Looking for a New Way to Make Friends with Other Moms

I am a stay at home mom who has no time nor a babysitter to go out at night and do not have the money to take my kids where I can meet other moms. A lot of my friends have no kids or live to far away, so I have no one to relate with about my kids. What is a good way to meet moms and make new friends?

I have joined a mom's group through Meetup.com in the Yorkville area. Everything they do is virtually free, meeting at parks, or other mom's houses. I haven't attended an event yet, but there are three planned this coming week at local parks.

If you ever want to get together or just to hang that would be nice too. I am newly a SAHM, just two weeks, so I am also eager to meet others to share motherhood with. My son is 15mos. old and so full of energy it would be nice to have someone to play with and tire him out.

Hi K.,
The first question is where do you live? I live in Kenosha, WI, have an almost 4 year old little girl, busy schedule, but would love to make a new friend. Let me know where you live and maybe we can get together.

I read your posting and it sounds just like my life, minus the home business. All my friends live too far away (mostly out of state) and none of them have children. We moved to a new subdivision two years ago and there are not many young children. My daughter is 2 1/2 yrs old and would love to have playmates. She is signed up for programs through our local park district but they are only two days a week. If you live anywhere near Yorkville let me know and maybe we could arrange a playdate.

Meetup.com is a great way. Libraries usually have some great programs that are free. Or even for the kids to just look at different books. :) Mall around the play area. Parks. If you belong to a church, maybe they have a program?

How about just going to the mall with the kids, or the park now that it is getting nice out.

There are many moms here who have started playgroups. Also try Meetup.com, they have many groups you can join. I am sure there are moms groups in your area as well.

MeetUp.com is always a great way :)

Not sure of what area you're in, but I do know of a few playgroups in the area if you're interested, just let me know and I can give you their information.

Are you in or near Elgin? I have a daughter who is almost 7 and would love playmates (and I wouldn't mind having a friend myself)! We live on a lake too so we have a nice place to play in the backyard and explore nature.

Feel free to send me a message if you're close. Like Donna, I also moved here from NC over a year ago and have yet to make any "real life" friends. Once you run all the errands, etc. it's hard to find time to organize things. I'm on meetup.com but the kids are either babies or the events don't work for our schedule :(
And enrolling her in park district classes just means the parents usually drop off the kids or the ones who do sit there usually are occupied with laptops, cellphones, etc. and there's no opportunity for conversation!

I agree with other posters that mentioned meet-up. I've been a member of meet-up since last yr. I've met so many wonderful moms & made some great friends! We usually have playdates at the park, or at each others homes, ect...

go to meetup.com & find a group in your area.

I have met a lot of moms through the Chicago Park District programs for kids. The cost is only $5-$10 for a 10 to 12 week session. My kids are 2 and 4, but they have programs for kids 6 mos to teens. Good luck and I hope this helps.

my children are older but my sister has 4 children and they are in alot of activities where she lives. There are alot of mommy and daddy that they meet and hook up with. The library by her has a day where lots of the moms go and be with their children and they meet and chat with each other. park Districts, church.

You might want to try your local library. They have lots of activities for young children, and it is a great way to meet other paretns.

I've only met other moms through my daughter's activities. Someone else suggested the local library and that reminded me that Borders does free storytimes weekly where you could probably meet people, too. Check their website for the day/time of the location most convenient for you.

Also, if you have a local YMCA look into their programs. Their classes are not that expensive, but I know ours, adn a lot of others, has weekly indoor playtime for $4 for non-members for 2 hrs. THere are some free activities monthly and also they do special parties and whatnot for the whole family at night every month or 2.

Hi my name is Liz I live in Burbank, IL. where do you live? I have 2 boys 3 and 1 yrs old. I'm looking to meet other mommies too. I found this web site it's great. It's called www.cafemom.com. You can join for free and meet other mommies. Most just go to the park or meet up to talk. Everyone has kids it's a lot of fun. I have met a few nice mommies on there. Well if you live in my area I'd love to meet and our kids can play and we can hang out and talk about anything.
little about me, I'm 25 moved here from NC with hubby and our boys and our German Shepard Zues. We were both in the Marine Corps and loved it. I like to cook, watch House, Greys Anatomy, baby and cooking shows. I like to shop, work out, go to the park with the kids, and i'm currently going to school online for Medical Coding. If you want to email me back feel free to it's always nice to meet a new mommy in the area. Hope to hear from you soon.

Have you checked out northside parents network? http://www.npnparents.org/ I think it is like $40 a year and they have social events setup by zip code for kids. A lot of the events are during the day. You can also setup playgroups or join playgroups. What is great is they hvae a lot of different mom and dad support/social groups setup that you can join. They have discussion boards to which are great, especially if you are looking for things to do aroudn chicago. We have lived in Chicago for just over a year but this is how I have met most of the people I know in Chicago.
Good luck!
