Molluscum

My 9 month old seems to have molluscum contagiosum on his face. I know it generally just runs its course, but since it is on his face, I really want to know if there is anything we can do about it. I'm not keen on trying to cut or freeze it off, since this can be painful and potentially leave scars (once again, face).

What can I do next?

Web sites I looked up.
https://ssl.search.live.com/health/article.aspx?id=articl...

A government one with a lot of info is:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/molluscum/faq/everyone.htm

There is a lot of other web information just by looking up the name. I believe the immune system needs to be bolstered to help get rid of them. Small pox vacination should do it if baby hasn't had one.

I found what works!!!!!!!!!!! My four year old daughter had this on and off for over a year. Recently it went from several bumps to ###-###-####! I was panicked. I researched lots, tried different things but here was the answer that worked fast, was not painful and was relatively inexpensive. I had her take a long bath, (over an hour), in warm water that I added about 1/2 cup salt and a bottle or two of apple cider vinegar. I did this every day for about a week and the Molluscum is totally gone!!!!!!!!!!!! The warm water opens the pours, the salt apparently draws out the virus and the vinegar kills it. That is it!
The first time she took a bath in the salt and vinegar you could see the bumps reacting and changing over the duration of the hour. Some of the bigger ones turned red and came to a head and you could see the white center coming to the surface.
It was so great to see something finally working!!!!!!
My daughter only complained about the vinegar smell but was never in any pain and was thrilled to be able to play in the bath so long. After each bath I washed down the tub and her toys with bleach so any virus left on them wouldn't re-infect her.
When I saw how well it was working I continued to give her at least one bath a day. Each bath was at least an hour. After a week we were done!!! The bumps were gone!!!!!! Sometimes when the water was getting cool I would epmty part of it, and then add hot water and more salt and vinegar. I would keep pouring the water over her shoulders and chest where it was not submergeed in the water. Also of course keep it out of the childs eyes or it will sting. (Have a clean damp washcloth ready).
Honestly the hour went fast. I sat next to the tub, glancing at a magazine while I poured the water over my daughers shoulders and back. She was thrilled to play with her favorite toys in the water for so long.
The solution is so simple, painless and natural, why don't the dermatologists recommend this??? Having to suffer over a year as we did is awful! We tried the dkin treatments, the ointments etc. nothing really worked, plus some of it was painful and expensive.
Anyone with a child who has Molluscum please try this!!!! So effective, simple, natural, painless, quick, and inexpensive. Why isn't this common knowledge???
Hopefully this helps a lot of you as it did for us.
Good luck! :-)

Hi A.,

I both my older daughters had Molluscom. My 10 yr old had it on her inner thighs (just about the worst place to get it), so it would never go away...It would rub her pants, erupt and spread. My Dr. kept telling me it would run it's course, but after 2.5 years i'd had it. (I know 2.5 years seems like a long time, but the dr. kept telling me the only solutions were painful and I didn't want to put her through that.) So anyhow, we changed dr's.....and the new Dr. gave us acne cream RETIN A...and it worked!! it is so safe and sensative, it was the only RX cream my DR gave me when i was pregnant to treat my acne.

Also as far as scarring goes, the scars are extremly small, and as the child grows the scar stretches out and disapprears.

My 9 year old had it on her face, the acne cream cleared it up without any scarring. However my 10 year old who had it on her leg did get scars...(not from the cream, but the bubbles can get infected and HAVE to be popped, like a pimple, its gross), but the scars are gone now because she has grown.

I know another mama source Mama said this, and I stress what she said, this can take years and years to run it's course and it can still scar without treatment.

A friend of mine's daughter had it on her face and she popped the bubbles, and then put bandaids on them to keep from spreading...she has no scars. However, it's easier to pop and bandaid older kids...nine month old, not so much.

And yet again, ANOTHER friend of mine, her daughter had it on the sides of her stomach, then her inner arms, (from walking her arms would rub against the side of her belly and it spread)...she treated with the burning off...her daughter was 4 when she did it, and she said it didn't hurt at all...again, 4 years old, not nine months.

I am giving you all these different situations to show you how extremely contagious it is...we don't know what kid started it, but both my older daughters got it, and three of my friends kids. My 10 year old refused to wear shorts out in public becasue she was so self consious of it. If you don't treat it, it will speard ALL OVER YOUR SON. If a child bathes with another child with it, they can get it...it's a virus like a cold..

When treating, you need to wash the linnens your child sleep on, because it can get on the linnens and spread when he lays back down. I know it sounds extreme, but i was told to treat it like lice, wash everything often until it's gone.

I would insist your doctor treat this virus, as mine refused to, we switched doctors. it was cleared up in three months after we got the cream. if switching dr's isn't something you want to do, you have every right to get a second opinion...I would definatly look into that.

