Toddler with Case of Diarreah

I have a 15 month old son that has yet to be sick. He has had 3 runny noses, but it was during a tooth popping through. We've been very fortunate! He has another tooth popping through and again, has a runny nose. But this time he has diarreah with it. He had 7 poopy diapers today, and he usually only has one. They were pretty loose and smelled like rotten eggs. Is this normal for teething, or could he be catching a bug? My main question is what can I do to help him? I've given him a banana with every meal (bananas always help me). I know not to give him sugars/juices-which I don't give him anyway. I've been encouraging him to drink more water...which is pretty easy cause he loves water. I just feel so bad for him. What natural (not medicine) things can I do to help him? Thanks for your suggestions!

What can I do next?

I would suggest not giving any fruit at all. I have a 2 yr old that can't eat fruit, even just a little without getting diarrhea. And it sounds like you're doing great. if it lasts for 3 days, though, you should take him to the doctor, because he can get dehydrated.

Along with the bananas you should just give him the BRAT diet whichs is bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. It should help solidify things.

My Dr always told us what he called the "BRAT" diet.....Bananas, Rice (including rice cereal), Applesauce and Toast!

Yes having diarrhea with teething is common, however I would not let it go on too long as he will get dehydrated. How about some Pedialyte they have liquid or they also have popsicles. As long as he is still having freuent wet diapers all is well!

well, for starters i wouldn't give water, i'd give pedialyte or gatorade to keep his electrolytes up. with it smelling like that it could definitely be a stomach bug, so good handwashing is a must. i would put some sort of barrier cream on after every diaper change. give lots of yogurt, bananas, and a BRAT diet....bananas rice applesauce toast. no juice or sugary stuff, like you said. no lactose. good luck! love, a peds nurse

Our doctor used to say to give them rice water. You cook the rice partially and drain off the water. Cool it and give it to the baby. He also said applesauce and weak tea. If your baby takes water well, the rice water and/or weak tea might help.

Hi A.,
Yes, teething can cause diarrhea. The best thing to do with anyone (regardless of age) when this happens is the BRATT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, tea and toast (no butter). Since your little guy is younger you can use rice cereal, maybe mixed with applesauce and give him some zwiebeck toast to munch on. If you do give him any tea just make sure it's weak tea with no sugar. I'm sure slightly warm tea would probably feel good on his tummy.

Hang in there - I know how bad those diapers can be! Just remember it's only temporary!

When my nephew had the Roto Virus a couple of years ago, his doctor recommend giving him watered down Kool-aide instead of Gatoraid or Pedialyte. Kool-aide is MUCH cheeper and the doc said it has basically all of the same things in it and when they are sick, they can use the extra calories. We have done this ever since when are little ones have issues and it clears them up every time. Don't worry, he won't get hooked on the Kool-aide if he only gets it occationally.

A. - I went through this with my son when he was teething - we gave him water to stay hydrated, but he also needs to have nutrition that will help "bind" him up so the stools are not so runny - bananas are good, toast, rice...just don't over do it all because you don't want to go in the opposite direction. We also put rubber pants over the diaper to help prevent accidents into the clothes or on floors and funiture. All you can do is just keep a close eye on him, and hope for it to be over soon - we went through this mostly when he was getting his molars, but every child is different. Good Luck.

A., Some people recommend the BRAT diet. Bread, Rice, Apple, Toast. Now personally I think the apple could cause problems but try the rest and see what happens.

i'm a mom with a toddler who can't have juice at all, and very limited fruits. we had a bout of exactly what you're describing, and all the advice on here is great. i wanted to add a couple of things, first being that that many poopies in a day REALLY tore up my son's bottom. we ended up using a removable shower head, and just rinsing him down instead of using the wipes, which hurt and made the rash worse. HUGE pain but we just didn't have any other choice. i also started using desitin followed by cornstarch baby powder on his bum and that helped. it's going to be really important to watch his bottom right now, so i hope that helps. my son has sensitive skin too, so i just felt awful for him. hope it gets better soon.

Our Ped. always puts our daughter on the BRAT diet- Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast, which clears her up. She doesnt do rice cereal so he said it's ok to substitute plain yogurt, which she loves. Good luck!

Stop giving him the regular water because it's just going through him...give him either Gatorade, Pedolyte, or Smart Water (it's water with electrolytes in it like Gatorade & Pedolyte but no flavor). Sounds to me like he as a stomach virus that will just have to run it's course...usually this will go on for 1-3 days...if he's still having problems at the end of the weekend I'd get him into the Dr. on Monday.

Headaches, stomach/intestinal problems, rashes are always hard to figure out, even for the health care professionals, which I am NOT. The advice I was given for my children and has often worked for me as well is the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. you can mix the rice with bananas or applesauce, put them on the toast, or keep them separate. Stick with water to drink ( or maybe a very diluted herbal tea- camomile tea is good for tummies) It may take a couple of days to work, but it should.

