How Long to Wait

ok ladies- i think when you start birth control they say to wait at least a month before abandoning "other" means of contraception. well i had a mixup with my insurance and was off for a week (unavoidable) then started again. i also switched brands back to one i had used before, but when i switched the first time my dr said there should be no interruption of protection. SO after one week of being off, and now switching brands as well, i guess i should probably wait the entire month, again, to be safe right? am not a fan of "other" methods at all!! i am happily married, i just can't get pregnant right now - the issue with my insurance was that we lost it due to a premium hike (it doubled). when we lost the insurance, i was left with no HSA card either, which was what i had always used. ANYway. it's a terrible time to get pregnant for me. i am waiting a month just to be safe. is this the common opinion?

What can I do next?

You definitely want to give the birth control time to get into your system and you want to make sure that your cycles are going the way they should before you do the deed. If you REALLY want to be sure you don't get pregnant, you may want to wait even another month. Obviously that's not ideal for a marriage so one thing you could do as a back-up is withdrawal. NOW, it's not 100% effective but with the birth control, it should ease your mind a little. I would still wait as long as you can though to be on the safe side before having sex at all but if you can't wait, that's one options. There is also always condoms which aren't the greatest, I know but it is an option. Just make sure you always use some back up method if you are ever on antibiotics because they tend to reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Good luck. I'm married, pregnant with number two and I know how stressful it can be when the timing "isn't right".

my opinion, and I'd probably "overdue it" personally, is to use other protection for an entire cycle month.

I can see your fear in getting pregnant.Healthcare Insurance is through the roof my husband is to the point of not wanting to pay for it he want's to pay out of pocket. And we did this for a few yrs.But I couldn't deal with it anymore so I had to ask for assistance from the state health insurance for our kids.

Hi

I am in a similar situation. I have been on the pill for years now and i didn't get my period this month. I didn't start back on the pill the sunday after my period was suppose to start (was afraid to do so in case i was pregnant). Now I'm just waiting for my period to arrive (been to docs to confirm I am not pregnant) so I can start my new pill pack. My doc reminded my I should wait a good month before relying entirely on pill protection. On another side note... 2 years ago I, like you, switched pill brands and I ended up pregnant with my now 15 month old twins ;) I believe there was a day or two in the transition that I was unprotected. So, my point is to not scare you but to remind you to be careful and if you really don't want to get pregnant at this time, its worth the wait (and frustration) of using back-up for the first month or so of being back on your pill. Best wishes!
