Jff--do You Think You Look Your Age?

Updated on April 29, 2011

I was watching Real Housewives of New York and Alex said "in all my 37 years", and my first thought was, wow she looks a lot older than 37. I'm almost 33 and I honestly believe I could pass for my early 20s, and I think this about most of my friends too. I just think we all look so young. But after watching this, it got me thinking that maybe I'm delusional and I really do look 33 or maybe older. So, my question is, do you think you look your age?

What can I do next?

I'm delusional and plan to stay that way. Everyone tells me I look young for my age but since they don't know how old I really am, they might be assuming that I'm older than I am and think I look younger because I really look my age...

Ive always looked young for my age. Back when i used to frequent bars (before the age of 21) it was difficult to get in. That was annoying, but now that i am 29 and i still get carded for booze and movies, and the repairman asks if "my mother is home"....i love it!

You know I was confident that I looked younger than I am since I would get shocked looks when I told people my age and that I have 2 kids.

It stopped happening literally right after I turned 40. It was weird and then one day I went to a restaurant with my girlfriend and we both ordered wine. He asked her for her ID but not me!!! I was devastated and I had to say "Hey don't you want to see mine??" teasing him and he responded kind of laughing "Sorry ma'am I didn't mean to offend you". OMG! He said ma'am! OK now I KNOW I don't look young for my age anymore! LOL!

Hm, I am 36. My spirit is young, I want to say I don't look my age, and i didn't, unfortunately I have been getting short end of the stick for years now and everything shows on my face. I got grey hair (all over) when I turned 19 (thanks life, been pleasure living you, ya know). So, yes I look my age, even older maybe. I have wrinkles, my hair is dyed red because well what the hell go to the extreme I guess. But, and here is a big BUT, even if I had a bazillion dollars around me I would not perform anything to get rid of my wrinkles. I am, in a twisted kind of way, proud of what I have gone through and how I have pulled through and my wrinkles are here to show my resilience.
i make myself feel good like this all the time hahaha.

I agree that a lot of it is in the genes. I am blessed with good genes.

I am extremely depressed that I am turning 50 later this year but I am happy that no one knows that... I pass for early to mid 30's. I don't act like 40's either:) My daughter and I look a lot alike. She is 16 and when we are together, people think we are sisters. Of course that drives her nuts right now but she said she'll appreciate it when she is in her 40's.

I attribute that to good genes, good skin care, my attitude, and taking care of my body.

EDIT: my hubby is only 6 yrs older than me but I have been referred to as his daughter by strangers. Example: he was putting gas in my convertible and the man came on the microphone and said, what a nice dad to fill you your daughter's gas tank. OUCH

My style is younger and a little more modern than a lot of 40 yr olds, so when I am really put together, I think Iook younger. (Thanks to my 18 yr old daughter styling me!)
But my face shows the 40 years. I have crows feet and all the little lines that come with life. So, my face does not look as young as my hair and clothes. I certainly dont feel 40! But thats a whole other post. lol

Mirror, mirror on the wall...has my face actually aged at all?

I'm REALLY not sure. I *certainly* don't look younger than my age (I'll be turning 26 in May). My dog ears (ahem), I mean, breasts have begun to migrate and my smile / wrinkle lines are more than imagination. I FEEL like I've aged ten years over the past two, but in reality this might, in fact, be just my own perception.

When I get carded and am excited, people do think I'm a little loopy. I don't help my case by rambling about the mathematical connection between motherhood and gravity and why it can be flattering to be seen as a young thing ;-)

I don't think I do but it is based on objective criteria like being carded from time to time. I don't act my age either so that probably helps the effect. :p

When I went back to college every now and then the kids would talk about how 35 is soooooo old. I would ask just exactly how old they thought I was, they said late 20s. I said 42, noooo mom is that old, you don't look that old. :p One thing is for sure no one thinks their parents look young.

I think most people look older than what they are until they reach mid-twenties. Then all of the sudden, or maybe it's just wishful thinking :), they begin to look younger than what they really are.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of women who I think don't look their age, but I think as we age, the way we see a particular age changes. i.e. I look at 16 year olds and think, "my gosh they look so young", but when I was that age I thought I looked SO old. It works the opposite way when I see a 32 year old. You know what I mean? ;) Hopefully we all age gracefully though!

