Hello fello metro Memphis people. I have been living in Desoto county now for 3 years and have not really seen what there is to do around here for fun. All I see if going out to eat, movies...all things that are more than my budget can hanlde these days. Does anyone have any ideas for me? My kids are bored and quite frankly so am I.

What can I do next?

We moved to Olive Branch 3 years ago from Midtown Memphis. We are still trying to find ALL the things to do as well. We do frequent the OB park. It is a great place any time of day to take the kids. I don't know if a membership to the Y is an option for you, but we have found it to be great for year round swimming.....especially when cabin fever really starts to hit in the middle of winter for our 4 yo.

It is fun to go downtown Memphis (during the day of course) and riding the trolley. It's cheap, on weekends it's like $.50 I think and you want to take the Riverside (River..something) trolley. This takes you around town & down by the Mississippi River side & it's fun to do. Walking around downtown is fun too. You have to go to the Peabody Hotel & see the Peabody Ducks. They are so cute. They are usually out I believer from 11am-5pm. If you can get there when they come or leave the fountain, it's quite a little show.

You can also drive to the River, park & picnic there (course right now that may be a bit chilly).

You can look at parks to go to for picnics and play. Google nature trails & see what's in the area. We've not taken advantage of those yet.

Also the Memphis Zoo has a yearly pass that, if you go more than say 3 times it pays for itself. Then you can go as often as you like & don't even have to pay for parking (which I think is like $3).

We've been here 2 years but it's been kind of a frantic 2 years so we haven't availed ourselves to too much here either. We have a daughter getting married in January so we keep hoping things will calm down after that...although I'm sure it'll just shift gears.

You can also contact the Memphis Chamber of Commerce and they may have lots of ideas for your family that are within your budget.

Have fun!

Well, there's the OB park with a playground, pond, and lots of walking areas. There's a game place (similar to Chuckee Cheese, but minus the yucky pizza and cheesy theme) in the shopping center by Bruster's on Goodman between Davidson & Craft, but of course costs some $$. Jump, in Southaven is like Pump It Up and has some public hours I think where the kids can jump for a fee. My oldest has started sports with the OB park and that keeps us busy in the evenings. We have a membership to the Memphis Zoo, well worth the $$ and drive. WC Johnson Park at 721 Byhalia Road and Johnson Park Drive has water spray parks that are fun and free when its hot out.

THere's also the Museum System in Memphis. They have a membership too if you think you'll go. I'm not sure which museums are all included though. The Pink Palace is like memphis's Science museum. There's also a Children's Museum, and a Fire Musuem. These are the ones kids enjoy best. There are other museums, mostly history, but they're not as kid oriented. There are severl community theatres too, some children's some adult. Tickets don't cost near as much as The Orpheum or Theatre Memphis. Germantown Theatre is very active. Desoto Civic Center has productions sometimes too and hosts a lot of events so check their calendar. The Midsouth Fair comes in Sept/Oct. It had its last year at the memphis grounds this year but will return next year at a location close to Tunica MS I think.
In Olive Branch they do many things around the holidays in Olde Towne. We usually get a mailer/paper with a schedule. Snowden Park in Southaven does Fireworks displays for July 4th and usually has a drive-thru lights display around Christmas.

I grew up in Memphis and now live in Olive Branch. My kids are younger than yours though. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
