Does Anyone Have Experience for Treating Molluscum Contaclosum?

My 2 year old little boy has been to the dermatologist for little bumps that he has been getting. The dermatologist and pediatrician labeled it Molluscum Contaclosum (they say it runs in the wart family). He has had a few topical treatments from the dermatologist. The last couple of weeks, the red bumps have really spread and become itchy for my little guy. Does anyone have experience with this and what did you do to treat? Not sure the treatment he is getting now is helping at this point.

My 6 year old son has something similar but more chronic, it has been about 3 years. I am finally going to have him tested for Celiac Disease. He also has sensitivity to dairy and has severe stomache cramping and pain. We have tried lots of topical treatments which will lessen the bumps but they never go away. If it is truly Molluscum, then it should go away completely after vigilant topical treatment for several months. Hang in there, I know it is trying. I hope he gets relief!

Ask your doctor about Tagamet (used for ulcers, but apparently works well for molluscum and warts). We tried burning them off, which did not work, but the Tagamet worked quickly.

I haven't heard of this condition, but since, from what you say, the problem seems to be getting worse, I'd definitely call the Drs. and have them re-check and be sure they are giving him something that will work. Sometimes the meds that work for one person won't for another, even with the same diagnosis.

Hi C.,

My daughter also had Molluscum. It started when she was around 18 months and lasted for about six months. Her doctor told me that there is not really any treatment and that they have to run their course. They can last up to 2 years! The good thing is once they get them they shouldn't again. Sometimes they would bleed from scratching and I would clean them with peroxide and put Neosporin on them. Good luck!

Hello,
My daughter had this quite bad on her neck. I tried homeopathy which didn't do much. What worked for us was Silver Cure. I got it online. After a few weeks of using the products the bumps were gone. We did pop the really big ones to get the white middle out to prevent them from spreading any more. It was not nice to do and was very uncomfortable for my daughter, but it did stop them spreading. When my son started getting them, I used the Silver cure products right away and we poped the couple that were getting big as soon as we could (when you can see a bit of white). He got over it within a couple of months and never had more than four or five bumps at once.
Good luck.

I was able to successfully treat this with a form of acupuncture called BioSet. Cypress Natural Medicine in Palo Alto does this. It's painless (no needles) and is successful.

Would love to know what the topical treatments are you've been using and if they are helpful. My 2 year old picked up Molluscum about 9 months ago and we are still trying to patiently wait for them to disappear. Sometimes they seem to start to go away only to move to another part of her body. We've been treating by dressing her in breathable long sleeves, even in summer so she won't pick them or scratch them.

We recently moved but our last pediatrician said that no real treatments are successful and that we have to wait for them to go away, like in a year! I know, this isn't so helpful. Sorry! Hope we both find something that works!

I used Retin-A on my older daughter and the side effects were bad, although my daughter got use to it and it didn't BURN as much anymore. But they did go away and haven't came back. I knew using Retin-A on my younger daughter would be a different experience and it was. I found, on Mamasource, an online order of ZymaDerm. It works good with the only side effect of dry skin in the area of application only. Was not itchy or anything. I applied it twice a day and they were gone within 3 weeks and never came back. It's a small bottle and you just put a small drop on top of the bump and that's it. Did that in the AM then PM and they were gone. The website is www.molluscum-contagiosm.net Good luck!

P.S. For a 2 year old, you will want to do it just once a day. My daughter was 4 and it said under 5 do it 1x a day, but that was not working so I got aggressive, since she was almost 5, and went for 2x/day and they were gone.

Per our pediatric dermatologist, do not put neosporin on it! Wash with regular gentle soap and water and keep the skin lotioned. My daughter had one bump that was diagnosed Molluscum. The pediatric dermatologist gave us two topicals to put on it twice a day. The first was Clindagel, which is clear. The second was Cloderm, which was white. Also, she put my daughter on Sulfameth-Trimeth, genertic for Bactrim, and oral medication since it had become infected.

If you look up the Molluscum Contaclosum on the internet, it can freak you out. They are harmless and almost everyone has been infected at some point in their life. The can take 12 weeks or so to clear up. If you are concerned, I recommend that you go back to your pediatrician or dermatologist.

My daughter had this condition when she was two. The dermatologist scraped them with some kind of instrument and after a few days of redness they started to heal up. The process was slightly painful but fast and the molluscum have never returned.

I am fighting the same thing with my 3 year old daughter. We have gone twice and had them "burn" them off, both times they came back. The last time she gave us topical treatment and as long as we use it every day it goes away.

my oldest daughter and all of her cousins on her fathers side had this when they were young. (all had this when they were under 3 years old) We used the topical cream that basically burned them off. It did take a few months but now none of the kids have them and there are no scars. It's really harmless, just annoying for the parents and the appearance.

Hi C., My son had that when he was about 2-2 1/2. We went to a dermatoligist also and had to put a topical treatment. The dermatoligist prescribed a maximum wort remover and a cream called Tretinoin, which is for retin-A. We applied it on his skin before bedtime. It worked and the worts went away and have not come back.
I hope this helps and good luck to you & your son. I hope it gets better soon.

Hi C.,

I had this as a young adult (had to do with my boyfriend not being very vigilent with cleaning his wetsuit - eww!) Anyway, I had to get the warts frozen off. I'm not sure if they would consider that for a little one but if they are getting worse and the cream isn't helping it might be an option. Good luck!
