Does Anyone Know What a Developmental Fissure Is?

Daughter hurt her foot, it didn't heal readily so we took her in to get xrays. The doc said she has a "developmental fissure" in her toe and to baby it for a week. If it isn;t improving by Friday we'll send her to an orthopod.

So, I am googling and not seeing what this is really. Anyone know?

I know, I know I didn't get enough info. It seemed straightforward at the time it was only later that I was wondering exactly what the difference was. If I can't find out I'll call back.

What can I do next?

I think I would've asked the doctor, when he told me, to please explain what it was.

However, a fissure is a crack. Is it a crack in her bone? A split in a tendon or muscle? Don't know...and we can't answer that. The doctor who looked at her x-ray is the only one who can explain what he meant.

see the link below - If I am understanding what the situation is that the doctor was consulted on, basically it is a significant crack in the thickened skin of the foot, can potentially get infected.

hope that helps! T.

If you dont' fully understand something when you are at the doctors office, you need to ask questions until you do. I would assume it was not fractured, but you need to watch it and be careful.

Probably a crack at a spot that will naturally grow together in time (with childhood development).

You know that not all the bones are completely formed in a baby - like the skull which is in peices in a newborn, but eventually fuse together into one singular skull over a few years.

Good lesson going forward to always ask the doc when there's something you don't understand.
In the mean time call the doc's office or nurse line and ask!

I googled developmental fissure in bone and was sent to this site. http://www.wordnik.com/words/bone%20fissure

Definitions
Wiktionary
n. a groove or depression in a bone; a sulcus.

Put that together with developmental and I suggest it means a groove or depression in a bone made during the bone's development.

Other sites when I googled fissure talked about dental fissures meaning a groove in the enamel of a tooth.

I would call to be sure what the doctor was talking about.
