Ideas for a First Father's Day

After years of waiting, we finally became parents last year. This will be my husband's first Father's Day. On Mother's Day (my first) he went out of his way to make it special, he is very creative, sentimental/romantic, original, and detail oriented....I'm not. So I need ideas to make that day super special. What suggestions do you have?

What can I do next?

When my son was a baby in day care, for a Father's Day project they took white painter hats and covered it with different colored baby hand prints. It's such a cute gift! My husband loves it!

Are you tech savvy? Could you put together a picture slide show on a DVD-R that you guys could watch together before he opens his gift? If you can, maybe you could do something like a pic of him as a single guy (like playing football or something) with the word "then" under it. Then one of him holding a tiny football in your child's hand with the word "now" and then a bunch of other pairs following. Of course, that's just an example to show you what I'm talking about. You'll have to go through your pics and look for ones that match up well. At then end put several of him with the baby in succession and then the words "This is what a real man looks like" or something like that, then the words "I'm so proud of the father you have become. Happy first Father's Day!" Then set it all to nice music. He'll be able to keep it for years.

That's just one idea. I'm sure you'll gets tons of others and be able to put together a wonderful Father's Day for him from all of the suggestions these great mamas will be giving you! Best of luck!

For gifts for any occassion (Father's Day, Birthday, Christmas, etc.) my husband likes to get something he wants anyway, usually music or a film. Those are his big hobbies, so I usually get him something like that (boring to me) and a card the kids scribble on. He got me a mug with our son's picture on it for my first Mother's Day, so that is also a nice idea, or something he can take to work if he works somewhere he can have personal items.

There is nothing like a DVD of photos with music; it is a gift that lasts a lifetime. I like PhotoShow.com. Also, a digital audio recorder to capture sounds and special moments can't be beat. I still listen to my now six year old telling her story about preschool at the dinner table; or my three year old breathing when asleep. My gosh, there is nothing like the beauty of new life captured for the future of you spouse, you and them. ~ Enjoy the moment!

You got some nice ideas here, but this is one of my favorite gifts for a man. I bought this for my fiance, from me, but you could certainly make this a special gift from a child to dad...

Even if he is not a jewlery guy - my fiance isn't - I'd still bet he'd love this. My fiance wears his anytime we go somewhere. You could personalize it with your husband's OR your child's initials on front, and something like My Dad, My Hero, or your child's birthdate on back. The necklace is not cheap, but it is weighty, and quite lovely. As it says in the description, the chain that comes with it is oxidized, which you can see in the pictures, and personally, I really like that and think it looks very masculine.

And several responses talked about photo gifts, which are quite popular now (I give them a lot), but with the necklace, you could consider the wooden keepsake box, with a picture tile on the top with a picture of your child, your husband and your child, or all of you on it. (The link below is from Walmart photo center, but there are other photo gift sites that make these boxes too, like Shutterfly, etc. Shutterfly has theirs on sale but the sale ends today, if you want to take advantage of the deal!)

I also got this for my fiance when I got him the necklace, so he'd have something to keep the necklace and any other special items in. It's such a nice set of gifts to give together... perhaps one from you and one from your child?

Honestly, my guy is a manly, dirty hands, outdoor kinda guy, and he LOVED and was completely touched by these gifts.

Check them out!

If he's a coffee drinker you culd get a mug made with photos of your child. Or maybe make a small scrapbook of photos of them together. There are also tons of child/father books that you could get him. Im not sure how old your child is but plan some things to do that day, the zoo, dinner, a picnic. you could have a special t-shirt made, or buy a daddy t-shirt. The options are endless, have fun with it!

I got my husband a shirt that said, "Big Guy" and a matching romper that says, "Little Guy." I know that my husband secretly loves to match our son, so anything matching would be great. I have also thought about buying him a new camera with a really quick shutter speed. Our little guy is 10 months old now, and it seems like we always take pictures when his head is down or right after he smiles.
