We are learning about fire safety in our small in-home preschool (5 kids) and was thinking about taking them to a fire station to meet the fire fighters. Have you done this with your kids? The girls are all 3 and 4 years old.

What can I do next?

I know you already went but I just had to say... my Hubby is a Firefighter and they always love it when they get to interact with kids. After all most of them are just big kids themselves :)

My dad used to take our son all the time when he was younger. One time, they even took our son out on the fire engine for a short drive in the parking lot. The fire fighters always gave him a great visit.

Just call the station in advance to set up a time. Assuming there's no emergency, they're happy to meet with kids.

We just did this today actually with my local moms club. Took a bunch of children (1-5 yr olds...boys and girls) to the local fire station where they gave us a tour and the kids all got plastic firehats and got to sit in the truck. They also got to see the firefighter's clothes and the masks they wear. All in all the kids had a great time! It was set up in advance by calling the fire station.

Our play group visited our local fire station. (Navo in Aubrey) It was so much fun. The firemen were great. They let every kid have a turn in the fire truck. They put on full fire gear so that the kids could see what they would look like in a house full of smoke. The fireman looks a little menacing with the mask and everything so they emphasize that it's important that if you see "that" in your house, he's safe and you need to go to him. Then all the kids got to turn at holding the hose and got to squirt water at a fence. We all took baked goods to the firemen as a thank you.

I have visited three fire houses and a police station with cub scouts.

Call the local station and ask when they would be able to do a tour. Tell them the children's age and what you are trying to do...they will set something up!

Since our kids were older - they got to get timed into putting on the turn-out gear that the fire fighters wear! It was sooo much fun!!!

We brought in cookies for them taking the time to give us the tour.

HAVE A BLAST!!!

The firefighters usually go to the kids school here, but when we lived in the city we'd walk past the fire station every day, and the guys would let my kids climb in the trucks and press all the buttons (cute guys too! Imagine me, pregnant and trying to look cute back, LOL!!)... ANYWAY, yes, my kids love some firefighters (and they're easy on the eyes too!) Oh and yes, they learned a lot about fire safety, but again, they learn all that in school as well :)

Yes I took the Girl Scout troop I am the leader of. Our local firestation was fantastic. They took us on a tour, reviewed saftey procedures (talked about when it's okay to call and when it's not, asked them about fire alarms in the house, did they know what to do, etc).

Then we are pretty lucky we have two female firefighters in the station. One of them was on duty and the girls thought that was THE BEST PART...second best part was they let them get in the truck and take pictures. The girls were curious about how do they know when they need to leave...so they set off the "alarm" so the girls could understand.

The firefigthers loved it. THey told us they love doing this stuff.

Such a great inexpensive field trip. We did take them a basket of goodies. And a gift card to the grocery store.

I bet if you call the firestation they have a program for this age group. My ids always loved the firestation field trips.
THe more they see the fireman dressed in his gear the better. You want the gilrs to know he is safe.

We've done it a couple of times. It's a great activity for kids that age. Some will be too shy to go on the truck or anything, but others will be really excited to try everything. Even the shy ones will have fun watching and listening.

yes, we just pulled over, got out and went up to the station. the firefighters knew with one look at my 4 yr old boy what to do. apparently it's pretty common for parents to pop in with curious kids! they let him crawl all over the engine and wear a firemans hat, they gave him a tour of the station. it rocked.

I was RAISED by a fire fighter and a good chunk of my family is/are fire fighters so I feel like I was raised in a fire station!

We did a field trip earlier this year with my sons 3-K class and they loved it. Not sure how much they understand but he knows it's dangerous to be a FF.

Yes, I did it with a small group when I was starting my child care center. I ended up with about 6 kids going. We all went in my car, 2 trips with a helper. The firemen let the kids climb on the truck, they got to turn on the sirens, they got to put on their gear and take pictures in it, and they got to go on a big tour. If you call around and talk to the fire stations you'll figure out which one is the most kid friendly. One time I took a young man working on a patch for Cub Scouts, he had a developmental disability, anyway he took off and went in their private quarters. They didn't care for that too much. I also visited one years ago that had the tower for the hoses to be hung in to dry. That was very informative and the kids got to slide down the pole in this one.