Hope this helps....sorry for writing such a book..but this thing put my daughters through H*ll for two years and I would hate to have it happen to someone else, especially a nine month old baby....I made the mistake of listening to my kids' dr and not treating for 2.5 years...there are safe, painless treatments...it may take a few of them to get the right one for your son, but don't leave it untreated!!

My daughter had mollusum when she was small and they kept applying stuff to burn it off which cuased horrible blistering. One day our regular dermatologist was on vacation and the sub prescribed the generic for Tagamet (yes, that is for heartburn). The molluscum began to clear quickly. The regular dermatologist said it was his treatment, not the Tagamet, though. The thing is, that it can't hurt to try.

You might try castor oil with a little oil of oregano. Castor oil when applied 3-4 times a day for a period of a week or so is effective in removing some skin growths such as moles and skin tags. Oil of oregano is a natural anti-bacterial that will prevent bacterial growth and slow the spreading of molluscum contagiosum.

Note: contagiosum refers to the contagious nature of this viral mole, so they can spread from the original site and can even spread person-to-person. Do not share washrags, towels, etc., and always wash hands thoroughly in antibacterial product to prevent spreading.

Good luck!

Dont freeze it off, sometimes that doesnt even work. My son who is 21 months had them on his back and rear and my mother who is a pediatrician, cut them off using a scalple and used some cream to numb before getting them off. He did not feel any pain and did not cry. Only one has come back and the others are all gone. He looks and Im sure feels much better. I felt the need to get them off becuase they grew bigger and looked gross. Hope this helps.

Dear A.,
My daughter has that also on the back of her legs, I have had no luck yet. Although on March 23 and 26, molluscum was discussed in these forums. Go to Request and Responses, and then Heatlh and Medical, and then click on "other health and medical". Then keep on clicking next till you get back to March. There are some suggestions there. Wish I could help more. Good Luck.

Try Retin A for acne. My friends daughter has it and used it and it shrunk them way down. Make sure you keep your child out of the sun if you choose to use it. It makes the skin very sensitive to the sun.

I have info to share to enable you to help strengthen his immune system to be able to resist this and many other health conditions. Nutritional supplementation with an awesome juice product named Genesis would be very helpful! Not only will it boost his immune system, but it will also help his skin to heal more quickly from the inside layers out. One ounce of Genesis (www.symmetrydirect.com/dhendon) provides all of the health advantages of a whole bottle of red wine ("resveratrol" --google it!), one whole pomagranate (ellagic acid), aloe vera juice, apple juice and 15 infused herbs. Yes, it is very safe for babies! It is 100% juice with very concentrated, standardized amounts of the miracle molecules that support natural healing! By the way, it speeds up healing when applied directly to the skin also.

Please call me for more info and visit my website to check out the product(s) and the scientific info to support it's use and benefits. There are three videos you can watch on the website about it too! Genesis is great for everyone to maintain good health, prevent, heal and restore!

Victorious Living to you and yours,

Hi there. So there are some natural things that have been used by people with good results. Here is a link to the use of enzymes and other natural anti-virals that are good with warts (mulluscum is of the same family and is often treated the same as warts). I think it would be helpful to contact a professional who has worked with this kind of treatment to help guide you through it if possible. I hope this helps & I am happy to answer any questions if I can.

Zymaderm is the only answer. Do not pop or pick as this will scar. When they do erupt get the core as this is the contagious part. Do not wipe his face only pat as wipeing makes it spread. Clean towel or wash cloth every time and do not share with other family. My ten year old had this last year and so did a 1 year old freind who gave it to my 1 year old Grand daughter. The Zymaderm you order on line and you put it on every dot you see. Some will still erupt but others will not. Please do not wait to order as it will continue to spread. Better to treat it now as it could take years to go away otherwise. Keep the Zymaderm on hand for a year after the bumps are no longer visable as it could come back. Best wishes!

my daughters used RETIN A and it burned their skin and left red patches during the burning. it left some discoloration on the skin, but it's going away. My youngest has them now and another mama on this site recommended Zymaderm and it works. It's painless and fast to apply. RETIN A you have to let the cream dry before they can run off and play. Zymaderm has worked, although some of them have been more stubborn than others. Good Luck, these things can be an inconvienence.

My daughter began to exhibit molluscum on her face at about 24 months of age. We just watched and waited for several months, assuming that it would run its course. However, they developed such that they were on the upper and lower eyelids of both eyes. Finally, we were referred to Ilona Frieden, MD at UCSF, who eventually removed them surgically (under brief general anesthesia). This was necessary because they had started to abcess (picture big ugly sack of infected matter directly on 2 year old's lower eyelid). The scars that she has are very minimal, and I don't think will be much of a concern, even when she is older. She did manage to pass this on to her two brothers, but they only got a couple of lesions each, and I had those immediately frozen off at the general dermatologist's office.

So, in my experience, watch and wait for a while....but don't be afraid to seek further help to remove them. It was about 9 months between the time we saw the first ones and when they were finally removed. She has had no recurrence.
