Recently my 5 year old has started having nose bleeds. Several have occurred during the night. As bad as this sounds, I know he is not picking his nose because he was sitting on my lap one time when out of the no where it started to bleed. Any thoughts!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the great responses! When I took him to his 5 year check up, I mentioned this to the doctor and she said it was allergies but did not explain it in this kind of details. I left there not understanding how allergies could be causing this. He has always had problems that we need a humidifier. Now I will look more closely into a bigger one and even try the 'moisture' tricks. Thank you again for comforting me in this situation!

It sounds like you have gotten a lot of advice, so I will affirm what the others have posted and what my doctor said. My son is now 10 and still has nose bleeds (so bad it has come out of his eyes before). We have a whole house humidifier we crank up and we also put a smaller one in his room. We put Vaseline on a Q-tip and swirl it around in his nose before he goes to bed. This really does help. After 5 years, I think we have finally found the right combination to help with his nose bleeds. The good thing is, now he is old enough to take care of it himself and we don't freak out every time it happens. If these things don't work for you, I would take him to see his doctor. When my son was smaller, his doctor put him on a seasonal nose spray.

Since everyone else responded about the dry air, which is the first thing I thought of too, I thought I would throw in another possibility - Vitamin C deficiency.

"The walls of the blood capillaries can become fragile and hence prone to injury and breakage, they can easily rupture therefore there is a possibility of spontaneous and sudden nosebleeds which can keep recurring in the person. This fragility in the capillary wall may be due to the deficiency of the vitamin C within the body."

Also, food allergies:

"Sensitivity to a certain type of food in the person can in turn cause nosebleeds."

Good luck.

My daughter ran into the same problem. The air in the house is too dry. You can try getting a humidifier and also saline nose pray solution works. With the drier air in the fall and winter, the nasel passages dry out and cause nose bleeds.

Hi P.
The only thing I can think of (outside the diagnosis from a doctor) is with the cold weather and turning on the heat in the home, this makes the air dry and makes the mucous membranes susceptible to nose bleeds. If it seems like the bleeds are a moderate amount, you may want to get it checked out. Putting moisture in the air may help. If you have a central home humidifier, this may help. If not, you can purchase a room humidifier from CVS or Target or any place like this. This will also help with congestion as the cold and flu season approaches. Good luck.

Sounds very similar to my nose bleeds when I was a child. The doctor told me some people just have thin walls inside their nose so the blood vessels are closer to the outside. Dry air can be reason it happened out of no where! Have you turned your heat on recently? Your childs nose will always seem more sensitive then others if he does have thin walls. I once had a 3 hour nose bleed in 5th grade just from being hit by a nerf ball. You may have the doctor check in the nose on your next visit. If you have trouble stopping the bleeding I have a strange solution that really works! Roll a piece of paper up to the length of your childs mouth (2inches) and maybe half inch thick and stuff it up inside the childs top lip between gums and lip just under nose. This is a pressure point and always works for me! The nose bleeds have slowed now that I'm an adult but the still occur sometimes and you just have to be prepared with tissues everywhere!

My daughter had this problem and we solved it with vaseline per the pediatican office. We rub vaseline on the inside of her nose at the botton of both nostrils. The moisture keeps the nose from becoming dry. My daughter had massive nosebleeds before we started this, even in the summer.

How bad are the nose bleeds? I would certianly take him to see the pediatrician. It may not be anything but it could be a sign of a low platelet count which is important in clotting.

My son typically starts the nose bleeds when the heat comes on for the winter. I'm assuming it's the lack of humidity. We have a whole house humidifier that seems to do the job - kicks it up to 45 or 50% pretty easily from 15 or 20%. If his nosebleeds occurs mainly during nightime hours you may want to consider this as a cause since the hvac works harder at night....

Good luck!

My son also has frequent nose bleeds. What the doctor told us (in English not medical jargon) is that he has some thin places inside his nose that get dry during high allergy/sinus times and season changes. The best thing to do is keep it moist. Take neosporin and put it on a qtip and just gently rub it inside his nostrils 2-3 times a day. This will keep them moist and should prevent the nosebleeds. If they don't stop after trying that see a doctor.

My name is L.... I just turned 50 this Sept... But to the Subject at hand: NOSE BLEED; My daughter did the same thing when she was age 4 until about 9 yrs old... I was told that this can be "hormonal" changes and in fact were (blood tests proved it... her md ran blood work and ultra sounds and her ovaries were the size of a 14 year old) md felt this was due to current hormones in milk, eggs and beef etc...

Another cause can simply be a weather change (dry air in home when the heat is turned on in fall or winter)...

She suffered no long term effects and she has had two successful pregnancies... Her md watched my daughters and suggested we go organic ** both daughters developed very early age 4 & 5 is early to be expecting a monthly period... but they didnt acutally start that until the usual age of 12 to 14 yrs old...

You most likely have nothing to worry about.. but if it continues or gets worse I would get this child to a pediatrician...

God Bless You and Your Family,
L.

It could be that the air in your home is to dry. If you put a large pot of water on to boil then turn to a low simmer it will add moisture into the air. Let this stay on low for a while 2-3 hours. If that does not help then ask your doctor. Children can suffer from high blood pressure as well as adults.
