It could also be a symptom of any number of things having to do with the endocrine system and your hormones.

Welcome to menopause- normal start time 37-57, so you are right in there- get a copy of this month's Life Extension magazine- they have everything you need in the article about bio identical hormones. You will be so ahead of the game if you read this. It explains the old fashion replacement, and why it was awful, and it educates your so you can stand up to your MD if necessary.
Knowledge is so important.
best, k

Oh Mother Nature...must you vex us so???? Could be pre- menopausal symptoms(I had something very similar post-partum for about 3-4 weeks, as my body was flushing out extra hormones after birth-not fun!) BUT could just be your hormones going a little cuckoo from whatever reason...stress, other hormones out of whack.
If you pursue getting this checked out by your ob/gyn...and I would recommend have them at least check you out for all possibilities...the most accurate hormone test is a saliva test since the range of "normal" for the typical blood test is soooo broad(and of course not all ob/gyn's do this test so you'll need to call around to find someone who does)If you are not on any kind of hormone therapy now(birth control pills/patch/mirena iud included) you could look into taking a supplement called Royal Maca that is a hormone adaptogen...it helps your body reboot/balance your hormones. It is a peruvian ginseng, not any kind of hormone itself. The best place to research, read up on this and of course order the organic supplement is on a website I frequently refer my acne clients to(who experience hormone related acne breakouts)Wholeworldbotanicals.com. There are a lot of "alternative" therapies out there to help balance hormones without resorting to tradtional HRT...... Good luck!! L.

could be....but I would mention it to your doctor to rule out something more serious and/or treatable, for example a thyroid condition....

My hot flashes vary, I have had just upper body and the entire. During the day I have definitely noticed that my head seems to be the main area. Have you actually been diagnosed as being pre-menopausal? If not have your doctor run tests. I started having hot flashes 11 years ago when I was pregnant with my youngest child and I was diagnosed with Graves disease (thyroid disorder) and the thyroid does control the body temp as well as many other things. So talk to a doctor to rule out everything, b/c even though it's uncommon to start menopause at your age it does happen, but you want to be certain it's not something else.
Have a blessed day and best of luck.

Go to Doctor and dicuss about that. it might seem be diabetic or thyroid, other health issues. Dr possible send you for blood and gloucose tests. Dr. can answer and tell you after blood results. 39 may too young for pre-menopause. I woke up during night same thing but not sweating just feel hot and so thirty, I drink during middle of nights then I discussed with my dr about it. he sent me to blood and gloucose test. result went out that I have type 2 diabetic. I am 41. there are many various in each different indivdiual. I was told that 40's have many health issues very common like diabetic, thyriods, and hormones changes. pre-menopause (usually around 50's unless it happen eariler)

For starters, I would say to contact your doctor to determine what it could be. I'm 38 and have had hot flashes for the past year - initially from chemo (for breast cancer), which sends many women, temporarily or sometimes permanently, into menopause (they call it "chemopause") but now from real monopause. I had my ovaries and tubes removed three weeks ago because I have the BRCA2 gene mutation which puts me at high risk for developing ovarian cancer, which is a "silent killer."

Okay, that said, when I get a hot flash, I absolutely feel it in my head - I get almost a tingling sensation right before the sweating starts, then I feel hot all over, but it is mostly my head - wierd. I know this probably doesn't help you much, but thought I'd put my two cents in! Good luck; I hope you figure out what is causing your night sweats.

Hi Jessica - There is this evil condition called perio-menopause, we don't hear as much about it as I think we should. I have had it for over 9 years. It makes my life h-ll. I am 47 and I still have it. It has all the same symptoms of menopause without actually being "in menopause".
My sweats are not only just at night but any time of the day and especially when it rains - I know that sounds crazy - but it is true. Of course living in the south does not help either with the humidity. I have cut my hair really short because I could not stand the sweaty hair touching me. I have even used clinical strength anti persparent on my most sweaty areas - that works some.
My periods have been irregular for a very long time so that was no indicator. I have recently had my DR changed (by them) not by me and I did mention it to him and he said that there are meds that may help, not HRT either.

I sleep in tank tops, can't stand anything near my neck, I have 2 fans blowing on me at all times, oh and by the way did I mention I am single - LOL!!!!

Check with your DR, they can do blood work and tell you if you are in perio-menopause or starting the actual menopause.
I feel your pain sister.

Oh definitely I have. This is how it started for me at 35ish or so and I still get it off and on now that I'm 47. I was shocked when my Gyn said I was already pre-menopause at 35 but I definitely was.

The next weird thing was the confusion of having the full hot flashes AND multiple periods a month as well as zits AND a whisker under my chin. I mean c'mon --- lol --- but you gotta roll with it.

Hang in there. Some find that progesterone cream helps a ton. I'm on a yahoo group with some ladies in the same boat. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hormoneHealthNW/ might be worth checking out.

Hang in there!

I'm not sure. I am 40 and recently had my yearly check up. I was told that pre-menopause could actually last several years. I good indicator is what age your mother was when she went through it. Also, the very first sign of menopause is vaginal dryness so if you are not experiencing any of that, I would not think this is related. I think you should be able to call into your ob/gyn's nurse and she could answer without actually having to make an appointment. Would be interesting what they say....
