My 7 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD in August 2005 and I am looking for a psychiatrist in the Des Moines area. We will be relocating to Johnston this weekend and need to find a new doctor for him. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Johnston schools are very good and you shouldn't have a problem. My 9 year old goes to Lawson in Johnston. Her Doctor is Dr. William Maher at Iowa Health Systems,on Merle Hay rd I have received multiple referrals from him for various things. He is very genuine and caring. He would be an excellent resource for a referal. Also blank Childrens Hospital Has Child Guidance Center that has very good Ped. Phys and childrens mental Health doctors.

Hi G.,

There are two great doctors in West Des Moines at 60th St. and University Avenue -- Dr Kevin Took and Dr Bridget Buck. My boys also have ADHD and other issues and they have been great to work with. There is also a PhD psychologist in their office, as well as several child therapists, who work with the doctors. Their number is ###-###-####. Good luck!

My stepson has had ADD/ADHD since he was 8. He's 13 1/2 now. The advice I have is stay away from Kavalier's office in West Des Moines. I feel like we've wasted 5 years there. This diagnosis/disease is frustrating for the parents and the children. Times get very hard. Homework times get very hard. Being a step-parent, I can say that I know I haven't been the best at staying patient with him, and patience is needed. And if your son gets put on medicinces and you think they aren't working, don't be afraind to say so. You know your son better than any doctor does.

Hi G.! I know of a wellness company that has vitamins that can help kids with ADHD. It isn't proven, but they do help. They are all natural with NO side effects. If you are interested then please email me and I can get you more information. ____@____.com

G.,
My son and I are currently seeing Dr. Nightengale through Orchard Place. He is six.

FYI, I'm going through a divorce with my husband too. I'm sorry it's so hard, I know. Finding a good doctor will really benefit you.
