My hosue has been passing around the dreaded stomach flu bug!! I have been having my 18 month old drinking pedialyte (sp?) He hasn't thrown up at all today, but still has diarreah. My question is should I still continue with just the pedialyte? and for how long after all symptoms have subsided? Thanks in advance!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, my son started vomiting again last night so I called his Dr. she said that it's common with this certain virus that is going around. She said people have started to feel better for 2 days, and then felt sick again :( She also told me to continue the pedialyte, and not to try and stop the diarreah. She said that is the way that the body has been trying to get rid of the sickness. She said I could use the BRAT diet, but not to force him to eat. Also that the diarreah can last anywhere from 4 days to 2 weeks. Thank You all for your help.

I just got back from the Hospital with this and they informed me that Pedialyte is the same as what is in the IV bag and you should continue giving only it or Gatorade until the dirreah and any vomiting is completely gone ABSOLUTELY NO WATER(it causes bad dehydration and can if given too much cause even worse problems). Hope this helps!

The pedialyte is fine and you should be able to start giving him applesauce as well. The applesauce will help stop the diarehha as well. This particular virus could last 3 weeks

Yes, comtinue to give Pedialyte for as long asyour child has diarhea. Give some after each bowel movement. I buy the popsicle variety pack. You can serve them frozen as a popsicle or room temp/cool as a drink. The variety pack allows your child to choose a new color every time so they don't sick of it. believe me, at some point they will reject it if it's the same old thing all day long. i have even mixed them with water (just like watered down juice). The pediatician told me that was still ok. Continue to offer until the stools become more formed. encourage clear liquids throughout the day (chicken broth, water, juice, etc). also, encourage the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Apples, Toast). Do NOT give apple juice, only apple slices or apple sauce. Apple juice will give your child more diarhea. But the pulp of the apple founce in the sauce and slices helps to bind the bowels, which is what you want. Stay away from dairy until your child has lost the queasiness and stools are more normal.

My grandson had the same. The vomiting stopped but the diarreah continued. I want to warn you that until the diarreah stops he can pass his bug to others. Landon came to visit two days after the vomiting stopped and although he was a happy cuddly 9 month old everyone he came in contact with caught his bug. I think it was that cuddly part.

Check with your doctor first, but the BRAT diet works well with diarreah. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. I've used it several times with my children and it always seems to help. And, mostly importantly keep him hydrated!! Good luck!

Hi, The flu is really bad and I would like to tell you that when the flu or colds are in your house if you have a potpourri burner put some peppermint oil and clove buds or powder in it and let it simmer all day for a few days. The peppermint will open the breathing passages and the clove kills the germs in the house. It helps to stop going through the whole family. The diaherra is good to an extent because the body is flushing out toxins that aren't suppose to be in it. Use some vaseline for comfort. R. L.

If you child has not thrown up, you can go ahead and try a light/bland diet such as some toast or maybe some bananas. There is a lot of GI stuff going around. The most important is to make sure your child stays hydrated - still urinating, making tears, etc.

Yuck! I have been where you are. My son had diarrhea with it too. Keep giving him the Pedialyte as long as he's keeping it down, but also give him yogurt for the diarrhea. It has to be REAL yogurt. Most of the kids yogurts out there are full of sugar and junk. My pediatrician recommended plain yogurt, but if your son won't eat plain, then I recommend Stonyfield Farms Organics yogurt in Banilla. It's a banana/vanilla and my kids love it. There's nothing artificial in it. I have to get it at Sawall's Natural Food Market in Kalamazoo, but if you're not near Kalamazoo, then any natural foods market near you should carry it. If you aren't familiar with Stonyfield Farms, go to www.stonyfield.com and check it out. We've been using this brand exclusively for almost 4 years. Good luck and I hope that everyone gets better soon. Stay away from any other dairy, like milk. It will make the diarrhea worse.

Pedialyte can not hurt your son. I would keep giving it to him as long as there is sickness in the house and then a month or so after for good measure. If he likes it, use it as it is something good for him. :)

Good luck on getting everyone healthy again!

