My 22-month old woke up with a nosebleed. Both nostrils were caked with blood. It did not seem to be a lot of blood on his sheets, but there seemed to be a lot in his nose. What could be the cause(s)?

What can I do next?

My son has gotten nose bleeds from time to time since he was 2 or so. Use a humidfyer in the room and light bit of vaseline in his nostril nightly. My son's doctor recommended this and it helps tremendously. If it is more than once in a while then I would see the doctor. I'm guessing though it is the dry air. My son had one this last week for the first time in a long time.

S.,

I have had this happen with my daughter and we figured out that she was laying in her bed at night and picking her nose until it bleed and would just go to sleep and the blood would dry in her nose. This could be the cause of it or you might get a humidifier to put in his room. Good luck.

My daughter gets this a lot. I've read that some people have thinner sinus/nasal walls than others, and are more prone to nosebleeds, especially when the air is dry or it's allergy season.

I use saline nasal spray for my daughter, and keep a humidifier running in her room during the night while she's sleeping, and even throughout the day when the air is particularly dry.

I haven't really had to put anything into/onto her nose aside from the saline spray, but I would use lanolin rather than Vaseline if you feel that you need to do this. Petroleum-based products such as Vaseline or lotions/creams that contain petrolatum may irritate baby's skin, and may even be carcinogenic. I've also heard that coating the inside of the nose or the nasal passages with Vaseline or things like Vicks or Mentholatum can lead to lung problems, as the product breaks down and is breathed into the lungs. Lanolin is used for breastfeeding moms, so it is safe for babies to ingest.

Good luck.

My son did that too, as he got older he grow out of it. Don't worry it could be dry air. If he does it while awake, just have him pinch his nose for a few minutes and breath through him month, it should stop soon.

I dealt with that as a child and it was allergy-related as well. Our doctor advised us to put a small amount of vaseline of vaseline or baby oil on the inside of my nose to keep it moist. I also used a humidifier a lot. I would also recommend finding a good ear-nose-throat doc. Hope that helps! Good luck!

1,) allergies-try an antihistamine or the opppsite problem- 2.) excessively dry air-use steamer, 3.) Did the child hit his nose on any part of the crib?-try padding. If any of these simple problems with simple cures won't handle it SEE A DOCTOR. Crazy things can happen-especially to kids.

It is probably from allergies. It seems I am getting that more and more. I teach at a daycare and we have a child in our 1 yr old class that goes through that from time to time. You might consult with your childs dr. to see if there is anything you can get for this!

Probably just the dry air? My husband and my two year old get nose bleeds like this. Put a little vaseline on the inside of the nostrils before bed and this should help keep them moisturized throughout the night.

I got these and so did my son when the air was really dry or when allergies were bad.

My 10 year old has suffered from occasional nosebleeds for many years now. With her it usually has to do with the air quality. Moisture is key, so if you've been running the A/C (or, in the winter, the heat) a lot, it is drying out the air. Vaseline is a good idea, as is a cool mist humidifier. If he has a nosebleed in your presence, do not tilt his head back. Instead, tilt his head slightly forward and put pressure on the nose until it stops. I know that's not easy to do with a 22 month old, but it does help.
