Graceland?! I am not a huge Elvis fan, but I have the opportunity to go through the area and was wondering if it is worth the time and money? Also, any other ideas of fun things to do in the Memphis area? My boys are 9 & 14. Thanks!

What can I do next?

It's ok - cool to see and "been there" type thing. Whatever you do, do NOT stay at Heart Break Hotel! It's old, dirty and disgusting!

The company I worked for had an office in Memphis. I've driven by Graceland many times and watched all the tourists waiting to get in. I've been curious about what the inside looked like, but never enough to try to go on a tour.

The only people I've met that were really delighted to go were Elivs fan fanatics. Other wise its a nice place to visit if you can tour for $5 or less.

As for other things to do be sure to go to some of the world famous rib restaurants for fantastic food. The national BBQ cook off is held in Memphis. Its called "Memphis in May".

Good luck to you and yours.

I wasn't much of an Elvis fan, but did see him in concert once near the end of this career. My husband wanted to see Graceland when we were passing through Memphis. I actually enjoyed the tour and became a bigger fan.
Here's a link for some other attractions.
Hope you have fun. But try to avoid going the week of Elvis' death. It is the 35th anniversary and will probably be a "zoo."

I worked there (passing out and repairing tape recorders for the tourists) my first semester of college. Pretty much the only people who really enjoy it are huge Elvis fans. It's also in a terrible--traffic-wise--(and pretty dangerous) area of Memphis. Personally, I'd skip it.

Tourism-wise Memphis has never been overly impressive to me. I don't know if that's because my family is from there and I spent seven years living there, but there are a few other things besides Graceland in Memphis to do and see. There's a place called Mud Island that has a replica of the Mississippi River with running water that my grandfather used to take us to. Since the last time I was there, they've added a lot of things like paddle boats and other activities that you can pay for, but the park is free.

Another place he used to take us was the Peabody Hotel to see the ducks come down the elevator and get in the fountain. It's an interesting spectacle, complete with a red carpet and music.

A lot of people like to walk down Beale Street for the music and sights. The Pink Palace has an interesting museum, if your boys are into that sort of thing. It seems like they have a planetarium and IMax theater too. The zoo is not bad. Not the best we've been to, but decent enough. These are the only things I can think of off the top of my head. Enjoy your trip!

I've been a few times (all while in college) and I liked it. Not a huge Elvis fan, but I like to say "yeah, I've been there." Pink Palace is a nice, kid-friendly museum, Beale street is fun (should be okay for the kids, at their ages), Peabody Hotel (look up the duck walk schedule), zoo isn't bad. There are also riverboat rides on the Mississippi and I think there's a "mud museum" or something where you can learn some local history. Ride a trolly.

Just be aware of where you are and what time it is... for example, the neighborhood around Graceland is pretty shady and I wouldn't want to be caught there after dark...

I liked it, but then I was like 10 when I went. If I was in the area, I'd swing by it just to say we did. Not a huge fanatic (I'm young-ish, lol) but I do like him, so it was cool to see some of the stuff.
