"Desperate Housewife" Seeking Others...

This is so embarassing, but I have finally decided to go public and admit it - I have virtually no friends. I go to the park with my 2 kids and I feel like I resemble a puppy at the pound, longingly looking after the happy mommy-friends I see strolling about together. My husband frequently travels, everyone that I can count as a friend seems waaaaay busier than I am and don't have any kind of time for handing out... and I have a lot going on too, but have all kinds of great stuff to offer any would be buddies. So my question is, where do you meet your friends (for the first time) and how did that happen? I can't really afford to do classes with the kids right now, but there are so many great things to do in the city - I just would love to do them with another mom and her youngster(s).

What can I do next?

Hello A.-
Are you still looking for playdates and such, because we are too. We live in Norwood Park in Chicago. I have a 3 year old daughter and an 8 month old son. Let me know, we would love to meet.

I have met many moms, actually all of my mom friends, through meetup.com. They have two sites for moms in the city....Chicago Moms in the City and The Chicago Stay at Home Moms. These are both free sites (or have minimal due fees) and host and promote activities in the city. They also have ways to set up and host playgroups. You can also look at NPN or Northside Parents Network. This has a fee but they set up playgroups by age and area code. Both sites have great messaging systems to chat with other moms. If you need specific sites etc let me know.

Don't be embarrassed.....we don't know who you are ;)

I've joined a couple of moms groups from meetup.com. I'm in Oak Park I don't know where you are but one of my groups is for toddlers and preschoolers. IF you are anywhere near Oak Park, I'm always looking for new mom friends and playmates for my 17 month old.

Often at parks, the kids are with a Nanny too!! Moms also already have a network of friends. We belong to meetup.com groups, however J is 2 1/2, and most Moms seem to have babies to 18mths tops. There are a few Moms with toddlers. I'm thinking of either using CMC or setting up a meetup group for preschoolers 18mths to 5years. We travel quite often so we're not always in Chicago. We live Downtown and have been in Chicago for 16mths. If anyone is close by, drop me a message through mamasource. We are going away Tues 21st for 2 weeks and then again Sept 12 for 6weeks...so it's not the best time to get together though. Make contact, and maybe when we are back in town we can do some things together. We'd be happy to get together.

I feel the exact same way! We moved here last year and while we have a bunch of friends in the city, none of them have kids yet. I joined the meetup.com groups but most of the members had small babies and I was mostly looking for playgroups for our almost 3 year old not our 8 month old. And most of the play groups were in the Lincoln Park/Lakeview area. We live in the Loop and I was looking for playgroups that we could walk to. I can't wait until our oldest daughter goes to preschool next year so I can finally meet some moms!
