Can anyone recommend a pediatric dentist in/near the Columbia, MD area for my kids ages 3 through 8? In particular, one of my 4 sucks his thumb... so I'd love to hear of any good thumb-sucking vs. dentist stories. And, like some kids... I've got one who is always less than excited about going(as in screaming in the chair)... Thanks!

What can I do next?

Jules,
I have a great pediatric dentist in Ellicott City MD.
He also sees adults and does orthodontics. He also happens to have a wholistic practic. He uses 2 kinds of lasers that eliminate pain with cavities.
His name is Dr. Eugene Sambatero. He is on Dorsey Hall Rd.
###-###-####. I know there is a 410 #; but the 301 is in my book.
His hygenist is great. They have movies for kids to watch while in the rooms. They have a game systems and toys as well.
Hope this helps.
L.

On an emergency visit, we saw Dr. Simon in Ellicott City. Her office is right across the street from the old Enchanter Forest on Rte 40. She was wonderful and I was very impressed with the office in general.

I can give you 2 suggestions. My kids go to Dr Rita Simon who is with Ginsberg and Associates on route 40 in Ellicott City. They are set up really well for kids--a playhouse and video games in the lobby; movies on for distraction while they are being worked on. There are a lot of technicians around to help out and they all seem to interact very well with kids. I like them too because they have Saturday hours. Another dentist who I've heard is very good with kids is Casey Crofton. This one is located in Columbia.

I would reccommend Dr. Biederman. The phone number is ###-###-####. The pratice is run by a father and son. They are wonderful! I went to the father when I was a kid and now my children go to his son. They are really great with kids they don't force them to do anything they don't want to. They have this way of making everything really fun that makes the kids want to do everything. Good luck!

This practice is fantastic, but they don't take insurance. They will file for you, but what little payment insurance gives is to you. craftondental.com

Another is right near the hospital. Dr. Etessami, at http://www.bethesdadentalspecialties.com/ (but have an office in Columbia) but they just sold to Dr. Zaggi. He is also very good with kids.

My daughter also has big issues and once had to be at the hospital for some procedures. But they recently have been getting her to relax.

Good luck. It is so hard to have a screaming child when they are just getting their teeth tickled!

I agree with Karin W! I went to Dr. Biederman as a child (i'm 35yo) and now that I have new a insurance plan, I will be switching my daughters to his practice as well. GREAT atmosphere, they allow the children to explore the office and become familiar and comfortable with his/her surroundings before each dental visit. I hope you'll give the practice a try.

I absolutely adore my dentist, Dr. Stephen Kleiman, ###-###-####, he's in the Medical Arts building right next to Laurel Hospital (about 20 minutes from Columbia).

I had bad experiences as a kid, so I avoided dentists for years. I was getting hot/cold pains, so I picked this one and went to see him. He is amazing. I had root canals and tons of cavities filled. It wasn't fun, but the pain was so small for such serious work! I took some advil and was fine. My husband is also fearful and had some equally serious work done with little pain.

My stepdaughter's mother had a chipped tooth pulled when she was 2, so she was terrified to go to a dentist. But Dr. Kleiman and his staff reassured her and now she has no problem. He was patient and explained some concerns about her teeth with me, but didn't want to rush into having unecessary work done. He's good about going over every option and leaving it up to the parent (or adult patient). I can't rave about him enough. He participates with a few insurance plans.
