"Cheap" Yarn

Check out thrift stores. People often donate full skeins of yarn, they are packaged hopefull with all the like colors together.

Do you have a Hobby Lobby near you. They have their own line of yarn and the basic no frills yarn is around $2 a skein. It's called " I love this yarn" Also the Red Heart brand that most stores carries tends to be the least expensive out there. Sign up for the coupons from Jo-Anns. I get tons of 40 to 50% off coupons that are ususally good for one item. Also Jo-Anns accepts the coupons from Hobby Lobby. I can go in pull up the HL coupon on my smart phone and show it at check out and get my 40% off one item there. I sew more than crochet now and use it all the time on thread and single cuts of fabric.

I get lucky some times and find it at goodwill.

Also I "recycle" sweaters by taking them apart.

I also buy from other knitters on ravelry.com pretty often. You have to go to the "for trade or sale" tab and look, then offer however much plus shipping most the time, but still come out ahead.

Depending on what you're going to be using the yarn for... if you're looking for just cheap yarn, red-heart is cheap and you can find it at walmart. It's acrylic so you can machine wash it. It's pretty good stuff, and she ships pretty quickly. I'm a big knitter - so quality yarn matters to me.
