Nose Bleeds While Pregnant

Hi Moms. A friend of mine is 10wks pregnant and is having horrible nose bleeds. Her OB said that because she used to get them a while back, the pregnancy is causing them to come back now. Have any of you had a problem like this before? She said they are pretty bad, not just dripping, but almost pouring out. She is going to see an ear, nose and throat dr, but thought I would ask if anyone has any experience with this. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I always get them in my first trimester (I think the What to Expect Book even talks about them). It's the perfect accompaniment to nausea and vomiting...ah pregnancy.

Hi Erin,

Nosebleeds are common, because you have a higher blood volume. If you become dizzy or you cannot stop the bleeding in 5 minutes or so, call the doctor.

Best of Luck

Nose bleeds while pregnant is quite common. You actually have more blood volume running through your body. I had them a lot....pouring like a faucet. So, I wouldn't worry too much unless your friend gets any bad symptoms such as edema, major headaches, etc. Best wishes to your friend!

I use to get BAD nosebleeds all the time. While pregnant, especially if the weather is a little dryer it is worse. While pregnant our blood vessels expand becoming closer to the surface of the skin. It makes it easier for nosebleeds to happen. She can try coating the inside of her nose with a thin layer of vaseline, she can apply it with a q-tip. It feels a little funny in the beginning, but it's better than lots of nosebleeds.

I was a chronic nose bleeder as a child (according to the doctor my nasal capillaries are close to the surface) and my nose bled during both my pregnancies. I would agree with the suggestions below of a humidifier, saline nose drops or Vaseline. All should help maintain moisture and keep the nose from drying out and bleeding. Good luck to your friend and wishing her a healthy pregnancy.

Hi Erin,

Haven't read your other answers yet, but I've found that when the humidity is low (the air is dry) my nasal passages get dry and brittle.
So to keep from getting nosebleeds, I put some vaseline petroleum
jelly around the inside of my nostrils. It makes a protective barrier to
keep the skin from breaking and the nose from bleeding.

I hope this helps.

With all 3 of my pregnancies I got nosebleeds, especially in the first half. It has something to do with your body making so much more blood. I can totally see that if she had nosebleed issues in the past that pregnancy would make them reappear. Mine didn't 'pour', but I got them quite frequently.

I heard from other about nosebleeds during pregnancy, especially the first trimester. A friend of mine just told me that she was experiencing them in the first trimester but they stopped now that she is in the 2nd trimester. Good luck!
