Hi ladies. We have decided that at the end of the school year we are moving to Michigan so I am trying to think ahead. Do you all have any ideas for saving money, moving with three kids cross country, packing, selling off things, etc.? If any of you have done this or know of someone who has please let me know what has worked. My last move was from Georgia to here years ago before the kids were born and the military moved us. This tme we are doing it on our own. Thank you in advance for your help. :-)

What can I do next?

Hi Khristina-we just made an international move with three kids(I stay on Mama-source for my sanity) from Texas to the Turks & Caicos Island of Provodenciales. Our kids are 2,4 &7 and all about to have b-days this month!!! Anyway, we continually reminded them that no matter where we were we were family and family is what's important. We let our girls tell people all about it as they were ready, we never pushed it, and we made sure that the key adults in their lives, teachers, close friends etc., knew so that they could support the girls when they did decide to talk. We made promises that we could keep, getting their own snorkeling gear for the beach, showed them pictures(yearbook) of their new school etc. It really helped because we started talking about it 7 mos. before it ever happened so that when it finally did they were ready and excited. We sold lots of things, garage sell and craigs list and then we gave away a lot of things, close friends, cleaning lady etc. Are you using movers, we used A-1 out of Arlington-they did a good job. If you are moving yourself I recommend using PODS-they are great! I hope this helps and I hope you have fun starting this new chapter in your lives.

I have moved cross country 2 times now with 3 children (we moved from TX to CT in 2004 and from CT to TX in 2007) - feel free to email me off board.

my kids were 7, 5, and 1 when we moved the first time, and 10, 8 and 4 when we moved back.

I also have moved long distances prior to having children and when my oldest was a brand new baby.

I'm jealous, I'd love to be moving back to the mid-west! Research, research, research the moving companies. Interview and get quotes from at least 3. If you're doing it all yourselves I would still request a moving company come in and give you a quote they should be free- you can better estimate the amount of stuff you have then. I would still hire pro packers for areas like the kitchen unless you like to pack. Get boxes designed for kitchen things like dishes. Let the kids be involved in the moving process so they get excited about it. As far as selling things off try craigslist.com and plan a garage sale. Also if you have kids clothing & gear try the Just Between Friends Sales. It'll help unload a lot at one time. Good luck!

Hello Khristina,

Good luck with your move. I hope you'll be closer to family.
Where in Michigan?

keep your computer cpu with you so no one can get to your financial info on the hard drive. also keep with you important documents such as bank papers, snn cards, birth certificates, medical records, etc. any thing that could be used for identity theft.
