JFF: The Little Things!

The date night question got me thinking!

We went out to dinner last night, and ordered some chips and salsa. I like the curled and folded chips, because I'm weird. (I have no other explanation.) I noticed my husband passing over all the curled chips, and getting all the broken and small chips. It's probably silly, but it made me feel really lucky!! I love that he remembered something so small, and left all the curled chips for me.

What little things does your significant other do, that make you feel darn lucky?

What can I do next?

Oh!! My husband has always held doors open for me. From the time we were dating until now, he has held the car door, and just about every door I've walked through. When I go places with my dad, i get a lot of face slams into the door. He doesn't hold the door open, and I'm so used to it now!!

Last week, the day before payday and funds were super tight. We were cleaning the garage and he decided we needed a beer. He went to the gas station and came back with 2 tallboys, in paper bags, because that's how we roll. When I went to throw mine away, I realized he had gotten me Coors light and himself Keystone. My Prince! He bought me the good, expensive beer and bought himself the 99c nasty one. He's a keeper.

Well yesterday after he came home from work, I was standing around tidying up the house, and he gave me a kiss and grabbed my boob. And smiled. Not like in a wanting way, but just in an affectionate way. Like he still thinks I'm all that. So that was nice.

I like the curled ones too!! :)

He orders for me. He will ask me what I want and when the waiter/waitress comes he orders my meal first, then his.

We stopped at Five Guys last night b/c we'd been wanting to try it and we had no kids. We get to the counter to order and see that the fries are cooked in peanut oil and I have a peanut allergy so couldn't have the fries. He offered to leave but I said I can still have a burger so we stayed. He felt bad I couldn't have fries (not like I need them anyway!) so he didn't order any either ;)

Oh, and the other night we went to family night at the pool. As we left I realized Aunt Flow was paying her monthly visit. So, we had to stop at the store on the way home and I was in swim suit and did not want to go in! He offered :) he came out with the extra large box of sport playtex, a large box of extended release midol and 4 candy bars (I shared with the boys :)!! I can only imagine the look the cashier gave him.

Chicken wings, I will not eat the drummies. Not sure if it is driven by caring or the knowledge that I will leave a plate of drummies but he eats only the drummies leaving me the wing ones even though he likes the wing ones better.

Every single morning he makes me a cup of coffee and brings it to me in bed...after he's let me sleep in.

When we were dating, I told him when I get rich, I want to have a vase of fresh flowers in the house...every day. So now, although we are not rich, he randomly will bring me home a bunch or two of inexpensive flowers, just because he knows I love fresh flowers. =)

Calamari - I can't stand the tentacles so as soon as the plate comes he takes them.

Even more important, he will on his own bring me chocolate if he realizes that I am having a very bad day!

BAHAWAHA!!

Seriously, he is the most generous man I have ever met. And just plain fun.

He has all but one item stopped using onions when he cooks! Almost 10 years and he rarely buys them (even for himself)...just because they gross me out! And he LOVES them.

I'm a curled chip eater too!

Mostly he understands that when I'm freaked out (good, bad, pissed, happy) and I need to talk to him...that I don't want to wait...he makes me first! (well if they kids are not needing him)....

He makes sure if he uses the last of my vanilla creamer in the morning after I leave for work...to go buy a new one in the middle of the night so that I don't get cranky!

ETA: knows that when I start a sentence with "Honey, have you...?" and before I can finish say "you left them on the desk/table/stairs!"...and there they are! (glasses and car keys)

Josh waits until I'm in the shower, then sneaks a fresh towel in there for me and puts it out where I can reach it.

In the morning he sets out my clothes for me so I can get dressed quickly.

Thanks for this post, I love that man! :)

I prefer the curled ones, the dark fries, and the drumstick wings -- he always offers me those when he finds them! He loves the tentacles, which I don't, so that works out great. He does the dishes in the evening and makes sure I have a few hours alone on the weekends if I want them.

Now that our daughter is older and stopped napping and maybe because I'm pregnant and he knows I'll be up with the new baby at all hours, he's taken over Saturday and Sunday mornings so I can sleep in.

He buys me "just cause" books. :) Ones he think I'll like or ones he's liked. He'll order them in my name so I get unexpected packages with my name on them.

He plays with our children, I mean really plays with them- including the infant! He's on the floor building towers, playing "Batman and Robin", shaking a rattle and playing "How Big Is the Baby"... every day.

I have a lot of friends whose spouses simply don't do this and many of them have commented on how involved he is. The man has his faults like the rest of us, but he is an outstanding father!

He takes the kids for all their blood draws because he knows how much it hurts my heart to see them suffer.

When I am sobbing silently in the night just because having kids with a serious illness is such a gosh darn pressure cooker, he will reach out and hold my hand without even waking up. Even in his sleep he knows how to make me feel better!

He opens doors for me, remembers all the things I forget, brings the kids to work with him when he is doing something he knows they will enjoy, plays with the kids even when he is dog tired from work, makes me laugh, picks out clothes for me in the store when I don't feel like I should spend money on myself, the list goes on and on and on..........

After a year I still get a kiss when he drops me off for work, he drops me off for work, when I am upset he starts the bath water, scrubs my back when I ask, and well I am with him... How lucky could I be. Everyone says there are a million fish in the sea but I am a swan and he is my lifetime partner! (he worked at the state park that has swans... its an inside thing between us.)

OOOO and he will take my lipstick and write me notes on the bathroom mirror

My hubby does hundreds of little things for me. He always opens my car door, and is really disappointed if I don't wait for him to do it. He picks the onions out of my food for me, or serves me and makes sure not to get any. He washes my back in the shower, he'll stand outside of the shower with my towel and dry me. He always thanks me for a "great meal", even when it isnt one he loves. He writes me a one or two line love note on a tablet kept by the coffee pot, almost every single day. Anytime I casually mention something I want, he will either go out and get it, or tell me to go get it. He makes our son speak respectfully to me. When we eat mushrooms, he always gives me the last one.

For starters, he stayed in the room with our daughter (10) to have FOUR teeth pulled, and let me wait in the lobby. This is the same daughter, whom he sat in the room with, when she was having a broken (permanent) front tooth repaired 2 years ago.

He makes the coffee every morning.
He lets me sleep in.
He never lets me pump the gas in the car, if he is with me.
He never suggests that I shouldn't have bought something, or that I shouldn't order something at a restaurant.

The few time we have been apart for a week at a time, he has written me songs/poetry.

Mostly, he makes me laugh, and feel secure, and he teaches our kids to love.

My husband does a ton of little things but the ones that always make me smile (on the inside and the outside) are:

He keeps track of my cycle. He will bring me chocolate and let me know I am ready to start in the next day or two.

He knows that when we go out to breakfast, I like something savory and something sweet, so he will let me pick what I want first and then he picks the opposite of me so that we can share. *Eggs Benedict & Strawberry French Toast. Yum!

He watches True Blood with me every week, even though he loved the books he hates the TV series....but he still watches it with me! *We have had 1 'Date Night' TV show a week for the past 15+ years...even though he is not much of a TV guy...and when it's our TV night he makes sure all the kids are in bed and know that it's Mommy & Daddy time!
