I put in this request a couple days ago....

My two and a half year old daughter has been having diarhea about 2-3 times a day for about a week now. She really hasn't had one normall poop since then. I have a doctor's appt tomorrow morning but would love some feedback from all teh mom's out there on what could be causing this, info to go to the doc's with ya know. Her diet has not changed, she does not like fruit juices so she doesn't drink them(all she really drinks is milk and water), She eats bananas, cheerios, rice and many other foods that would typically harden the poop up regularly. I really do not think it is what she is eating, any opinions??

*No other symptoms besides the stomach pain that goes with diarhea, her appetite is fine, she is active, no fever or any other sickness.

SO WE'RE BACK FROM THE DOCTORS:

The doctor said, maybe it's because you're pushing too hard with teh potty(trust me, I am not!), or it could be a bug, or she could get her molars in soon. So she knew nothing. What upset me is she said they would not do any tests until she has had diarhea for about a month!!! I can't let my baby girl have diarhea for a month....it's already been a week and we are both sick of it. My question, how long can this go on for? Should I belooking for a new doctor? I have always loved her in teh past but saying a two year old can have diarhea for a month kinda scares me.

What can I do next?

You could try the BRAT diet for a few days, and see if it helps. Give her nothing but banannas, rice, applesauce, and toast, with only water to drink. Make sure the rice is unflavored, perferably brown or basmati, make sure the applesauce is unsweetened, and the toast is whole grain and toasted DARK. My kids liked the applesauce ON the toast, rather than dry toast. This helps tummies recover. The banannas have potassium to recover electrolytes, the rice firms up stools, the applesauce gives pectin, again to firm up, and the dark toast charcoal, to absorb. Worth a try? Good luck!

Try not to worry too much. I know it's hard but although the dr. whom you have trusted in the past isn't worried, then try to take a deep breath and relax. You daughter is healthy otherwise and that is a good sign. Yes sometimes bugs do get into our systems that present themselves as only diarrhea. If it is a bug it will run its course. Try giving her some yogurt with the active live cultures and limit the milk which can aggravate the problem. Instead keep up the water intake and try apple juice too.

If you have that gut feeling that something is really wrong with your child than I agree you need to see another dr. Perhaps another dr. in the practice or in an urgent care place.

Check your drug store for chewable acidophilous. I give my kids the strawberry flavored kind and they really like it (even my pain in the neck 2 year old).

It will be ok. These things do happen. i have been through it. Just take comfort in knowing that if anything serious was wrong your daughter would be presenting other symptoms. Good luck to you Monica. I hope this all goes away soon. Please keep us posted.

i would keep her on a really blan diet for a couple of days and see if that helps any. She will not be able to get the best nutrition but maybe it will get her digestive track working properly again. Going to the bathroom that often doesn't sound normal to me. And a month of the runs is definitely NOT normal. good luck

Hi Monica
It seems there's a difference between "loose stools" and "diarrhea". If she seems like she's in pain, that's a different story. But just having loose stool (which is what you had originally called it) seems it could be a passing thing that she could have for a ton of reasons. I'm saying this not from my own experience with a child (my daughter is only a couple of months) but more from just an outsider's point of view. If you've had a longstanding relationship with the doctor, and she seems reasonable, then there's no reason why you should stop trusting her now. I'm sure she has seen this many times in her practice, and so she probably knows it can be a result of several different things. The most important thing to keep in mind is if your daughter is hydrated enough, which you will only know by how many #1s she is doing.
Take care

You have trusted this Dr. in the past. So trust her now. But try to do some things to help out. Give her drinks with electrolytes, In place of water. (to help with dehydration) also think about the amount of fiber in her food.

Maybe try a diet of starchy foods that will help "bind her up" a little. Rice, bread, crackers, hard cheese, things like that. I know when our dog had diarrhea the vet told us to feed him hamburg and rice - so hey - worth a shot, right?

On a positive note - if she's acting normal - it can't be bothering her too much so keep you chin up!

Monica,
If I were you I would call another local pediatrician in your area and get a secone oppinion. Or, maybe call your doctor and request that a stool sample be done. It wont hurt to get the test done. If that comes back negative then maybe you will be a little more at ease. Good Luck!
