DNC For Heavy Bleeding

Can anyone tell me if this helps? I need a ray of hope. We have been trying to get pregnant for three years. Our first one happened so quickly. The second go around hasn't gone so well. I have been on my period since March 16th. My dr. put me on birth control and the bleeding slowed down, but I still need wear a pad. She did a biopsy today and suggested we go ahead and do a DNC. I'm 39 so I guess this could be a sign of menopause? I am hoping this could somehow be stress related. In the last six months my husband was laid off, he still hasn't been able to find something, the severance was out last month, and he isn't very receptive about unemployment(luckily, I'm teaching). Also, my dad hasn't been doing very well and his brother had a bad accident trying to intervene, and we have both lost our Grandmother's within a month. Can anyone share their stories about DNC so I have an idea of what to expect?

What can I do next?

I had one many years ago. They put me out for it. I woke up feeling like I had bad menstrual cramps. Pain meds took care of it.
If I had know what I know about nutrition then, I would have tried that first. Poor nutrition and stress were causing me to have one period after another.

It is D & C means dilation and curettage procedure or scraping of the uterus.

JP-- I'm sorry no one has answered this question yet. I think that it's a very hard memory for women who have gone through this.

What I can tell you is that my sister and a dear friend have both had D-n-C procedures and they both had very caring, good experiences with empathetic practitioners. I couldn't tell you how long they experienced bleeding afterward, sorry.

Best wishes to you. Take good care of yourself and be sure to ask about pain relief meds too.

Have you had an ultrasound? (Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it.) I bled for 9.5 weeks at the time I was 38, had an ultrasound which showed a fibroid tumor and cysts on both ovaries. The hormones they gave me slowed the bleeding down, but it didn't stop. I was hemorrhaging when I called my doctor and she said she'd meet me at the ER. Once there she determined i need a D&C, I had it, and when I was back in my room (they hospitalized me) she told me what she had seen indicated I needed an emergency hysterectomy. I had it the next day and went into instant menopause, they couldn't salvage either of my ovaries.

My advice is to talk to your doctor, ask for an ultrasound, have the D&C as it sounds as if it's needed, but don't assume it will just end the bleeding, there may be something physically going on that is causing the bleeding and needs to be taken care of.

God bless.

I'm sorry you are going through all of these stressful situations.

I was a bit older than you when I had a uterine ablation due to extreme periods and fibroids. For me, this was an amazing solution. My blood work was fine prior to surgery. Well, I guess this wouldn't be an option for you if you are trying to get pregnant (I realize that as I'm typing). Hopefully you will get some positive feedback

I haven't had a DNC for bleeding, but I did have a problem with bleeding. They did an ultrasound and would have done exploratory surgery if I hadn't had other medical issues to complicate things.

Anyhow - surprise. I was treated for low thyroid and the bleeding stopped. since I have taken thyroid medicine there as been no hemmoraging. If this hasn't been checked, you may want to do so - couldn't hurt.

I had a D & C but not for the same thing you are talking about. I had it without being put out as I didn't want that done so I was awake although had a shot to make me a bit less aware although awake. It was not bad at all and took care of my situation fine, not long recovery or anything. I think the procedure itself is not bad but not sure if it will help you although I know they recommend that for prolonged bleeding. I don't know why you think this is menopause related though.

I had a D&C because of a missed miscarriage, not because of heavy bleeding. But the procedure wasn't too bad and the recovery was fast. I was fully awake during the procedure and felt some discomfort, but again, not terrible. I was given something for the pain during, that make me vomit after, but still over quickly. I was back at work the next day. I was pregnant again 3 months later. I do know women who have had a D&C because of heavy bleeding and it did work for them.

It is possible to be experiencing pre-menopausal symptoms at 39, but the average age of menopause is actually 51, so I wouldn't assume that this is the reason you are having the bleeding.

Part of my infertility work up was a hysteroscopy d&c. The bleeding folliwing wad lighter and we used clomid to conceive. I was put out and woke to light cramping and spotting. It lasted about 48 hours. Get infertility involved with this so you get whatever you need done while being under one time.