My son had extreme diarhea diapers while getting 4 teeth in at the same time. poopy diapers during teething is normal. I would give my son a mixture of half pedialyte/half room temp water. pedialyte is really sugary so i watered it down for him. He needs to replenish his liquids so the pedialyte is a necessity. The only other thing is to just let is run its course and it should subside when the tooth is through. But, if the diarhea is accompanied by fever or other symptoms, i would make an appt w/ his pediatrician. Good luck!-L.

I have been using baby acidophilus (spelling) since I learned about it several years ago. I've used it on all three of my children and even our pets over the years. It works like a dream and is completely natural! You get it from the health food store in the refrigerated section and is a white powder. It is the good bacteria in the intestines, I believe. I just put a little in their milk or juice and it takes care of the diahrea quickly. I found out about it when my 10-year-old was 17 months and had suffered from diahrea for 12 days and was losing weight from a virus. It is an amazing and natural cure.

A.,

I have worked in the medical field for most of my life and I have to tell you, you are doing great. It is very common to get diarrhea with teething. The bananas are great for binding and keeping his potassium up. I agree with no sugary drinks because it can add to diarrhea. The water for hydrating is fine and so is his normal drinks, just increase frequency because he is loosing fluids. If the exudate or snot is clear, he probably does not have a virus or bacterial infection. If the snot is green, most likely bacterial infection, if it is yellow, most likely viral, if brown, blood is mixed in the snot, and keep an eye on the color and moisturize the nose with vaseline or normal saline rinses. I hope this helps. There are many other symptoms to accompany rotavirus, since you didn't give any of the other symptoms, it doesn't sound like rotavirus, so don't panic. Tylenol is the most common and safest drug out there for infants/toddlers, unless he has an allergy. I wouldn't worry about giving him any other medications, because once the tooth comes through, most of the snot and diarrhea should dissipate. I hope this helps. Just give him extra TLC, and the BRATT diet is helpful, B=bananas, R=rice, A=apples/applesauce, T=tea (not necessary for kids, mostly helps with sore throat), and T=toast, but most breads and grains are good too to firm up your stool.

I had the same problem with my little ones. My ped. said to give them Curturelle wich you can get from the pharmacy. It's behind the counter so ask the pharmacist. You can put it in anything he eats. It seemed to really help my daughter.

Try giving him a probiotic. I just break open the capsule and put it in some applesauce. You could even put it in his milk or water.

Whenever my kiddos had diarhea we would give them starchy foods, like mashed potatoes (with butter for flavor) and mac and cheese, or plain speghetti noodles (just fun to eat plain). That was things the doctor recommended we give them to help. It is starchy so it will help to solidify the poop more. Good luck and God Bless.
P.S. A lot of fruits have fiber in them (like apples) and you don't want to give him fiber when he has the runs, it'll just make it worse. Do give him lots of liquids so he doesn't dehydrate though.

A.-- sounds to me like your son has rotavirus. this is a virus that will take about 7 days to pass. i have 4 boys ages 10 yrs to 10 months, and all but the baby has had this. because it is a virus, doctors can't give a med for it. when i took mine, they said to make sure he drinks clear fluids, not water, but things like ginger ale, some sprite things of that nature, and feed him things like toast, rice, oatmeal, things easy on the little guys tummy. hope this helps! good luck.

It's not unusual to have several poopie diapers even the ones that smell bad and are really runny,if it was diarreah they will be one right after the other and also kidda like water. During a teething period including no need to eat fussy and running a temp. runny nose What you can do for now is offer him several drinks during a day if he's fussy soothe him offer wet wash cloths that have been put in the frezzer for a while and let him chew if he doesn't like the coldness then give it to him without water

Runny noses give my son diahrea(sp?). It seems like it backs up into his tummy and then the aweful diapers come. It is the cycle for teething in our house - cranky, then runny nose, then icky diapers. Once it even turned into an ear infection as it backed into his sinuses. That said, my little guy never has 7 in one day! I think you might have a virus or something. That said, BRAT always works for us. It is Bananas, Rice, Apple Sauce and Toast. To get the rice in for my daughter we once had to soak rice in water and give her the water (she was on formula though so we mixed her formula with it in the bottle and she didn't notice - good eater). That BRAT has worked for us a million times over. Then, you can also get Dannon yogurt. It has the cultures in it to help the bacteria in the stomach. That is also very helpful. So, BRAT and Yogurt. Also, you need to watch for dehydration - dry tears or no pink if push on the skin. then he should for sure see the doc. :) Hope he recovers soon!

the BRAT diet is good for diarreah and also puking. BRAT is for bananas, rice, apples, and toast. You are doing well with the bananas and making sure he drinks plenty of water. sometimes this could be from teething but may have also caught a virus. If he has it for more than 24 hours I would take him to the doctor.