Most people think I am 28 or 29. I will be 36 in October. I don't think people are just saying it to be nice either. Most of the time when age comes up it because we are talking about having more babies. I always say that I am not sure becasue my clock is ticking and I feel like I am running out of time. Most women always tell me that I have plenty of time, because they think I am younger. I personally think it in my genes. My sister that is 46 can pass as her DD sister instead of mother. I just hope I can continue to stay young looking.

I'm 49, but I look 10 years younger, maybe more. I would look younger if it weren't for my "turkey wattle" chin, and sun damaged skin. I'm very thin, and as thin people age, skin gets thin, veins pop, and muscles and tendons look "ropey" - plus I have NO butt, so what little that is there sags. But, even with that, I look 35ish. Up until about 3 years ago, I used to get carded at times for casino's, and alcohol purchases. People often assume my grandson is my son.

My hubby and I look young-- we get carded to drink regularly...he will be 35 in August, I turned 33 in January. My parents are in their early 50s and could pass for early 40s and my grandma is in her 80s and could pass for 60s so I thank God for my good genes :) I also have other things on my side because though my parents look young, they both smoked for years (dad quit at 40 and mom at 50) and spent too much time in the sun (things I DO NOT do)....so I am hoping that helps even more. Of course, I am on my way to 3 kids in 4 years so maybe the grey hair they give me (ha!) will make me age prematurely....and I still would like 2 more kiddos --yeah- nuts!

One of my au pair's friends stopped by and thought I was another sitter there to take over for her....yes, she thought I was in my early 20s :) yeah me! ha!

I'm 40, and I think I look 40. I teach high school, though, and my students are always absolutely shocked when I tell them my age. They always guess that I'm 30ish. Others that I meet guess me to be about 10 years younger too. Sometimes I think it's because I'm very short, but that's ridiculous, because it's not like I'm going to get any taller as I age. I get comments like - "Wow, you look so young. You're so small!" It makes no sense. I'll take it though! :)

People always tell me that they'd never guess me to be my stated age... but people also lie to be nice! So it really is hard to say because there is such a range of what is *normal* for a given age. I see some mom's my age (I'm 38) that look much older because of the way they dress, or wear their hair, or just their general physical wellness that can make people look much older than they are. Then, there are those people that will always be thought of as much younger than they are... my cousin, for example, is 4'11"... she is 34, and attractive, dresses up to date, etc., so she is always thought to be much younger... primarily because of her small stature, which is hard for her in her work, as she is a banking exec.

Personally, I don't think I look quite my age, for what I consider to be *normal* for 38. I usually get pegged for about 30-32. But who the heck knows. I feel like I'm 80... LOL

that woman, Alex looks older in part because of how she dresses (as clothing definitely plays its part, whether we want it to or not) also, to me, people who are always frowning (which Alex does a lot of nowadays since she found "her voice" tend to ALWAYS look older.. smile, it will shave about 5 to 10 years off a person's face.

no. I dont think i do. I try and keep myself young. I have a great guy best friend who makes sure I dont ever look like I am trying to hard to stay youthful. that helps me out alot. We have this thing with moms that dress like there kids. I have told him if it ever seems like I am trying to hard he is too tell me. Same goes for him. I just cant look like i am trying to hard. I want to get older gracefully. I am also covered in tattoos. So it is hard to see myself as looking anything but a few years younger. Again, i am only looking through my eyes. I have no idea how people receive me.

I think the tatts make me feel younger. so i guess i will use them as my cloak....i am having my sleeve finished for my birthday!! I am a nightmare before Christmas junkie...Jack will have his girl soon:) Lock, stock and barrel are for my kiddos:)

People always tell me I look young for my age, but I sure the hell dont see that when I look in the mirror. I think a lot of how we "act" has a bearing on how old someone might perceive us to be. I think I dress and act a lot younger than 53 and thats what throws people off, they always think I'm in my 40's, which still sucks to me. I would WAY rather be mistaken for 21 again :)

So for a LONG time people have always guessed that I was 21... wether I was 16 till now.....

Looking back I think people will just tell you that you look either a) what they wish you were OR b) what they think you wish you were...

hehehe... my husband thinks I look "hot" (or at least he says so) and that is good enough for me! I can only ask for so much when i am hugely pregnant with baby #2 hehe!