Yes keep giving him the Pedialyte but you can also make him some jello water and give him melted popsicles in his bottle, it always worked for my kids. It will keep them hybrated since the 18mo old still has diarreah. Keep giving him the pedialyte until the diarreah stops, you have to build up his electrolytes again after the flu.

I would continue with the pedialyte if he is still having diarrhea. We just went through this with my son and he did great with the BRAT diet (banannas, rice, applesauce and toast). We had to keep him on this for 4 days, he had it bad! I would also limit regular milk during this time, whenever my son is sick we switch to rice milk.

Hello D.,

I used Vitamite Milk (located in the milk section at Meijers). It stops the diarrhea pretty good. It is lactose free milk and it works!! Continue with the electrolytes like the pedialytes. Things to look for in case of dehydration...their bellies will be doughy...like working with bread dough. And when you pinch it it keeps its pinching shape for a bit. Eyes will look sunken in...and dark. If she is throwing up bright green...that is coming from the liver...Any of these...You will probably want to get her in immediately. Best wishes...hang in there. Start fumigating everything and open windows to get the bug out.

Try the BRAT diet with him. Bannanas, rice, applesauce, and toast (for adults it is BRATT and you add tea). My daughter had the stomach flu in October and the ped said that if they get too much electrolytes it can cause diarrhea.

I am really concerned that someone suggested Pepto Bismal. This has aspirin in it and is a big no no for kids....Reyes syndrome

I only found this out recently while I was pregnant and thought I found a solution for heart burn. Boy, did my dr ever lecture me!!

The flu is the pits!!!
If the throwing up pretty much stops in 12 - 15 hours, most likely it's food related. Docs will tell you that throwing up doesn't accompany the flu, although general stomach upset can.

The most helpful thing I learned was from a pharmacist - nothing but ice chips until throwing up ceases (about 8 hours) then nothing but clear liquids in small frequent amounts for the next 12 - 24. This can include ginger ale (a natural stomach settler) or 7 up (sugar is a stomach settler also), jello, popsicles, apple juice (no orange), pedialyte, etc. Then follow the BRAT diet until all diarreah stops - Bananas, Rice (white), Applesauce, Toast (white, no butter, little jam okay.) These are things easy on the intestines to allow them to heal. Diarreah is just throwing up from the other end! Treat it pretty much the same. My prayers are with you today!!!

We had that dratted stomach flu going around my house, too.

Keep him on pedialyte, and then gradually introduce light foods, no milk. My doctor said 'BRAT', which means, banana, rice, applesauce and toast. Gradually introduce these four, then start slowly introducing other foods. Save the milk for last, since it's very hard to digest.

Your stomach has to recuperate, too, and you don't want to make it work too hard.

I am so sorry about the illness. It is ROUGH. My son had it when he was only 7 months old. Boy was it a tough time for us. I was waking up every hour giving him one teaspoon of squash and a few swigs of pedialite. Stick with the pedialite until all vomitting and diarrhea have subsided. If you go back to formula (for little ones) or food the badness will return. Just stick it out! When I tried to go back to formula with my son it was vomitting all over again and the diarrhea.

Hello. Sorry to hear about your family having the flu! We went through that a few months back when I was only 5 weeks pregnant, ugh. My peditrician suggested Pedilite also but I was also told that as long as they aren't vomitting anymore to try to limit the pedilite because the sugar in it can actually cause the diahrea to not solidify. But of course it is important to make sure they are staying hydrated.
Hope you all feel better soon :-)

We just delt with this ourselves. As long as he isn't dehydrated he shouldn't need the pedialyte anymore. The diarreah can last several days after. so as long as he's eating and drinking the worst part is over.

If he has been on it longer than a week and he is still having trouble, I would suggest you check with the doctor, there might be something else he would like to have him take and clear this all up-----J.

Just remember to keep the baby hydrated. Having the runs and throwing up will dehydrate you. I know; I almost died myself as a baby from flu dehydration.
Try blueberry puree to help with the runs, tho. If I remember when my kids were tots, I think that's one thing that helped.
Also, for any adults, ginger is an excellent stomach calmer. That's why Vernor's ginger ale is so good. Mint settles the stomach as well. so if you can find some gingermint tea, get it.
Organics are always best, D.. And cow's milk is just not the best to ingest at any age.
