Looking for Cures for Molluscum Contagiosum

My daughter has molluscum contagiosum and our regular doctor has seen her 2 times for it. Both times she has said to just let it go and it will go away on its own. From what I have found online, that is true. However, I would like her to get rid of it before spring so she won't feel self concious of her "bumps". I read online about using Australian Lemon Myrtle essential oil and some other ideas for treatment to get rid of the lesions. Has anyone had any success with alternative treatments rather than the usual burning or freezing?

What can I do next?

Hi S.. I would start looking for something that boosts her immune system, rather than focusing on the exact problem. If her immune system is strong enough you will see those things go away much more quickly. Two things I would recommend: #1 chiropractic -- white cells increase 40% after a chiropractic adjustment. We are in Belleville and we see kids all the time. But email me if you need a recommendation on someone who is closer for you. #2 nutrition and/or herbal supplementation. Take her over to Jacob's Herb Shop on Hwy 50 and ask for Andrea. She's excellent and she'll help you find a remedy.

My 2 year old son also has this along with my niece who is the same age. We have been using Zymaderm on them and it seems to be working. You can get more information about it at www.molluscum-contagiosum.net. I just called and ordered it, no prescription necessary. I can't exactly remember the price but it was not to outrageous.

Good luck!

Hi S.. Two of my sons had minor cases of molluscum - one child had a couple spots on his back, and the other had some on his abdomen and up and down the inside of his left arm. By recommendation from my sister, whose daughter also had a case of MC, I tried the Silvercure products. I've included a link to their website below. The stuff worked well, and fairly quickly. They offer a variety of products and packages - I went with the $70 package and have more product than I know what to do with. I found myself mostly using the Silverskin - which seals off an open lesion (though I put this on lesions that weren't open and it worked fine). Here's the link:

Hi there. Is this something like eczema? I have never heard of this before, but my little guy has 2 forms of eczema and I have found that hydrocordizone 1% and eucerin are pretty slick. Also try swiching to fragrance free products... soap, lotions, deterent, shampoo, fabric softener..... If you do want to try that essential oil, I do know of a shop in waynesville where you could prolly get it.

my daughter had them on her thighs for about 2 yrs. the dr. said that there were things to help, but none of them work very well and are expensive, they would just go away in time. then, my mom told me to try elderberry juice, since it helps fight viruses. I mixed a teaspoon with a small glass of sprite or orange juice for her to drink every night for a month or so. they were all gone within a month. straight elderberry juice- it can be a bit expensive, but it works great! haven't had any since.

My daughter had some molluscum contagiosum on her inner thighs last year. The dr. we saw at the walk in clinic at our pediatrician's office prescribed a special expensive compound that you apply at night time. We used it for awhile, but it takes quite a long time and it irritated her a little bit. At a follow up visit at the pediatrician's office with our regular dr. he gave us some samples of Retin A - like you use on acne - and it worked faster! You put a small amount (the Retin A or the compund) on the spots at night and cover with tape or a band aid. It kind of freezes them off. My daughter's spots cleared up in a few weeks and she does not have any scarring. If it ever happens again I will ask for the Retin A first. E-mail me back if you have more questions about it. Hope this helps!

I have a friend who had this and the doctor recommended a product called "Hibaclens." She showed me, it is very liquid and you use it like soap, it eventually dries up the lesions. I believe the instrux are 2x per day. Read the bottle to make sure it is safe for a child, but drs. use this before surgeries for sterilizing their hands. It should be available in most major pharmacies.

About me: I was a nursing major and now going back for my Physician's Assistant degree. Good luck, be sure to read the product information before you make the purchase!

My doctor has also told me to just let it be. It is frustrating, because it can take a couple of years to disappear. The one thing I would be careful of is that if you do mess with it too much, there is the possibility that you could spread it, or make it worse. I took my son in about 6 mo ago. His is much better now.

I took my daughter to the dermatologist probably five times to try to get rid of that. It seemed to get worse with the freezing because it makes it itchy and the kids scratch which causes it to spread. We ended up getting a pair of tweezers and pulling the little white cores off when they came to the top. The core is the contagious part, so clean the tweezers before you touch anything. Irritating the bumps helps to cause the core to come to the top.

I hope this helps!

Hi S.. I noticed what I read online indicated that the virus lasts longer in people with a lower immune system. You may look into a nutritional supplement that will strengthen your daughter's immune system. Our kids have taken a supplement for years and, without changing anything else, they saw their allergy symptoms go away. Also - not sick near as often. Hope this helps.

S.,
My 8 year old son has the same thing. I was referred to a dermatologist who gave me an ointment. It is called Aldara. I will say, the first dermatologist did burn several of the spots and it was pure torture!! He blistered and now has scars on his legs. That same Dr. put on a cream on some of the spots that do the same thing as burning (probably some acid solution, I guess) and that was WORSE than the CO2 burns. He was in horible pain for a week, constantly in the nurses office and had to be bandaged several times a day for oozing or bleeding. I will say, the Aldara is so much more mild. I haven't been using it long enough to tell a difference yet but felt like I had to give you what I know.
It is such an ugly virus!! Would love to get it in check before the weather changes!
Good luck. B. -Arbonne Independent Consultant-
