I'm a Fishing 'Widow'...

This is the second day in a row I'm left to my own devices (meaning work, child rearing, and laundry) because my guys out fishing. Don't get me wrong, he totally deserves it... My question is this: What do YOU do when you're stuck with the kids and your guy is out doing something fun? How do you occupy your time? To me, it's just like any other weekday, the WAHM dealing with everything solo. I'm not jealous or anything, I just wonder how you ladies use the time without your guy. I'm trying to make this feel like a weekend, but it's hard to make it feel like a Saturday without my man and doing the same stuff I do during the week ;) What do YOU do when your SO is away?? How do you fill the time?

What can I do next?

When my sister first married my brother in law, she had a complete melt down when hunting season came around. She was upset that he didn't want her to go (seriously? In the woods with a bunch of men with nothing but a campfire and no bathrooms?), she cried, she needed someone to stay with her, she didn't like him being gone.
I was like, "Honey....You're going about this all wrong. He's gone doing what makes him happy. There's not another woman within a hundred miles so you've got nothing to worry about. You are here in civilization with hair and nail salons, fabric stores, you can go to bed when you want, get up when you want, eat what you want."
Other hunting wives told her the same thing. That they actually looked forward to that time of year. They all had kids. They'd send them to grandma's house or take them to yard sales or movie matinees. They got out their sleeping bags and pretended they were camping in the living room with popcorn and movies or building forts.
My sister is a seasoned pro now when it comes to hunting and fishing season. She helps her husband pack to send him on his way.
It is whatever you make it.
I've been a single mom for years so having a man around or not had no impact on me and the kids having fun.
I live where it's often cold, even in the summer, and I'd build a fire, get it up to about 90 in the house and the kids would run around in their bathing suits and we'd have a picnic inside. My kids are 24 and 15 and doing silly stuff like that is some of their favorite memories.

Well, my friend sends her kids to other peoples' houses. Seriously.
And she is a SAHM with all school-aged kids. She will try to get one family to take all her kids for the entire day so she can relax, but I refuse to do it. Others do. I would feel ok doing it if it was her turn one Saturday and my turn the next. Maybe another M. would agree to switching off entertaining the kids.

You make him take a kiddo or two with him. :) My hubby and 5 y.o. son are out on their fishing kayak as we speak. Baby girl is still to little, but once she can swim the kids will take turns spending the day with Daddy. Being down one kid is like having the day off.

I simply live my life! Do stuff with my son. Prepare our meals, do a little laundry--whatever I would normally do. It's not like we're not busy when he's NOT here, right? O. less sammie to make.

I do just treat it like anther day, with the exception that my older son is home, but I avoid too much house work and instead take my kids out to lunch or to a park or something. Than after the summer fishing and the fall hunting I get my treat when I take 2 weeks to go off by myself to see my BFF.

Do anything I want to~ :) I read, take walks with my kids, cook silly, fun food for them, have slumber party with my kids, visit friends, play with my kids, go shopping or another adventurous place that my kids want to visit.

To be honest if my hubby has an activity he likes and he does on his days off I can pretty much promise you I am going to be going doing my own thing just about as often and for as long as he gets to.

Having something you enjoy and getting out of the house to do is just as important. Join some groups in your area, maybe a quilting group, a book club, an exercise club, etc...find something to do that makes you happy too.

My hubby is deployed, so I can't really look at it as being 'stuck with the kids'....or that would make for a REALLY long year. Make the best of what God has given you, enjoy every moment with your sweet children. Just be grateful that at the end of the night, he is still home with you. I would love to have that right now. Enjoy it!
